BS: Ghanaian sweets

Questions for the UKers here. I was in London yesterday, and a Ghanaian gave me some *delicious* sweets, made with chillie and ginger. Very hot. Very yummy.

They're called Ahomka, and say Trebor on the wrapper.

So I looked up Trebor and found Cadbury Trebor - but the site doesn't let you just email in an enquiry; they want to know your name, "title" (Lord Muck, me), street number and address, zip code (wha?), etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. It's just rude.

Does anyone know where to get these sweets? I've tried a few African shops in Dublin today, but they seemed to be run by Nigerians, and didn't know what I was talking about. I could get some in London next time I'm there, I suppose - there's a shop called Accra that stocks them - but it would be great to find them online.

Someone did a funny photo essay, sort of, with commentary on someone trying to eat them at this site. I found just a "Trebor" page, without the Cadbury, and it had ginger sweets, but not those ones.

They sound delicious! Never heard of them in all my years next door in Ivory Coast, nor on my trips to Ghana, so if you find out when they were "invented" (or packaged, or something), let me know, I'm curious. I first heard of hot pepper with chocolate in the movie Chocolat, and it sounded great, I haven't remembered to try it yet...

I can't understand why Cadbury's/Trebor isn't marketing these internationally. Mmmmmm!

Been to Ghana. Never saw them there. Maybe it's like trying to buy an orange in Florida.

Do you know where the sweetshop is? I could track them down and post them to you.

I know they're available in London in a shop called Accra - thanks very much for the offer, Monitor, but I'm often in London and can get them there. Prefer if I could get them in Dublin, though!

No problem. If you wrote a cheesey letter to Cadburys though I reckon they would send you shedloads!

Where abouts in London is this Accra place? Is it in Dalston by any chance?

Someone gave me one of these Ahomka things the other night, and I'm HOOKED.

Ahomka
I was over in Ghana for a month a few years ago and fell for these big style. As Charlotte says, once you get past the hurty bit they are delicious, especially if you are, as I am, a ginger fan. I took a big kick-ass bag how with me, but my luggage allowance would not allow all I wanted. It didn't last near long enough. I must hunt them down in the UK!

G'day JTT,

There a page, by someone whose friend brought some back from Ghana ... and left them on her desk!

Ahomka "sweets"

I yhink I'll stick with Australian Buderim Ginger "Naked Ginger" ... much safer and the low GI of natural fruit sugars is much less compromising of my 'diet'!

Regards,

Bob
