Ebbie suggested the idea for this thread in the Exceptional People thread. (who introduced you to Mudcat?)

Sandra in Sydney and jenny kept talking about mudcat over a period of time. I looked in here and there but didnt really get it. then jennyo came over one day in December and gave me a mudcat lesson (thanks jen).

Mudcat has been good for me - i work for the government in quite a controlled workplace, and have to be diplomatic with the clients i work with. as part of my job I'm discouraged from commenting in public on any political issue, and have to maintain a low profile. mudcat has given me the freedom of being able to comment (under my pseudonym freda) and so has helped reinforce who i really am, as opposed to who i am at work.

mudcat is a forum for the old storytelling and discussion that used to happen around the campfire. I have lived in the Newtown area (sydney) for 20 years or so. Up the road in King st there used to be an illegal gambling joint. All the old Greek men used to sit outside having coffee, smoking cigarettes, and talking and arguing in the sun.

mudcat is like a cyber version of that - a wealth of information, and the great experience of talking, debating with people around the planet.

who introduced you to mudcat, or did you just stumble across it through the web?

About 9 months ago, I was searching for the lyrics of Jack O Diamonds by Lonnie Donegan, for a very specific reason.
I did a search on google, and saw a mudcat link.
I went to have a look and posted my thread on the above subject. I got lots of help and finally finished up with the correct lyrics.
I joined as a member straight away, having thumbed through some of the threads.
Due to joining Mudcat and without intending to, 3 months later I finished up starting a folk club in Market Rasen and its still going. I am not even an artist!!!!!
So much is the power and influence of MUdcat.
Excellent website.

At Durham (UK) Folkworks Summer School four years ago I met an American fiddler who at the end of the week handed me a piece of paper saying "You might be interested in this" It was Mudcat web address.

I bought a computer magazine with a cover disk on it in about (?) 1996. My eyes popped out of my head when I saw that it included the entire Digital Tradition.

Then I came here and lurked, for a year or two

then I signed up, forgot my name and password.

Signed up again.

It is the most useful, entertaining, informative place for me personally on the web.

Having been talked into getting a 'puter with internet facility by a variety of folkie friends who seemed to spend all their time sending each other e-mails about everything under the sun it was a natural progression to follow Admiral (and others) into Mudcat . As with a lot
of other people I started just looking , then posted a few times as a named Guest , then decided to join - AND have never regretted it .

Blame Dani for my appearance on Mudcat. For a couple of years she had urged me to go with her to this thing she called the Getaway. I finally said OK. Went. Was wowed by the FSGW and the Mudcat folks, and joined as soon as I got home (with Carol C.'s coat.)

My brother in Paris, whom I don't see very often, decided he would like to get me a good Xmas/birthday present near the end of 2002, and he conspired with my son, who is a bit of a computer wiz, to get me a computer, with all the bells and whistles, and a year's internet connection paid for.

Enter my friend Sandra in Sydney, who, as soon as she heard about my good fortune, started nagging me to join Mudcat. I posted as a guest a few times, but had not got around to joining, till along came Daylia, also a guest. Anyway, we encouraged each other to join, and did, within a few hours of each other.

From then on it was all downhill :-) - the rest is history. When freda got the internet on at home, I encouraged her to join, and she took to Mudcat like the proverbial duck to water.

I've learned a lot about computers in the last couple of years - still have a lot more to learn, but my favourite place on the net has to be Mudcat. I love it. So thanks, Sandra. And thanks freda for getting me hooked on the chatroom.

I watched the Digital Tradition get born by knowing Dick Greenhaus and Susan of DT and others on the East coast of the USA who were converting notebooks to computer disks, so when Dick found Max and they worked out how to combine the DT with Max's site, I knew about it early and was posting within a few weeks of its origin...almost 8 years now!

I guess you could say I got here through an online Peter, Paul and Mary fan club on Prodigy. When Prodigy started charging by the minute, the surviving members of the group moved to a computer board in Maine, operated by Noel "Paul" Stookey of PP&M. I became fairly well acquainted with Noel through that bulletin board, and that was a nice experience. Also got me several concert tickets and backstage passes, and one time I sat right next to Noel in his dressing room while he sang a new song. I didn't like the song very much, but his guitar work was extraordinary and I love his resonant voice.

One of the Prodigy people sent me a copy of the Digital Tradition on floppy disks in about 1992, and Noel had an online copy of the DT and also a link to rec.music.folk. I also discovered alt.music.lyrics, and developed an interest in sleuthing for songs. From there I was led to the Xerox site for the Digital Tradition. I think that disappeared sometime in 1996, and then Max opened up Mudcat as a forum for Digital Tradition requests, submission, and discussion on October 1, 1996 (click). It took me until early January, 1997, to find Mudcat. Been here ever since. Blame it on Peter, Paul and Mary.

My sister's (wee redhead, third from the left) group, The Pyrates Royale, has a link to Mudcat on their website. I was visiting my parents' house at the same time she was in July 2000, and I wanted to find some European circus music to play on my accordion. She brought up her site, showed me the link, and gave me a short lesson on how to post. Prior to then, I was an internet virgin.

Through the Mudcat, and the people I've gotten to know here, my life has changed completely from what it was before. And that includes the wonderful help I've recieved in becoming a better accordion player.

Seamus Kennedy got me into this fine mess.

Actually I was at a concert by Seamus, and I met him as he was selling some of his fine cds. (yes, I bought one). I asked him if he had lyrics and chords to his music, as I would like to learn some of his songs. He said he learned everything by ear, but that I might want to try Mudcat.org. I did, and I love it.

Still love Seamus, his music, his lyrics and his guitar playing. Wish he would produce a song book though.

Hows about it Seamus? You could call it, "Everything I Learned by Ear."

Art told me about this place first, and through time I heard Sandy and Caroline Paton mention, Lisa Null and others. First time I stopped in here, it didn't interest me and it was a few months before I checked it out again.

Bob Bolton was always talking about Mudcat, always putting the URL on the top of the page of interesting websites in "Mulga Wire". So when I eventually got this dear little laptop & went online, the first site I visited was Mudcat. I lurked a bit before contibuting (as Guest, Sandra) then joining & have never looked back.

Lots of us apparently contributed to Mudcat before posting as members, but I contributed before I even used the Internet! Bob posted some pictures I took of the 2001 visit of Charlie Noble & Landlady's Daughter. One of these pics even includes freda.

After my recent crash when I was re-establishing my bookmarks, the first one I added was Mudcat, which is now my homepage.

Like many of us, I think, I used the old DigiTrad for lyrics until it was no longer to be found. Some time went by before a friend told me that someone else had picked it up. Took me quite awhile to click on the Forum though- I thought it was a Chat Room. (Horrors!

Finally I started visiting, lurking about, until January 1, 2000 when a thread was posted asking people all over the world to check in to report on how the Y2K thing was affecting us.

Now I can't imagine doing without it.

I was hooked from then on, and even though I haven't been on regularly, I treasure the 'cat so much. I was always looking for lyrics back then, and an aquaintance at a local session mentioned mudcat. I still browse the lyrics regularly, and I am grateful. I tok on the 'Thomas the Rhymer" name when I was just looking up and learning the song ("C" words with the "A" tune) and the rest is history.

Cllr - not true. I'm still vertical and breathing and avoiding Ampthill. However, not avoiding Mudcat although only as a guest at the moment (work internet can be SO helpful). Found out about it from the likes of Leadfingers and the Admiral and found it both useful and entertaining and slightly addictive. Did have a dodgy moment some time ago when I typed in Mudchute instead of Mudcat and found myself up Bow Creek without a paddle and had to wait for the tide to float me back.

My old Rhode Island bluegrass band, the Roughstone Ramblers, had a reunion in Vermont in 1999 or 2000. I flew in from Detroit. A couple of my former bandmates told me about Mudcat. They're alive and well but they don't post any more. Meanwhile you're all stuck with me. I've learned a lot on the Mudcat and greatly enjoy reading and posting.

Song sourcing and found when the song did not come up on the D.T., you could asked and it usually would show up.
After tracking threads and being in the middle of the BS threads, I had to retreat my activities. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. I still like to look in every once in while and check the threads.
Joe has done a great job as thread cop and the Mudcat looks much healthier than in the past when gargoyle(s) were in the practice of ruining every decent thread that came along.
That's how I got here and the reason I come and go.

By accident. When searching the lyrics of the Greenland Whale Fishery I was led by a link to the DigiTrad. Must have happened in 1999.
Months later I discovered

- b) the possibility to enlist
and decided to participate when I was sure to contribute something essential about German folk songs or/and German politics (in your humble servant's opinion).

Got here via Rock Chick when we she came back to my place after a late night session a little the worse for wear. "I know! says she" (Big She) that's her nickname NO reflection on body size :-) better add that in case she reads this. Lets log you on to Mudcat it's a fantastic site, so she sorted it all out for me and even named me bless her! Been adicted ever since. I am constantly amazed at the wealth of information and interesting posts, you never know what each day is going to bring. Big Thanks to all you guys who work hard to keep it all going for us.

Waaaaaaay back in the dark ages before the internet was anything like it is today, the only way to download something was through FTP format. I was using that to download lyrics from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. That later went out of business, and a personal note to the site revealed that the lyrics that were there could be found at a place called Mudcat. If any of you have downloaded from the UWM site, you will notice that the format of many of the songs is exactly the same as the earlier songs on Mudcat. What used to take about 3 to 5 minutes to FTP a set of lyrics at that time takes me about 3 to 5 SECONDS today.

The original UWM site had lyrics for a variety of genre of songs, and "folk music" was just a small segment. I don't know what happened to the other songs that were available.

Some years back I had a computer, but not internet capability. Jerry Middaugh, a folksinging friend of mine, did, and one afternoon he presented me with a big stack of 5¼" floppies (this was a few years ago) containing copies of something he had downloaded from the internet: the Digital Tradition database. Fantastic stuff! I went berserk going through all that material!

Then, in fall of 1999 I got a new computer, subscribed to Earthlink, and started surfing the internet. One of the first things I looked for was Digital Tradition. I couldn't find it at first, but by spending sufficient time blundering around, I stumbled into Mudcat, where DT now resides. As I explored the site, I clicked on the forum link, and discovered a whole new world.

I lurked for awhile, then with sheer delight, I found Sandy Paton's name appearing on some of the threads. I knew Sandy before he left Seattle in the early Fifties, then saw him again at the 1960 Berkeley Folk Festival where he was one of the featured performers. While reading one of the threads where Sandy posted, I felt moved to toss in a comment or two of my own. I received a warm welcome from Bert, Bev and Jerry, and 'Spaw and, I've been messin' around here ever since.

Sorta like losing your virginity, I guess. It's pleasant and kinda weird, then after you get over the initial bewilderment, you're inclined to try it again. But you never know where it's liable to lead. . . .

I got here on April 8, 1998. I was looking for information about the gauges on Leadbelly's strings. I kept coming back until I got the information. I had done a pretty extensive search and Mudcat was the only place that had an answer. I read the "bluesman bios" and browsed the forum and I was hooked. Since being here I can only quote Dr. Suess: "Oh, the places you will go". I have met wonderful people on-line and in person. I have had some wonderful musical experience. Simply put it was a seminal event in my life to stumble upon the Mudcat.

It is addictive and, for me, life changing 'cause here I am getting ready to get married again to another Mudcatter and move 3000 to Maine to live! I've also made a lot of good friends, some of whom I've met, through the site.

I could blame Naemanson, as he kept talking about how all the rest of us Roll & Go folks ought to check out Mudcat. I resisted for over a year before finally accessing the website; I blundered around, and actually found a song in the DT that I co-authored in 1976 called "Landlord's Lullaby." I began wondering who had posted it here and began a few guest posts. Never did find out who posted it but by that time I'd gotten hooked. I had lots of fun the first year just running down all the loose music fragments that were cluttering up my brain, and occasionally supplying lyrics to other folks.

Then when my wife and I were planning a trip to Australia, I found that I could actually encounter real Mudcat people, swap songs with them, have fun, and like I'd never have found them from the guide books. And two years later we were able to pay back Naemanson by introducing him to the Oz gang. Thanks again Bob Bolton, Margaret Walters, Jenny-o, Freda, Jack Halyard, Sandra, JennieG, for guiding us through your wonderful part of the world. And don't forget, we're willing to do the same for you in Maine.

I've also enjoyed Mudcat as a place to test new songs, or adaptations of poems as songs. There are some wonderful resource people here, and co-collaborators when it comes to bizarre topics.

But I sometimes go a whole day without checking in. So I'm not really addicted, am I?

Of course, when I got ready to post this yesterday evening, it wouldn't post but I've learned to "save" my posts!

Sometime in 2002 a Mudcatter who now calls himself Q visited my website www.cocojams.com. Q then emailed me about the commentary I had written about one of the songs that was featured on that site, 'Jim Along Josie'. Q & I exchanged several emails about that song & about other African American secular slave songs. He also encouraged me to visit a folk music site called Mudcat.

Well I had started my website with the technical assistance of a friend and was very unsure of myself when it came to traveling to new places on the Internet. I can't remember if Q left a clicky or not, but I eventually found my way to Mudcat. When I got here I hadn't a clue what I was seeing so I left. But for some reason, I kept this URL.

Within another year, I had got hooked on blogging by first getting up my nerve and eventually actively posting on the wesley clark blog. When that blog was deactivated, I found myself politically disallusioned. I also found that I was addicted to blogging but without a cyberspace home.

Somehow I remembered Mudcat, and revisited this site in Sept.2004. As a result of my experiences with the wesleyclark blog, I felt more confident about posting. I lurked here for about a month, jumped into a thread in Oct 2004, and started my first thread about a month later.
Often I run into Q on the threads I post on.

I want to publicly thank you Q for alerting me to this wonderful resource. Not only have I learned a lot about folk music & different cultures within cultures, but I have also met such interesting people!

I came across it when checking out some lyrics. A link took me to the DT and then I had a look at the rest of the site. I read some of the posts and enjoyed them for the variety of opinions, ideas, reverence and irreverance, so I decide to join.

I have now met quite a few of the UK catters plus Kendall and Jacqui as well as Jacko in NZ, all greta people.

Many I only know from their cyber presence and there are some good people there too.

My only complaint is that it is adictive.

Got to talking with someone at a Castlebay concert (I KNOW he must've introduced himself, but I was a bit sieve-brained that evening) and he told me about Mudcat. I checked it out, found some way cool lyrics, lots of fascinating folklore, and a bunch of BS. Gee, it's just like hanging out with a bunch of folk musicians!!! I've also made some great friends, both in the real world and in cyberspace. Think I'll stick around a bit longer...

A jammin' buddy told me something about some "mud cat" site in the middle of a loud Irish session. Having worked in home improvments for a few years, I thought it was a piece of heavy equipment or something. Later on I was looking for some songe or tune or something, & came across it. I then remembered my bud & realized this must've been the place. That's been awhile, and I agree with ShanghaiCeltic-it's addictive! Ducked in and had a look when it was mentioned in the Folk Alliance list maybe? Or another one of the folk/trad music lists or groups, though I can't recall which one.

DT has never had much of the music I'm interested in, the forum is much too Anglo and Anglo American centric and politically conservative for my tastes, so I come and go here like I do with the other folk music lists and groups I haunt now and then. They've become quite dull, compared to the mid-90s heyday of online folk forums.

I still enjoy the personalities of the group over at Arlo's board the most. Mudcat personalities the least, really. There are some truly obnoxious people around here.

Sorry BillD, but there just ain't any Karelian, Tejano, zydeco music stuff around here, or near enough l'esprit de joie, not to mention new grass or new folk to keep me interested for long. That isn't the forum's fault, it's just the way it is.

I find the majoritarian (above the BS line) Britfolk and their Anglo American Britfolk "purist" wannabes to be tiresomely arrogant and stuck up as hell.

Below the line, people are nasty, cantankerous, rude, and obnoxious, yet believe themselves to be kind, generous, and for some bizarre reason, quite clever and entertaining in an Adam Sandler/American Pie sort of way, I guess. I dunno. I've just never understood the attraction factor of this place, or taken to the people here, which is why I come and go as a guest and never bothered to join as a member. Generally I come here out of boredom, and my two decade long habit of surfing the same folk sites to kill time. Not because there are fabulous people talking about fascinating things. It's a nasty bad habit, is all.

Maybe I'll make a later NY resolution to swear the place off. Maybe not.

Once upon a time, when noone knew Google would come into existence, I was looking for the words of a song I had heard years before (in 1991) in a pub in Ireland (Molly Malone) with a search engine called Altavista.
As I am German and this was on my very first evening in Ireland, I had BIG difficulties understanding the words when I heard the song...

I found them here, read many messages and in April 1998 I posted my first message (under a different nickname than nowadays)

I found out about and started going to FSGW Open Sings in Maryland in June 2000. Since I had a repetoire of about 2 songs I could actually remember the words for, I was delighted when someone at one of my early Open Sings told me about the Mudcat Digitrad search. Seemed much too good to be true! I first used it when my father, at age 86, was going to come to an Open Sing with me, and he wanted the words for his favorite songs, "Frankie and Johnnie" and "ABDUL ABULBUL AMIR". Mudcat obliged. I'm a newbie to computers and the Net. I've had my laptop since spring of last year but didn't have the courage to go on the Net until much later. I admit that I haven't done much "surfing" since the vastness of the Internet is very intimidating.

I don't recall the particular search I launched, but it might have been "traditional music" as I was searching for contents of various songbooks. At first, I wasn't certain what I had found, so I did a bit of exploring. What really captured my interest was finding lyrics that come close to a song my maternal grandfather used to sing. But, his "Davy Crockett" has much more, stanzas that I've been researching for many years with admittedly limited resources. Now that I have the Net, perhaps I can make some headway.

After listening to the poor-quality recording I have from the Seventies, I deciphered most of Daddy Claude's lyrics though, unfortunately, some words are drowned out by background noise.

I've been doing as much reading as I can during each visit to learn more about this site. Bear with me as I make some newbie mistakes. I'm a stranger in the very strange land of the Net.

I noticed on another message that you were having some trouble seeing things on the computer.   Font size on the computer itself can be adjusted by going to Start>Control Panel>Display>Appearance>Font Size and select "larger" or "largest". Unfortunately, that will not affect text size on web sites. For that, click View on your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox), go down to "Text Size" and make a selection.

I may have drifted here before but that was the event that got me trying to read and take an interest here. You always come to mind when I wear the carnelian necklace you made and put in the auction which my sister won AND when I look at and handle the tumbled stones you sent from the beach. I love them. I think I mentioned, Night Owl asks after you every now and then. She and I still have such good memories of late night HearMe sessions with you dazzling us with your talent and ability. The HearMe sessions got her through some awfully dark nights after the house fire and all.

I talk to her almost every day. She's caring for her very live-wired 100 year old mother and pitching in for her 98 yr old aunt, too!

I love them, but I think carnelian is still my fav. though amethyst and malachite AND lapis are also right up there. I love the combo of amber, turquoise, and amethyst.

Sorry for the drift, folks. It's old home week at the Mudcat.:-)

Well my last post is not strictly true... I joined properly in May 2008 because of EssexGirl. But I have wandered in before under guest poetspider looking for lyrics and earliest visit was in 1998 or 99 when AllanC who worked at the same community college invited me to check out a recording of him on Mudcat radio. That is going way way back.

So does that make me Mudcat old timer?

A local performer who became a Facebook Friend would post information about others. One time I asked her how she knew who had passed away before I'd heard it from other sources. She said, "Mudcat." I had to find out what that was. For a while I just dropped in occasionally to read posts. Then I felt compelled to comment on a few threads, so I became GUEST, Janet. Finally I realized I was totally hooked, but when I tried to become a member there was a technical problem. A few weeks later I saw that Joe had created an alternate way to register, so I did.

I had heard someone mention about Mudcats a while back but didn't venture because I didn't think I knew enough about folk apart from the things I had always liked to take a look. Then a few months ago I came across it (at work) when looking for something more to do with Folk Rock really I was looking to see what Lindisfarne was doing now. Anyway I saw Mudcats and clicked on and was surprised to see that it wasn't 'firewalled' hey hey. The funny thing is although I don't know anyone physically I imagine what everyone looks like and I am getting to know the personalities of different people which is also interesting.

Now I can't remember whether it was Willie-O or people from Greenbank (ON) folk/blues jams or from The Woods that first pointed me to Mudcat. All were an active part of my life around the same couple of years when I was getting back into playing after a hiatus due to an exhausting day job. Though I don't post consistently, it's been my home page for at least a decade.

Mymymy, how'd I miss this thread all these years? It all started (mumble) years ago when I was just starting to play around on the 'net. I stumbled on Mike Harding's Green Man site, so naturally I searched for the Folk Legacy website to let them know about it. (The Folk Legacy folks are old friends.) Sandy emailed back and said "You should get on the Mudcat. We need you." That silver-tongued devil. He knew exactly the right thing to say to a librarian. I was a bit leery of forums and suchlike, knowing that when a group of people gather to talk about just one thing, pomposity, power plays, and group politics raise their ugly heads. I thought I'd just lurk for a while, and on my first visit I found myself answering a question and becoming a regular. the fact that I already knew some of the members in the flesh helped.
