Lyr Req: Farmer in Florida

Subject: A Priscilla Herdman Song??
From:

I heard a song years ago that I thought to be done by P.H. It had to do with a retired north central farmer down in Florida. He was homesick for his farm and the line that got repeated that sticks in my mind is "plowing long straight rows." This isn't much to work with I know but help me out if you can.

A local folkie said it might be done by a Donohoe or something but I have had no luck finding anything.

Thanks.

Wrong Rogers. It's a Stan Rogers song Priscilla Herdman sang on "Seasons of Change." The song is "Field Behind the Plow," and it appears on Stan's "Northwest Passage" and on his wonderful, live "Home in Halifax" CD. -Joe-

Well take your pick. Stan Rogers didn't say anything about Florida and Sally Rogers didn't say anything about plowing long straight rows.

FARMER IN FLORIDA
From: Sally Rogers - "Love Will Guide Us"

Me and my good wife spent most of our lives
Together workin' God's earth so others could eat.
It's the way that I chose it and Harriet knows it
That she don't regret it, her life has been complete.
But now our kids have grown, left the country for another home
In the city where there's livin' they say to get things done.
So Harriet she dried her tears, says we've been here for thirty years,
Now it's our turn to get out and have us some fun.

CHORUS: But there ain't nothin' for a farmer in Florida
When his heart is still planting wheat fields back home, o Lord.

Loaded our pick-up truck, changed our address and packed up
Told our old friends good bye and we drove away.
Now we live in a tin can, I feel like another man
Goin' to movies on the weekend and playing cribbage all day.
But Harriet she's in her prime, doing something all the time
With the ladies on our street she sees every day.
Sometimes when I'm walking alone, see those big birds flying home
For the summer, I could just jump up and sail away.

CHORUS 2X

Kitty Donohoe also sang FARMER IN FLORIDA, and used that as the title of her first album in 1999. You can hear a clip at CDBaby but it doesn't say who wrote it. However, her website says the album "showcases her diverse songwriting."
