I suppose that makes ME ancient, but remember you're as old as you feel - personally, I'm looking for a toy boy to feel so I feel young! Can't promise we'll be at Miskin - I got to this year's, didn't get out of the camper, and ended up having to take five months off work! |

01 Feb 05 - 07:19 PM (#1396247) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Hello all, call to arms time. Despite all the secrecy it seems to have leaked out that Miskin is on again this year…We all know its getting bigger so we need more help. Ideally I would like a team to help set up on Thursday and Friday morning and then relax and enjoy but be ready to help again on the crucial Monday morning. I also need anyone with cooking expertise to do a shift in the kitchen. Bar staff will be a team unto themselves but please contact me if you have expertise in such matters. The dispensing of that is, not the consumption. Lastly of course we need those festival workhorses, the stewards. Door duty, car parking and general ticketing is not exactly arduous at Miskin but it has to be done. As for the rest of you just come along and do try to enjoy yourselves will you!! Oh by the way, after much deliberation I have decided we must follow public opinion and stop smoking in the lounge bar. This is where people are eating after all and it is the only complaint I have had in the last few years. I hope we wont have to limit numbers but to make sure just order your tickets now, there is an on line booking form on the website. www.miskinfolk.co.uk |

02 Feb 05 - 04:33 PM (#1397046) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats The biggest disappointment for this year is that I now can't come! Due to vaguaries of the railways who don't run the daily train to Brighton on Sunday night because it is Easter, I either spend all day travelling and spend an hour on two separate railway stations if I miss the 6 minute connection (some hope)or I don't come at all. So.. Jon will be there and I expect you all to phone me from the sessions so I can join in at home. I could always tell you a story or lead a song via the web though... Andy... isn't Toby a computer genius.... this could be a first.. a virtual me!!! |
02 Feb 05 - 04:39 PM (#1397058) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Morticia Oh No!!!! This is terrible news.....what about Daniel's Band? I was so looking forward to you guys terrifying my hangover into submission! |
02 Feb 05 - 09:59 PM (#1397366) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Limehouse Lizzy To Cats above. Sorry you can't get to Miskin Cats due to the vagaries of the railway timetable but I think you can get to Gosport / Fareham. That festival is held in Fareham now (nothing much takes place in Gosport) and my railway timetable indicates there are frequent direct trains between Brighton and Fareham even on Easter Sundays. It will take more than the rail companies to keep us mudcatters away from our music. There's always a festival somewhere within reach by rail! |
03 Feb 05 - 04:04 AM (#1397575) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Havnt quite cracked this signing on businass yet. This is actually Miskin man here::: Just to dispel any rumours that this secret festival is even secret from British Rail, we actually have a half decent service most days. Here's a quick version of the times over the Easter period On Friday Saturday and Monday there is an hourly service from Cardiff to Pontyclun, (10 mins walk at most) at approx 20 past every hour until 2031 then a last one at 2230 And from Pontyclun to Cardif 10 to the hour with the last one at 20:51 We just don't go anywhere 'cept chapel on Sundays it seems Just two from Cardiff 19:57 2214 And one back at 1956 Simple answer for everyone but Cats is to arrive on Friday and STAY. I know Cats is in an unavoidable situation and letter from Mum has been accepted. Cats has supported Miskin from the early days and will be sadly missed. Andy |
03 Feb 05 - 04:09 AM (#1397579) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats at Work Thanks for the suggestions. It's not a festival I need..it's Miskin! I was due to help out with singing and storytelling but have to be in Brighton for my Trade Union Conference on Sunday night. It's that I don't want to end up missing half of everything to get to brighton and I can't take all my posh conference stuff plus camping gera as Jon will have the camper in Wales while I'm in Cornwall! Just as a consolation prize though, it means I can go to the reopening of the Witchcraft Museum in Boscastle instead and support graham and co. |
03 Feb 05 - 10:24 AM (#1397880) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Now the trouble with storytellers is.....is this true? hmmm?? Read the above in over-the-top storyteller style and see what I mean... Tee Hee, sorry Kathy, couldn't resist it. |

There is a singaround (home for waifs and strays) in the Railway, Ditchling Rise on Wednesdays and a similar thing in the Jolly Brewer Ditchling Road on Sundays (same people as Wed so same style). Other than that you will need to travel to Lewes or Seaford on Thursday and Friday respectively. Ther is a website with all this on it but I am at work and don't have the URL at present. Dave |
05 Feb 05 - 07:10 PM (#1400211) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats Thanks, Dave. I've taken up Cllr on his offer of a lift to Bristol which means...... (drum roll here) I'll be at Miskin until Sunday afternoon...yippee!!!! So, There will be a Story Walk and Daniel's Band will have a female voice and, if you are very lucky, I might just sing a couple of times elsewhere too. Thanks Cllr for your generous offer... we can sing together now!! 06 Mar 05 - 04:43 PM (#1428309) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: My guru always said Just back from Crediton *smile* & looking forward to Miskin! For those going to Miskin on the Thursday, the Newport Folk Club is on, should be a Singers night. Don't think I'll get there till the Friday but I'm sure they'll welcome Miskinites with open arms. Have been chatting to a few people about Mudcatters organising a raffle at Miskin this year. Apparently this used to happen (prizes were mostly Easter Eggs - eggcellent tradition!!) but I don't recall it happening in the past couple of years. The Festival Crew are all up to their ears with lots of stuff to do, so I wondered if it was something we could sort out? Each bring something to put in, that sort of thing. Miskin's charity this year is the Road Rose Association ( www.roseroad.co.uk - web-page doesn't load for me at the moment), so it would be nice to raise some extra money for them. What do you think? |
06 Mar 05 - 05:28 PM (#1428327) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson How can I put this?? When the Miskin Arms changed hands some while ago it changed into a restaurant - with, effectively, a side bar. It was felt by the new management that folk music and the festival weekend itself were not appropriate to the new image. Because of this we have over the years honed our bar management skills to provide what we are now proud to think of as Real pub" within the Mill and left the Miskin Arms to the locals with whom we have established mutual respect. In the past we have finished work at a reasonable time Thursday evening and then travelled down to the Newport Folk Club some 15 miles away. This year we have the use of the Mill from Thursday afternoon with the idea of being a bit more ready and less tired out come the start on Friday. Volunters are welcome by prior arrangement but we will not be ready to start the festival proper until midday Friday (when the licences come into force) I hate to see a thirsty man so bring a few cans or something suitable for thursday evening, if you are not popping over to Newport. If you can't read between the lines please email or phone me for detailed arrangements. |
07 Mar 05 - 03:11 AM (#1428567) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Splott Man Pat Spoons won't be there unfortunately, she'll be with Baggywrinkle at Lancaster (She's a busy little girl see). If music rather than song is your thing, there's a sesh (fiddles and stuff) at the Canton Hotel in Canton, Cardiff on Thursdays (about 11 miles, oh, and Andy, Newport club is 22 from Pat's house so it would be about the same from the Mill - ooh there's pedantic!). I'll be running the Folk Club on Monday afternoon (at the Windsor Hotel as usual). I'll be winding up at about 5pm as I have a gig that evening, but the room is booked until stop-tap for those who want to carry on - but be warned, last year the pub booked a loud cabaret act in the room below in the evening, which made that part of the sesh difficult. See you there, Splott Man |

I have just found out from here that (and this beats Royal Weddings, Funerals and even Coronations as an important event) the most important TV event for years will be happening... 08 Mar 05 - 06:15 PM (#1430045) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Having worked my life in Telly, who am I to deny the need for such an appliance? A suitable receiving apparatus could indeed, and shall indeed, be provided, but knowing the unpredictabilities of reception patterns I feel unable at this juncture to guarantee the prevaling signal strength in such a low lying area as the Mill surrounds. Notwithstanding the above reservations, I see no reason to deprive such as yourselves from the full enjoyment of a weekend with normal "folk thinking" people, and I am sure a suitable solution can be found. yours in joint who-ness, Andy |

I will be unable to come to Miskin!!!!!! Sorry, No Corn Dolly workshops from me this year. Do have a go at lace making though, its fantastic! and Jillie and the lace babes are lovely! (so Kevin says) I go a phone call this morning telling me that I am going into Hospital on Wednesday and having my long awaited knee op. I will be home Thursday, but remembering the last op on the other knee, wont be feeling like festivalling until at least Monday and definately not upto running a workshop. I shall sit with a bottle of port and my feet up and think of you all. Have a great time, I know it will be brilliant and I am Gutted to miss it, but delighted that I am getting my knee sorted too!!!!! mixed emotions! Cheers, Lucy |

Not just for the corndollies but your ability to be in several places at once and your lovely smile. I've got your name down for a dance next year though, love to all, Andy |
17 Mar 05 - 05:17 PM (#1437171) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson I've had a request to allow impromptu Morris at Miskin......Allow? I would positively encourage such a thing. In days of Yore we had a very solid dance base. Things have changed though and sadly I cant guarantee suitable wet weather contingency plans. If anyone wants to bring Kit on the chance of a dance then we have plenty of room on the courtyard. And if it rains you'll just have to drown your sorrow. Or of course, carry on dancing as they mad buggers from Pompey did some years ago (see photos on site) Andy |
17 Mar 05 - 05:36 PM (#1437182) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Scooby Doo I remember that year Andy you stood in the middle of the dancers and got soaking wet, mind those Pompey dances would dance in any weather.Yas |

17 Mar 05 - 07:33 PM (#1437268) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Sue the Borderer Jillie told me to get myself onto mudcat pronto and beg for victims/volunteers - but I see Miskin Man has beaten me to it. However, as a mudcat virgin, (even though a MBS and its my 2nd Miskin,) it's a bit scary, so its taken me a day or two! Yes, it was I - I'm the one who asked Andy if we could run a scratch Border side at Miskin (as an offshoot of Herbaceous Border which creates mayhem at Sidmouth)So - bring your dancing shoes - and, if you dance already, your sticks and raggies etc (and even spares if you have them) ANYONE is welcome - whether or not you've ever danced before. And we'll need some musicians too. Not sure quite when and where it will be, but I'll keep you posted. It would be great to know who might be interested - so do say 'hi'. And thanks, Andy, for everything, including beating me to it. I think you deserve the 300. Sue PS Mudcat virginity about to be lost - so you can add my name to the list. |

On a different subject: I will only bring my 12-string Cort along, as I don't want to be carting two guitars everywhere (and I am told there is nowhere to store them, with the car park so far out), but if I need a 6-string for something, I hope I can borrow someone's... |

28 Mar 05 - 10:25 AM (#1445517) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MBSLynne Severe post-festival depression setting in already! A most fantastic weekend altogether (apart from rides in ambulances and waiting in A&E!) I don't think I've ever fitted quite so much into one short festival! In four days I've sung, played, run a folk club, danced border Morris for the first time, watched three lots of friends performing, danced in a 'scratch' ceilidh, played Pooh sticks, Walked across a bridge parapet, played lots of cool games around Jan's van, drunk a lot of cider, hugged loads of people, talked quite a lot, laughed, been part of the dragon in a procession, learnt practised and sung a song I'd never heard before with three others doing harmonies and things...... I didn't actually get time to SLEEP much, but you can't have everything! I also met a good number of Mudcatters I've never met before who are now on my ever-growing list of friends. Andy and all the team..thank you sooooomuch. It was truly brilliant. I think for the first time in 23 years, a festival has actually eclipsed Sidmouth for me!! There is no higher compliment. Lots and lots of love and hugs Lynne xxxxxxxx |
28 Mar 05 - 02:34 PM (#1445570) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Mrs.Duck Lynne, you missed out being hoisted aloft by burly men midsong! Absolutely fantastic weekend. We are no longer virgins and will be doing it all again next year. Thanks Andy and everyone that made this such a fun filled festival. I don't remember having such a hassle free weekend since the twins arrived; they and Maddie loved every minute of it. The singing, the beer, the friends old and new! Now for the come down! Can't wait to get into chat and relive some of it! |
28 Mar 05 - 02:41 PM (#1445571) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MBSLynne No, nor can I wait to get into the chat, but the main entrance has been down every time I've tried it since 3.00. Just when I needed it most!!! And you're right Jane, how could I have forgotten being carted about near the ceiling by various large men in Nelly Dean's while trying to sing! I think I managed it though! Yes, the kids had a wonderful time too...they really enjoyed their first go at Stewarding and have every intention of doing it again next year. Love Lynne |

28 Mar 05 - 04:18 PM (#1445598) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Snuffy The old Miskin Magic has worked again - and better than ever before. Three days of wonderful fare for absolutely everyone - singers, dancers, musicians, kids, performers, spectators. And what a friendly bunch both providing and consuming all the offerings, under the expert and benign control of Andy Jillie and Jo. And special thanks and hugs from me to the Lynnettes (Linnets?). When I made a request on Friday for Rock My Heart to be sung sometime over the weekend, little did I expect that it would lead to the formation of a new group to learn, rehearse and perform the song in time for Sunday night. Ladies, your performance was absolutely spine-tingling, and I am absolutely speechless that you would go to such lengths. You have made a happy man very old :-) Miskin truly does go that extra mile. Many thanks to every one of you who came and helped to make the last four days one of the most magical times. |

29 Mar 05 - 03:55 AM (#1445723) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Splott Man through the cat flap My highlights: Jon Heslop & Kathy Wallis in the Cottage Saturday teatime - passionate. Mary Humphries & Anahata - new to me and so entertaining. The magnificent work done by Jan the Van and her crew for the parade - the dragon and hobby horses. Plus the the triple pipes of Vicky, Johnny and Colman leading the parade. The quiet sessions upstairs where you could sing or play what you wanted rather than do crowd-pleasers. Luasca (Harriet Earlis & Colman Connolly) with Vicky Swan & Johnny Dyer sitting in. When quality musicians like these get together, they don't just jam, they produce something magical and exciting. Jon Heslop again, Sunday late in Nelly Dean's - sorry, don't know what the song was, just loved the joyous harmony singing. Splott Man |

Loved every second, including the hangovers & scrubbing the kitchen on Monday! Thanks to AllCats for all the help & support for the MudRaffle - not to mention all the Fab prizes! We managed to raise £313.13 (a numeric palindrome which only needed the extra 3p popping in) for the Rose Road Association. It was handed to 'Michael's Mum' who was absolutely delighted and will be trying to find her way in here to thank us all personally. The last unclaimed raffle prize (the lovely liquer chocolate egg) was handed over too for Michael (over 18) to enjoy. A fitting end to a really enjoyable bit of fund-raising. Thanks again everyone who came, gave, helped & didn't get pissed off at my novice sales techniques...... Will pop in later (if I can find my way) to post the MudSigner List - what an enormous amount of Catters there were.. I can't imagine how they all managed to get in the MudShoot!! I worked out that over 40 people danced, only 5 of whom were 'Borderers' and most had never morrissed before at all. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE MUSICIANS WHO PLAYED FOR US. You were magnificent - and we couldn't have done it without you. 'Herbaceous Border' hopes to dance at Upton (probably 6pm daily under the Bridge) and various other festivals during the year (as well as Sidmouth where it first began. I'll post details somewhere. Next year, wouldn't it be easier to count the number of people there who AREN'T Mudcatters?? Having mentioned some of the things I did over the weekend, I forgot to say that one of my highlights was seeing Rosanna, Tom and Louise get the trophy. Andy is absolutely right in saying they are our future. They (and of course all the other kids too) make sure that there IS a future, not just for folk music, but for the whole folk ethos. They got the most applause I heard all weekend (and that's saying something!) and they were all so pleased, it nearly made me cry. It was a wonderful introduction to folk festivals for Louise. The harmonies in the bar were magic - and I don't think it was just "Beer Hearing Aids". Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and good wishes - and in return, hope that Mick Tems and all the other "Strokey Folkies" manage to progress further in their recoveries. Perhaps Andy should apply for a grant from the NHS for the theraputic powers of the festival (especially Jude's cuddles), which have definitely made me feel much better. |

31 Mar 05 - 07:49 AM (#1447765) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mick Tems In reponse to Splott Man's message about the number of musicians at the ceilidh and Buttered Peas – I was playing a familiar Welsh tune of striking similarity called Pwt Ar Y Bys (A Vamp On The Fingers) which the Romany harpers would use for a warm-up exercise. Perhaps the story revolves around the age-old sessions, somewhere on the border between England and Wales, where English musicians would hear Welsh harpers playing this tune – and they would spread the tune across Cheshire, Lancashire or all other localities, each carrying a delightful mishearing of the name of the tune. (Mishearings and mistakes are all too common in tradition - (The New Scorpion Band researched a group of musicians in the Napoleonic Wars. The members had as their party piece a tune called The Downfall Of Pears, despite composer M. Becourt's naming of this piece The Downfall Of Paris.) I'm not claiming which came first, because both Welsh and English musicians had a habit of totally ignoring political boundaries. Just compare Pwt Ar Y Bys to Buttered Peas, and draw your own conclusions. |
31 Mar 05 - 08:59 AM (#1447831) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mick Tems Hi Dave, Strokey folkies - I really do like that! I was talking to Chris at Sunday's ceilidh about the important need to form an alternative stroke association which would cater for musicians, and you seem to have hit the nail on the head! The bar-cum-singing room was just too busy for me to have a good talk with you, but with three of us, mountains can be moved. Watch this space... |
31 Mar 05 - 03:02 PM (#1448177) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Tradsinger The missus and me really enjoyed the festival. Missed out on the MC photo, though, as I didn't know there would be one. Ah well, I'll get to know the rules better when I've been in Mudcat longer. Will there be a MC reunion at Sidmouth, I wonder? 31 Mar 05 - 07:34 PM (#1448446) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Seems to have gone quiet!!!! Right then if you've done with the thank yous. It's my go now. THANK YOU, all of you - you have generated enthusiasm and interest in an incredible way. I can see no easy way of limiting tickets but long ago went down the path of limited publicity, and with the Miskin Mud Moggies on board, publicity went to the right people. Special thanks of course to My Guru, for the idea the enthusiasm and the follow through to raise such a grand amount with the raffle. I know that the Rose Road Association were amazed at the response for a cause so far from Wales. But then most of those who come to Miskin are from a fair way away. Although I am never going to run another one, plans are well started for next year, with guests booked and even ticket reservations already! This is the first chance I've had to write any sort of chat and today I am taking Eyelander away for a few days in Suffolk. On my return I shall attack the website and attempt some sort of report for those that missed it. Tarra each, Andy |
01 Apr 05 - 05:04 AM (#1448722) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: kitchen piper Hello! Miskin is such a lovely start to the festval season, (just warm enough not to need a hot water bottle in the van). We had such a great time! I mentioned that I was doing this thing called podcasts, well, I did a podcast for Miskin. It's never going to recapture the feeling or the atmosphere, but I thought that you might want to have a listen, especially Andy might want to listen to the the third track that I chose... Miskin Podcast If you're not familiar with podcasting, it's just an mp3 file to listen to a bit like radio, you just need to download it. If you're familiar with blogging and rss, it's basically an audio blog that you can rss. I hope that's ok, I was a bit nervous about mentioning it here... >looks bashful< Thanks for a great weekend anyway! :-)) Vicki |
