BS: Why Are Republicans...

so dad-blamed obsessed with genitals that don't belong to them? I have thunk this all the way around the block a dozen times, and I cannot come up with a single reason why an act of gay sex or birth control threatens my well-being in any way, shape, or form. What DOES threaten me, as well as everyone else is that someone should be invading our lives to make choices for us.

It's control, plain and simple. They want to keep people under control so they are against anything that gives people choices. Hence, Republicans (especially those wh support the current regime) are fascists and anti-freedom.

well, that is a good question, SaulGoldie. I am a Republican, but the whole gay stuff as well as the Pro-life stuff seem like issues that are personal business and do not belong in the political arena. Somehow the Republican party has decided to pander to the ultra-conservative religious right, moral majority, etc whatever you want to call them and the pure fact is that money talks. Votes talk. It is a damn shame that it is this way but it is.

Having said this, I feel that the Democrat party does just the same stuff, but caters to a set of different values. But make no mistake, the same rhetoric is involved, idle hollow promises. I am a fiscal conservative with very moderate or liberal social leanings. I meet many many people who feel similar to me, and I have always thought there is a place for a middle party or at least candidates who seem to be more moderate. The trend right now, to me at least, is candidates who are far to the left or right being more popular. I would have liked to have seen a moderate democrat candidate who I would have supported, but to me, John Kerry is the exact opposite extreme, and it is pretty academic which is preferable, A fascist or a communist.

jimmyt, I am sympathetic to the idea of being fiscally conservative and socially liberal, but I don't see how the current bosses of the GOP can claim to be fiscally conservative. They are basically promoting welfare for the multinational corporate elite at the expense of everyone else.

How you they (or you) justify the huge deficit they've run up, after boogeyman Clinton left an equally-large surplus less than four years ago?

If the Republicans weren't able to base their campaigns on an appeal to fundamentalist fear and superstition, they'd be in big trouble. As it is, they have millions of very nice God-fearing people regularly voting for them and against their own economic self-interest.

There is a large number people in this country who stay awake nights and pace back and forth, smacking a clenched fist into the palm of their other hand and grinding their teeth, suspecting that somewhere out there in the wide world someone might be enjoying life. This drives them crazy and they want it stopped!

Not all Republicans are this way, but these people have taken over the Republican Party within recent years.

Does anyone remember the name of the group of 'concerned citizens' who wanted to get a law passes making it necessary for dogs to have their hind ends covered? It was some sort of 'decency' group didn't want old Rover's balls flapping in the open air where 'good' people might see them. I have often wondered why those 'good' people were checking out Rover's balls, but perhaps I should stay with one question at a time. Sorry for the thread drift.

Kerry a communist? He isn't even remotely Socialist! He is of the political right, as "opposed" to the incumbent republican out-of-sight extreme right. A victory for the Kerry team will be better---but not, by any stretch, good. Bush, to be sure, is a global catastrophe; Kerry says he wants to get the world on America's side. Does he mean the people? Or does he merely want National Governments to back whatever policy his [hoped-for] regime will come up with? To the watching world, he is the lesser of two evils; but his enthusiastic military drum-beating tells all that he isn't the lesser by much.

John Wayne was as big a phony as George Bush. He never served in the military, and he never spoke a word that wasn't scripted for him.

Definition of a republican:
One who lives in mortal fear that somehow, somewhere someone is enjoying himself.

I am also a fiscal conservative, and I don't understand how conservatives can abide a 7 trillion dollar national debt. We are bleeding red ink to the point where even the liberals are worried!

I asked a friend who is a raving republican why they are so hung up on how other people show their love for another, and he gave me the old "Camel's nose under the tent" argument. Gay marriage will lead to beastiality, child abuse, nose picking...silly argument. Reminded me of Prof. Hill in the Music Man..and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool!
It really is a control thing, but let's not get it ass backwards, it is, control freaks become republicans, not the other way 'round.

I think that this thread makes some false assumptions about Republicans being a unified, like-thinking group.

Just as I am sure that there are Democrats who do not agrree with all of the points of the Democratic party, there are Republicans that do not agree with all the issues that the current administration is pushing. Some of us do not agree with the attempt to pass laws against gay marriage, or that the Patriot act is a good thing.

HOWEVER, just as those whe support Kerry, because he is not Bush, we may support Bush, for what we consider good reasons. I would rather that the Republicans had a different candidate- as I am sure many of my liberal friends feel about Kerry. But we now have a binary choice- and each of us should make our vote based on what we believe will be best for this country.

The last polls I saw showed that 44% (+/- 3) of the voters preferred Bush over Kerry, and 48% (+/-3) preferred Kerry over Bush. This election will be decided by the middle 8%- Those who are not "right" or "left". All of us will have to live with the results. I may or may not like the results- but I intend to support the new administration regardless of who wins.

As I have stated before, I find almost no difference between the far Right and the far Left- BOTH seek to impose their will upon the rest of us, regardless of our desires.

Thank you Bearded Bruce, for putting my thoughts exactly in to words.

Kendall, you are making generalizations that you would not appreciate toward you if the shoe were on the other foot. I do not think of myself as a control freak. I do, however, know of lots of liberal philosophy that is control freak oriented, although I would not make the blanket statement that is how they all feel.

So, so far we have that they don't like it when others enjoy themselves, and they are into control. Is that all there is? Is there a cure? Can you imagine what genuine social good we could do if we weren't spending so much of our public resources worrying about genitals that are not our own?

my bad, I posted at work, and I was the guest above.

About a year ago there were several threads about such matters, bearded brucie, sort of tongue in cheek, but on that vein. WIlco58, a former poster who is a staunch conservative, tried to turn the tables and do similar "tongue in cheek" humor but directed at liberals, and he unleashed so much anomosity that he pretty much stopped coming by here at all.

My point is that yes, there are terrible things done by and evil people in the Republican party. They are in no way representing the vast majority of Americans. I feel that there equally as many in the Democratic party. If we didn't share power every few years as a check and balance, we would be so totally screwed up as a nation that we would never recover. And I feel that this is as true from one side of the aisle as the other.

Why are republicans so obsessed with generals.   Because generals are in charge of the war.   Oh you said genitals. Never mind.

Anytime you label all republicans or all democrats as something you are generally making an ass out of yourself.    The reason many republicans made a big deal about Bill Clinton's genitals is because it was true, and not a "right wing conspiracy" was Hillary told us.

PS- has anyone other than Bea Arthur wore more pant suits than Hillary Clinton?

(to the tune of Mary Ellen Carter)
she went down on Bill Clinton neath his oval office desk
All summer he'd been hoping to get in her blue dress
But the groans she made when she went down, caused us to proclain
THat the willie on slick willie rise again

etc. etc.

I used to read Playboy interviews (averting my eyes from the dirty pitchers.)

As I recall, John Wayne said in his interview he didn't go in the service in WWII because they wouldn't give him a commission, "and I took a dim view of that."

He also said we did right to take the country away from the Indians because they weren't using it properly.

Well, gol danged. The Repubs couldn't care less about genitals (generals? now that's a different story...), 'er not much of any of them "southern (white) men" values. They know that by holding their noses and waving those red flags infront of southern (white) men that they can count on a lot of electorial votes.

It's called the "Southern Stategy" and the Repubs stole it off the "Bryd Machine" Dems of old...

Yup, anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-flag burnin', anti-big governemnt, aiti-intellectual... They have played these tunes so long that you can hold the record up and see thru it...

Meanwhile, without Vasciline, Southern Man gets the usual screwing from the Boss Hog industrialists... and swear he loves it! Just don't mess wid his NASCAR, country music and keep plenty of cold Budweiser on hand and all is well...

But no one should think for one minute that these Repubs, any more than the Dixiecrats before them are doing anything less than playin' on thre ignorance, sexism, racism and anger of southern (white) man...

BTW< a lot of these southern (white) men also live in the midwest...

right now, the 'names' in the Republican party are people like Bush, Ashcroft, Tom DeLay, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Orrin Hatch...all of whom scare me witless as to their ultimate motives and goals. A few, like John McCain and poor ol' Colin Powell are stuck trying to figure out how to ride out this wave of extremism so they can be 'reasonable' conservatives again.

We see the Moslem world being subverted by dangerous men using a distorted sense of religion, morals and 'destiny' to wreak havoc on others...why can't most of us see a similar thing, aided & abetted by ultra conservative Republicans, happening here?

I was correctly called on the implied "all" in reference to Republicans. There are, of course, some republicans who are not obsessed with controlling genitals that are not their own. I know two, and there are undoubtedly a few more.

Well, dangitall, if it isn't the vast majority of 'em, then those who are not so afflicted should revolt within the party and give the rest of us evidence of their presence so we can adjust our stereotypes accordingly. Mark my words, though, the "obsessed" within the party are going to make genital control a major campaign issue. Why people are willing to turn over such control is beyond me. And I am still trying to figure out how I am harmed by non-coercive behavior between consenting adults.
