Lyr Req: Tying the Leaves to the Tree

Trying to find lyrics to a tearjerker song my grandmother used to sing. It concerned a girl suffering from a terminal illness who was not expected to survive the year. Her younger sister(?)was found tying the leaves to the tree in a vain to prevent the approach of autumn when death was expected.

The song is in an earlier thread, posted by Ralph Butts. The version is from Mac and Bob, probably mid to late 20s, though I didn't look it up. It came from an album on Birch, which is much sought after, but seldom encountered. My understanding is that only 500 were pressed, and I know where two of them are!

Later in the thread, Mark Clark mentions another, similar song by Sam and Kirk McGee. If that is the one you want, then somebody will have to start looking, because I could not find the words for that one.

Well, anyway, go here: I'm Tying The Leaves So They Won't Come Down

Dale, Thanks for the threads and lyrics. My uncle is 80 next month and has been trying for 30 years to trace this song his mother used to sing. My sister can actually remember the tune so this will be a pleasant surprise for her as well. Thanks again - Tony Doran, Liverpool, England

The song must be based on the O Henry short story "The Last Leaf," about a girl who was convinced she would die when the last leaf fell from a tree outside the window near her sick bed. When the leaf didn't drop (because it had been tied on), she passed the crisis of her illness and recovered. The story, along with several other O Henry tales, was made into a movie in the '40s or '50s, I think. Among the other stories in the film were "The Ransom of Red Chief" and "The Gift of the Magi." --seed
