Subject: BS: Kendall's biopsy
From: kendall

Ok folks, come Monday morning, I will learn if this growth on my right vocal cord is a cyst or cancer. I can use all the healing energy you can spare.

I just pulled out a mirror and a beautiful liquid wax candle that belonged to my mother. As I lit it, the thought occured to me (from where, I cannot say) that you've given your immune system the best possible boost--you're in love! That's a powerful drug when facing a challenge like this. The best of luck to you [both]!

Kendall's biopsy: I was born long ago in Eastern Maine, the youngest of 411 children...
walked to school in the snow thirteen miles each way, up hill going and coming. ... refused to grow up until someone gave me a banjo... since then have made a career telling people things that aren't true, singing songs and distressing eligible women...but I am one helluva folksinger, anyway...

What do you mean, spelling?

Well, we've not long got back from the hospital. Kendall is a little tired but is finding it difficult to comply with doctor's orders and not talk! He is, however, doing somewhat as he is told, even if just for a short while.

The doctor has 'some concerns' about what the growth is and we have to wait a few days for the biopsy results now. They can't really say how long that will take but we should have the results before the end of the week.

We'll keep you posted.

I'm sure this must be HELL for you. I know, I've also sweated out biopsy reports. Kendall, your "voice" is much more than the noises that come from your throat. It is there in how you convey your thoughts, in your word choices, in what you write, and in preferences you express in many ways. How you make sounds to convey those words is important, but there are many other ways to communicate. Were you to be struck dumb tomorrow, you'd still have plenty to say and many who want to read or otherwise understand your meaning. In a choice between your life or your vocal chords, you won't lose your "voice."

PS. What Stilly said. Your "voice" is more than the noises that come from your throat, even with fully functioning vocal chords. In the worse case scenerio (which I am not foreseeing), I fulling expect you to invent your own banjo language... after all, a banjo is much more portable than an orchestral harp...

I got the results yesterday, and it is not good. The cancer is back. Next step is a C.A.T. scan to see if it has spread. If it has, all bets are off. If not, I have to choose among three options:
1 Total removal of voice box. No voice at all.
2 Partial removal. That would mean being left with a raspy voice.
2 Removal of just the cancer by laser or scalpel. That would mean a raspy voice and the chance of the cancer coming back.
Life sucks sometimes.

Kendall, it may not be much consolation to you, right now, but for a long time the only voice of yours many of us knew were your written words, right here on the Mudcat. You will ALWAYS have a voice, regardless of any physical changes. Now that I have head you on CD, your actual spoken voice is indelibly "inked" in my brain. It is so distinctive and easy to conjure up because of its quality, it will never be silent regardless of any physical changes. Just wanted you to know that.

Remember, too, all of the Mudcat love, good thoughts, Light, etc. that have come your way and helped along. They are still there for you to tap into. As much as you can, use your power of visualisation and *see* the best possible outcome...second opinions are always good in such cases!

We are here for you and jacqui,

Kendall, Frank and I are so sorry to hear your biopsy results. It's a tough choice, but I personally would go for the most aggressive removal of the cancer. You've had a raspy voice since I first met you several years ago, and it's part of your charm now. You (and we) have the recordings to remember your beautiful voice. Most of us never had a beautiful voice to begin with! And now you've got a new path opening up for you with your wedding to a wonderful lady (I'm told by you, and I hear on the Mudcat). With or without a voice, we're happy to have you around, so keep on doing what you have to and keep on being around.

Well geeziz Kendall.....I haven't been in much this past week and missed this entirely and I gotta' tell ya', it really bites the big one. I'm trying to think of something light to say but you make it pretty damn hard......I mean coming up with something light to say is the hard thing..... not pretty damn hard as in Viagra........well, you know what I mean.

Lessee here........uh......oh, I got one! A couple of Rabbis are touring a sausage factory and the one notices that.............wait a minute, that one's not all that funny because they end up with trichinosis. Oh, I know! How about the one about the guy with only one ball but he has three scrotums? ....................aw hell, everyone knows that one. .............well crapperdoodles Batman!   I'm drawing a blank here.

While I think about it, you concentrate on doing the best for yourself because we all love you...........uh, that's another one I don't mean in the Viagra sense........but uh, well...you know what I mean.......I hope..............

Cap'n, I have been in computer hell for nigh onto two months, and have only just gotten back and reset my cookie. I suspect when I wade through my email I will find one there too. This is the first chance I have had to read through a few threads, before heading off to play three cities in three days, the middle one with Seamus Kennedy.

This news sucks, and I must tell you that it makes me sad. I consider you a dear friend, and I wish I could take this away. You have been in my prayers as this has played out, and will continue to be. I remember being angry with you at how you were dealing with it a year ago. But I must tell you that when I read this, and the thread about you and jacqui c. getting married (that woman must be trying to earn her way into heaven by suffering on earth ...... hahahaha) in the face of this, I was so proud of you. You sure you ain't got some Irish in you somewhere?? It seems like a testament to the both of you that you are embracing this and working your way through. Often we cannot control the cards we are dealt, but we are in firm control of how we play them. I like the way you are playing these. It's a shitty hand, but you will play it well, with the assistance of a good partner. I can't wait to see you in October, and toast the happy event. And don't go getting pissy when I give the new bride a big hug and kiss. This is going to be a grand party. But I have one question. Can she throw a bowline?

Oh ..... and one more thing. "nervous as a Christian Scientist with a severed artery"? Where do you come up with this shit? Computer is back online less than a day and I have spit coffee all over the damned thing.

All the best,

Mick

Kendall,

I've been meaning to send you an encouraging message about my own experience -- I've spent most of 2004 (since discovering a lump in my neck and visting a doctor on New Year's Eve) dealing with my own throat cancer, and I am lucky enough to be healing up nicely now and getting *almost* back to normal.

Now that I'm back from hurricane evacuation and have read this whole thread, I can see that you're facing a tougher set of choices than I had to confront. I'm not even going into any more detail about my own situation, which isn't that much like yours, after all.

I'll say this much: I was always aware of the support, prayers, etc., of many friends and family, and I was always able to maintain such a positive attitude that my doctors and nurses often commented upon it. Did my positive mindset help bring about my eventual recovery, or was I able to maintain that good attitude only because I somehow knew I'd come out of it relatively OK? Who knows? All we can know for sure is that faith and hope can't hurt, so you might as well conjure up as much as you can for yourself.

It's very encouraging to see that you're starting out on a new marriage at the very time that you have to confront this nasty disease. Staying hopeful and orienting yourself to the future rather than to the past is probably the very best medicine for you, so you seem to be on the right path. You've got plenty of good friends, all over the world, sending you all the positive energy they can muster. Hang in there, buddy.

Thanks, CapriUni, for saying what I was about to. Some times this crusty old son of a misbegotten deck ape doesn't get that we don't love him because of his voice. It's him that we care about. Quite frankly, I could care less if he sings and tells jokes, writes songs and passes me notes with great lines, or if he tattoos them on his wrinkled old ass. It is only important to me that I still have him as my friend, and mentor.

I was very attracted to this guy before I even met him - purely from the things he wrote - and have only ever known him since he has had a problem with his voice. I love Kendall for what he is now - not for the voice I never heard until AFTER I knew that I loved him. I must admit that when I listened to Beginner's Luck for the first time I cried because I could go somewhere toward understanding his loss then, but he makes me laugh and I know that I have found someone I want to spend my life with, whether or not he can ever sing again. Kendall knows this because I've told him so but he can be a stubborn b****r! I would prefer Kendall without a singing voice to no Kendall at all.

I'm glad that others are now telling him the same thing - he still has a lot he can do - storytelling can still be done, even if he can't sing, he can play a mean guitar and he can write another book of tall tales.

Of course we understand the loss--losing other parts of our functionality is a shock, surgical removal of an organ or a limb, but our eyes, ears, and voice, those are our interface with the world. Losing any one of those makes the other two work harder and means things will never be exactly the same again.

Kendall, your friends and loved ones are urging you to choose life. Make the choice that to you and your doctors gives you the best chance for a long and curmudgeonly life. And if you have a few options to choose between with the same relative outcome, then you're fortunate and can choose to give yourself the most latitude. As a friend told me when I was making a similar choice regarding cancer surgery, "don't choose based on recuperation from the surgery, choose based on recovering from the cancer."

Good luck!

Aw bairns i missed this with being down south at hospital with my stubborn bissim. You are Both in our thoughts and prayers. Jacqui write it in the biggest thickest book you can find and keep hitting him with it till he gives in, mine came up with a beaut while in hospital "If i had known i was going to put you through all this I would never have married you." yeah right like they have any choice :)

Of course its not wrinkled Kendal my dear, it is just gently folded at regular intervals.

Kendall,
I have been in your house. There are two mirrors - one in the bathroom and a big one in the living room. I have a hard time picturing you balancing on a futon or the toilet seat trying to get a good look at your butt. How do you know it's not wrinkled? More importantly, how does Amos know it is?

Kendall, you might be the cap'n, but there's mutiny in the wind. Listen to the crew.

Know this, too: my wife has had one functioning vocal cord since she was 17. Thyroid cancer; the surgery froze one and nicked the one that's left. She can't shout and sings only in church (and admits that she doesn't do it very well). BUT!! You annoy her and she can blister the tar off a rope. She's going on 43 or 44 years cured of cancer. If she can do it, so can you. She says that she never considered any other option than complete cure, then or now.

I've just heard from Kendall that the cancer hasn't grown or spread and that the doctor thinks that it can be dealt with by way of laser surgery. He will have to see the specialist in Boston on Thursday to confirm that he is suitable for laser treatment but at least the cancer is still contained.

The made the appointment when they didn't know if the tumor was growing. It doesn't seem to be, so they thought it was safe to move you in and stick in some other person in there who had a giant monster tumor. Either that, or they've made a huge mistake and need to be complained at. Even if they're NOT worried, it's tough when you want to get this behind you.

But raspy voice? RASPY VOICE!!!!????

Woody Guthrie, noone's idea of Pavarotti, still converts hearers, and he's been dead for how many years? I'm not a major Dylan fan, but he's another iffy-voicd singer who appeals to people. And I know folks who hold their breath listening to Dave van Ronk... It ain't the tone-quality, it's what's said.

The most important job in the world is Storytelling. It's the way we learn to know truth, love, decency, beware of viciousness. You were right about lying: Real Storytellers never lie. They find verbally creative ways to present inner, eternal truths.

I've just heard from Kendall who has seen the Boston specialist today.

They will be operating on 2nd November and have confirmed that the cancer can be dealt with using laser surgery. At the worst, if they have problems accessing the area he may have to have a temporary tracheotomy for a few days but it is more likely that they will be able to do the work without cutting his throat!

They are going to want him to stay in hospital at least overnight and he has been told that, as there is a certain amount of inflammation around the area from his forcing his voice too much (probably ranting about Bush!)he must, for the moment, start speaking more softly so not to increase the inflammation. After the operation he has to rest his voice for a while so won't be able to express his feelings about the election results very vociferously this year.

While waiting for the other shoe to fall just mentally kick the crap out of the thing that ails you.
Cysts wall themselves up and shrink, Cancers can be starved and shrink.

Besides, you are bigger than it.

This month I lost my hearing and thought I detached a retina.
I see better than ever now and hear more every day.
Life is a hoot. Celebrate the hooters.

It even comes in different colours, jacqui!

(Donuel, celebrate the hooters, indeed. Good to *hear* you are well despite the non-hooters.:-)

Really good news! Yes, I agree with JennyO-Feel free to rant and rave via MC, Kendall, as we'd miss you sorely if you didn't. And get your absentee ballot now (I'm just in the process of filling mine out) and let er rip!

Jacqui, there's an entire website devoted to the uses of duct tape, and some are pretty imaginative ideas (thinking of your wedding night). Let me know if I should track it down for you.

Kendall, not only is it GREAT news but it's a good day as well. It's also my wedding anniversary and has been a preety good day for positive energy in this household for almost 20 years.

We'll have to "help" you stay quiet at Getaway... Hmmm maybe is everyone brings one roll of duct tape Jacqui might have enough to keep you quiet for a month or so of recuperation.... Just an idea...Any favorite colors Jacqui????

Hey there, my favorite Yankee!! I've been AWOL from here for a while; but, I'm so glad to see that the technique to be used for your surgery won't be so invasive. Fraptious day! ;-)

Be good, do what the doctors tell you (even though I know those two things are very hard for you to do - hahahaha).

Big hogs and snugs, Áine

If Kendall actually finds it painful to pull off, maybe you should rethink the whole thing....
