He interviewed John Sayles about his new indie film "Silver City", which premiered in Colorado this weekend, for his opening program. He also recently appeared with Dan Bern and others at the anti-RNC Artists Network of Refuse & Resist!'s "Unconventional Heroes" concert, and was keynote speaker no less at the 2nd Annual Howl Festival honoring Alan Ginsburg. And the man also has feature articles about him: in Mother Jones, titled "Regime Change Rock", and in Rolling Stone, titled "Country Radical". A busy guy. I had great expectations from what I read in the papers, but when I finally got my hands on the CD I felt tricked. Maybe it's my own fault, not understanding what it takes to make a revolution in the US, but the lyrics on "The Revolution Starts.. Now" didn't start anything for me. I am sorry. Steve Earle has written the most wonderful, thoughtful and sophisticated material over a decade, but I didn't fancy this last one. That's the way it is, some like it and some not. I wonder what makes the difference? Steve Earle has been one of my favourites for years, but I was not stunned by his last record. Anyway; I hope those who love this record will continue to love it and I hope SE will provide us all with his good music in the years to come. |
