Spaw, I think people just really want to chat. It would help if they had something to say, but that doesn't seem to matter much to most people.

Where's that Nascar message board. It's pretty bad when I'm of the opinion that the Nascar (or is it NASCAR?) folks are probably having more intelligent conversations than what's found here these days. Is that where Peter T's hanging out, with or without the heron?

You're onto something, Spaw. Whatever it is, I feel sorry for it, trapped under that fat posterior. :-)

Well yes, but only to a point. I think that "Sorttar ahfet zim mushnet?" is maybe a bit strong.

There's only one answer to that - WWF...

Y'all hush. NASCAR is slowly being taken over by intelligent educated people who actually understand the strategy and technology that drives the sport.

People say that the fans watch for the crases. Well maybe some do, but it's the same with the Tour de France, yet the fans are looked at as "better" than NASCAR fans.

difference is that in the Tour de France, the spectators get to help CAUSE crashes...

..hey...wait...maybe if they removed the fences at NASCAR and let the more 'enthusiastic' ones cheer from close up....naawwww, them cars are more expensive than even those high-priced bikes...

I think NASCAR would be better in touch with the public if they made a few changes.

First off, put mufflers on the cars - Stay with me, you will see how this leads to better things.

Second, draw a white line down the centre of the road, and split the field into 2 heats, one going in each direction.

The over bridges for spectators moving from inside to outside the track should be closed, and pedestrian crossings - with push button stop light installed. The reduced noise of the cars will be a help here, as they won't be as easy to hear coming.

There are a few other things that can be done, but we'll get these introduced first.

Robin

Well how about that, Spaw. You started a race car thread without even ever mentioning race cars yourself. That takes talent.

...this one, imbued with all the intelligence....

Look, Spaw, your unique position as Revered Senior Mudcat Humourmeister allows you to get away with crap that many other 'Catters wouldn't think of doing: farting, saying "fuck" all the time, living in Ohio. But there are still a few things that simply shouldn't be done by anyone, Spaw included, and imbuing is definitely one of them. How dare you imbue this thread or any other thread? There may be dachshunds present. Maybe those Wienerwarmer dogs of yours have witnessed your imbuing often enough to be jaded about it, but think of poor little Schnapsie. He'll probably have to undergo hundreds of nine-minute* sessions with a canine psychologist to recover from the mental anquish your thoughtless imbuing has inflicted upon him.

I am hereby requesting that, for the sake of decency, someone in a position of authority strike the reference to imbuing from the opening post to this thread.

* Since a year in a dog's life is supposedly the equivalent of seven human years, an hour in a dog's life is rougly the equivalent of nine human minutes. Therefore, canine therapy sessions are only nine minutes long.

Foolestroupe,

You're coming close to describing local figure-8 racing. Ever seen it? Our local track, Orlando Speed World (everything in Orlando is "something world" - Disney World, Sea World, Citrus World, Seashell World, Bargain World, But I Digress World . . .)

Any way. A few times a year we have figure-8 school bus races and figure-8 trailer races. The trailer races are with cars puling trailers.   The have to cross traffic in the middle of the track Sicne it's often the camper trailers that get hit and not the cars, the cars end up dragging around trailers that have tipped over and are shedding bits of their sheet metal. It's wonderful fun. The school bus races are a big hit with the kids. Bill Geist on the CBS show Sunday Morning did an article on Orlando Speed World and the figure-8 racing.

Ya' know Bee-Dub, I got a special imbuing tool and a license to use it so keep your distance or there might be an unfortunate imbuing accident!

The reason I like Weims is that they are born with a neurosis already present....no need to give them any! Much like humans, they are fucked up at birth and rather than go with all the therapy and counselling, it's easier just to cater to the neurotic condition, this in the case of a Weimaraner being "Separation Anxiety." The wise Weim owner learns to take the dimbulbs everywhere they go as well as learning how to jump, hurdle, or gracefully fall over, Weimaraners which are lying everywhere you are doing something......like showering. I have to leap across two dogs to get out of the shower! BTW, you'll find that most of us own at least two as this does decrease the SA somewhat, but the penalty is that you must master the "Weimie Two Step" or fall and bust your ass.

Jeri, I think you have, as always, nailed it! Having something to say has become somewhat of a novel concept around here........BTW, on the chat thing, I might as well....I'd be here more but my Gateway has just about gone through it's last gate. Dodgy ethernet card and 6 years of usage with little maintenance........It's been great but I have to reboot 10 times a day and even then I might not have a working 'puter. I see a Dell in my future. First, I need to see some money in my future!

...let me be clear. We have real enemies in the world. These enemies must be found. They must be pursued and they must be defeated. John Kerry knows this. And just as Lieutenant Kerry did not hesitate to risk his life to protect the men who served with him in Vietnam, President Kerry will not hesitate one moment to use our military might to keep America safe and secure. John Kerry believes in America. And he knows it's not enough for just some of us to prosper. For alongside our famous individualism, there's another ingredient in the American saga.

A belief that we are connected as one people. If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief-I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters' keeper-that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. "E pluribus unum." Out of many, one.

Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America-there's the United States of America.

There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States.

There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope. John Edwards calls on us to hope. I'm not talking about blind optimism here-the almost willful ignorance that thinks unemployment will go away if we just don't talk about it, or the health care crisis will solve itself if we just ignore it. No, I'm talking about something more substantial. It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker's son who dares to defy the odds; the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too. The audacity of hope!

In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation; the belief in things not seen; the belief that there are better days ahead. I believe we can give our middle class relief and provide working families with a road to opportunity. I believe we can provide jobs to the jobless, homes to the homeless, and reclaim young people in cities across America from violence and despair. I believe that as we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices, and meet the challenges that face us. America!

Tonight, if you feel the same energy I do, the same urgency I do, the same passion I do, the same hopefulness I do-if we do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, from Florida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up in November, and John Kerry will be sworn in as president, and John Edwards will be sworn in as vice president, and this country will reclaim its promise, and out of this long political darkness a brighter day will come. Thank you and God bless you.

Well, I hope one day Obama (who uttered the words Donuel posted) runs for president.

Spaw, my almost-8-year-old Gateway is working OK, but it sometimes reminds me of the '64 Chevy station wagon that was my first car - in '75. You have to pump the gas pedal to get it started and stick a quart of oil in every 20 miles or so.

Art's condom thread seems like a masterpiece of wit now. It must be because it's election year. Maybe the intelligence level in the US always drops drastically during the campaign. I hope it rises just a tad before the actual election.
