We're sneaking them in where you don't immediately notice them so we can get you used to the sound. Then, one day, you'll suddenly notice that everywhere you turn, there is an accordion making beautiful music. And we (accordion players) have been insidiously exposing the younger generation to the wonders of the piano accordion every chance we get. Don't be surprised if sometime soon, your shining faced young daugter or son comes to you and innocently asks if you would please buy her or him a piano accordion. The day is not too far off! And the people who play piano accordions are perfect people. And they all have really cute toes even though they often hide them by wearing socks with sandals. Well, I guess that makes them less than perfect since only doofuses wear socks with sandals. Okay, so accordion players are all doofuses and that makes accordions doofus instruments. Okay, let's try this again.... Some good things about piano accordions: 1) You cannot install "D" tuners on them 2) They don't have spit valves (though they should have drool cups) 3) Accordions do impart a certain beatific visage upon their players' faces (though similar facial expressions can be attained by using Thorazine, prefrontal lobotomies, or ball-peen hammers) 4) If a man plays the accordion in the nude he will probably pinch his equipment off which will prevent passing the accordion-playing gene to future generations |

I mean French people can play accordions and make them sound sophisticated and full of je ne sais quoi - Charles Trenet and all that. Every time some git gets up and says I'm going to play three slip jigs and a horn pipe and glowers at the audience in a challenging manner - you think oh my gawd here we go again. Think of the millions of people who go dancing every week in England. how many of them dance slip jigs and horn pipes? do you not think these paricular dances are somewhat over emphasised in the very worthy attempt to give us aliving folk culture. |

Hey Carol, you are right about the commercials, squeezers are emerging as the sound which sells. I reckon the same percentage is true of recorded music (that includes melody!). I just a few minutes ago heard k d lang's 'Constant Craving' on my builder's wireless, and she always uses shedloads of accordion in her recorded work. A sparing accordion lick still sends me to a happy place, and makes me glad I started to learn the possibilities of this wonderful instrument. However, there are many shockingly bad players of every instrument, and the poor old accordion (in the hands of trainees) plays over most everything else, and therefore is the most audible baddest instrument. The problem is probably more due to the lawless nature of the session, and the self-delusion of some players that they are adding to the music, when the opposite is so lamentably the case. All that said, I don't get upset by the detractors, and occasionally enjoy compliments that I play the accordion 'nicely'! |

In defence of the accordion I see it as one of the very few portable instruments that can be played without the backup of other instruments or voices. About 50 years ago my father often tuned into Austrian radio stations which played Tyrolian music. I have never been able to trace those stations on the "modern" radio. |

Slavic music Mexican and Norteno music Some Irish Balkan Israeli Jazz (some really great players around) Great instrument to accompany folk dancers Swedish hambos etc. Norwegian Some Middle Eastern Music Polish Czech Yiddish and Hebrew In the hands of a great musician, it becomes a great instrument. Too much is made of the instrument itself and not enough about the musician who plays it well. The button accordian (Bayan etc.) is also a wonderful versatile instrument. Frank |
