Lyr Req: Glenamaddy

Subject: Lyr Add: GLENAMADDY (John Duggan)
From: GUEST,Donal

Can anyone please supply the rest of the lyrics of this song. I got the MP3 from the radio but unfortunately my hearing is not too good and even with a fairly good map I can't fill in the rest of the names or even be sure of those that I have.
Thanks in advance.
Donal.

I'LL GO BACK TO GLENAMADDY. (Richie O'Shea: The Man From the Glen)

Bells were pealing over Boston, midnight hour rang loud and clear,
As I walked along the pavement, thinking of old Ireland dear.
When I heard a young man crying, and his cries were loud and clear,
God be with my friends in Galway, God be with my mother dear.

I'll go back to Glenamaddy, to the place where I was born,
Just to meet my friends and neighbours, after Mass on Sunday morn.
Back to see Kilcoggy's waters, Gortnageer and Shanamore,
How I'd love to be in Esker, just to cross the bog once more.

I'll go back to Glenamaddy, where I first set out to roam,
There I'll settle down for ever, and no more I'll yearn for home.
Back to see my friends in Bearna, Ballyhass and ??
Garmintubber and Cloonminda, it's the sweetest place I know.

Boston town can be so lonely, ?? friends so dear,
But at home in Glenamaddy there is plenty of good cheer.
Songs and dances in Cloonlarra, in ?? and ??
So I'll say goodbye to Boston, and go home and join the fun.

I'll go back to Glenamaddy, to the place where I was born,
Just to meet my friends and neighbours, after mass on Sunday morn.
Back to see Kilcoggy's waters, Gortnageer and Shanamore,
How I'd love to be in Esker, and in Glenamaddy once more.

Thanks Joe, I trawled the net pretty thoroughly before making the request, I know it's a fairly modern song but I'm
hoping that someone either has the CD with liner notes or has a better ear than me for the placenames.

Here's what I think I hear. I have spent some time looking up place names, and I can at least testify that all the following (except London) are real places near Glenamaddy, even if they don't quite match the singer's pronunciation! Most of them are too small even to have a Wikipedia article about them, but I have linked the ones that do.

I'LL GO BACK TO GLENAMADDY
As sung by Hugo Duncan on "Country & Irish" (2010)

1. Bells were pealin' over London; midnight hour rang loud and clear,
As I walked along the pavements, thinkin' of old Ireland dear,
When I heard a young man cryin', and his cries were loud and clear:
"God be with my friends in Galway; God be with my mother dear.

2. "I'll go back to Glenamaddy, to the place where I was born,
Just to meet my friends and neighbours, after Mass on Sunday morn,
Back to see Kiltullagh's waters, Gortnagier and Shannagh More.
How I'd love to be in Esker, just to cross the bogs once more!

3. "I'll go back to Glenamaddy, where I first set out to roam.
There I'll settle down for ever, and no more I'll yearn for home;
Back to see my friends in Barna, Ballyhard and Glassillaun,
Carrintubber and Cloonminda; it's the sweetest place I know.

4. "London town can be so lonely, parted from your friends so dear,
But at home in Glenamaddy there is plenty of good cheer—
Songs and dances in Cloonlara, in Ardeevin and Clooncon,
So I'll say goodbye to London, and go home and join the fun.

5. "I'll go back to Glenamaddy, to the place where I was born,
Just to meet my friends and neighbours, after mass on Sunday morn;
Back to see Kiltullagh's waters, Gortnagier and Shannagh More.
How I'd love to be in Esker, and in Glenamaddy once more!"

[Most of the places mentioned can be found on this map or on this list.]

Once a month, from September to March, I visit "Kiltullagh's waters" i.e. a small lake just south of Glenamaddy, to count wintering birds. I then check out "Glenamaddy Turlough" - another small winter lake just North of the village. In between the two, in the village itself, there's a pub.... but that's another story!

Regards

Thanks for that, Jim, I had given up on getting those names. At the time I first posted I had looked up Google Maps but couldn't find much at all. I have to accept that you are correct with the placenames, perhaps it's Richie O'Shea's pronounciation, but I still think he sings Kilcoggy rather than Kiltullagh.
