Julie Ellison News for Sept/Oct

15 Sep 04 - 05:51 PM (#1272842)
Subject: Julie Ellison News for Sept/Oct
From: GUEST,Cittern

First of all apologies for anyone trying to communicate via the wonders of the web/email with myself or Julie recently - we have had a series of computer failures which have made life difficult. We have certainly lost a handful of emails and some demos promised to promoters have been delayed. If you think we have forgotten you please get in touch.

Our mechanical/electronic chaos even went as far as the hoover breaking down while we were cleaning the inside of one old PC to use as an extra backup !!

First off, some more bad news, due to external "stuff" beyond our control the following two gigs are cancelled:

Sun 19 Sep
The Sun Inn
Beverley

Fri 24 Sep
The Eight Bells Hotel
Hawkhurst

But ... now the good news:

Autumn is set to be an exciting and busy time, including lots of gigs. Here's the next "batch" in Sept/Oct, part of a 28 date Autumn tour including both "Pub Crawl" and "In Concert" performances:

Saturday 25 September
The Old Canal Inn
Portsmouth

Sunday 26 September
The Neptune Bar
Brighton

Monday 27 September
The Barge
Gillingham

Thursday 30 September
The King's Head Hotel
Rochester

Friday 1 October
The Brent Brief
Southampton

Saturday 2 October
Tenterden Folk Festival
(Including lunchtime concert with Sara Grey, Alison Williams-Bailey and Eileen Masterson, a Guitar workshop and an evening concert.)

Sunday 3 October
The Smugglers
Hastings

Monday 4 October
The Orange Bar
Ashford

Thursday 7 October
The Fishpond
Matlock Bath

Monday 11 October
Tap 'n' Spile
Hull

Saturday 16 October
Gainsborough Folk Festival
(Including guitar workshop and performance in the main evening concert.)

And there are lots more after that too. Please check the website for details at http://www.julieellison.co.uk/gigs.php

Local radio and press have been very helpful recently. For example Julie got a fantastic review of the Arundel Festival gig which we've been told appeared in the Chichester Observer and West Sussex County Times... Getting hold of copies of such press articles, which are usually gig reviews or previews, can be tricky for us (not living locally to most of them), so if you see anything about Julie in your local papers we'd be really grateful if you could either let
us know or send us a copy.

We're also seeking help from anyone who might be able to display tour posters at work, school, local libraries etc or maybe distribute some fliers in your local folk clubs. We have some new tour poster designs so we'd like as many people to see them as possible. Just let us know how many copies you need and an address for us to
post them to.

Best regards

Sooz - thanks for widening my smile today - another radio programme on the list - fantastic - and without the normal 300 phone calls to hassle people to take the wrapping off !!

"Soutbound" does seem to be popular on radio.

Is there a website we can link to ? We are updating the website shortly to update the links to radio programmes that are/have featured the album.

I hope you got to play something off your own CD as well?

Well spotted WeeLittleDrummer - I didn't feel I could pick you up on the name change on your last posting - which I seem to remember was in the early hours !

I'm also looking forward to the GMR session as well (I think it includes a performance as well - is that right Ali?).

And to the reason for dropping in today .....

Julie's debut solo CD "At Last" is now available in the Borders Bookshop in Leeds.

Here are some recent quotes about the album:

"Her song writing is imaginative and genuine and the delivery heartfelt."
- Around Kent Folk

"This is a superbly classy CD, and you owe it to yourself to hear Julie at the earliest opportunity."
- NetRhythmns.co.uk

"If there is a better female guitarist in the country, I'm not aware of her. Magic!"
- The Folk Mag

Samples from every track are available at:

Organisers and promoters should also note that we are now booking the Spring and Autumn 2005 tours. To receive a demo and press pack please contact John@Acoustyistics.co.uk or call 01709 881339.

All the best

Ah the joys of dealing with pub landlords (I can't wait until we only do arts centres) ......

Tomorrow nights gig at the The Old Canal Inn in Milton, Portsmouth is now cancelled.

Rest of the tour unaffected.

On a more positive note, we have been told that a copy of "At Last" is now in the hands of Mr Mike Harding. We would be grateful for messages urging him to play it on his show, which should be sent to:

mike.harding@bbc.co.uk

Many thanks.

I unfortunately missed Julie at Tenterden last weekend, including her concert with Sara Grey, Alison Williams-Bailey and Eileen – busy on other duties, but was so glad we caught her last night at Oranges in Ashford. She did an absolutely brilliant set – wonderful guitar work. All you West Kent folkies – get along to Friday Folk, Orpington on 29 October. You won't be disappointed.

Many thanks, Julie. It was a long drive from Ashford, hope you got home safely.

Dave & Eileen.

Thanks for the message Dave - glad you made it to Oranges. Yes she got home safely and for once didn't wake me up until a reasonable hour!

I will make sure Julie sees the posting.

And now ...

Three more bits of news:

1/ Tour date update
2/ New retail outlet for "At Last"
3/ New review and new (and influential) endorsement

1/ Tour date update

The gig scheduled for The Pier Hotel in Morecambe on Friday 22nd October has been postponed to 2005.

2/ New retail outlet for "At Last"

Julie's solo CD "At Last" is now available via the HTD Music & Video Store, Bexleyheath.

Call 0208 301 2828 or email htdrecords@aol.com for details.

3/ New review and new (and influential) endorsement

The latest review of "At Last" has appeared at www.Rambles.net. A couple of quotes give a flavour of the review:

"Julie Ellison is recognised as a virtuoso on guitar, but she is a mean singer as well."

"Julie Ellison is a voice/writer/player to watch. She could veer in any direction and become a major name."

The full review can be accessed via the "What's New" page at www.Rambles.net.

Finally we were delighted to receive an email from Ralph McTell recently, with permission to use the following quote:

"Julie is a terrific guitar player and she also writes great songs. She shared
the stage with me at the South Shields guitar festival and the discerning
audience loved her. She stormed it!"

- Ralph McTell

To say that quote will help Julie gain wider recognition would be an understatement! Thanks Ralph.

Hi John,
In a thread marked 'JE News for Sept/Oct' you'd expect to reach the end of Oct wouldn'cha?
I'd like to add Julie is playing a benefit for Amnesty International on Sat 30th Oct at the
Courthouse Arts Centre, Otley, West Yorkshire (There! That's an Arts Centre gig such as you hanker after innit?).
Also appearing that night are Dave Vermond and the Duncan McFarlane Band (acoustic).
Worthy cause, good bill - get there!

First of all, thanks to the Hull 'catters who came to the Tap n Spile gig last night - your support was appreciated and the CD sales mean we can now afford the diesel to get to Gainsborough Folk Festival this coming weekend ;-)

Woodchip - I've started posting the gigs in smaller lists, otherwise the posting disappears off the home page too soon - there is a mighty amount of traffic on this site!

GUEST,nickr90 - thanks for posting the direct link to the "Rambles.net" review.

Ali - Happy Birthday from us too. Looking forward to meeting you again next week.

And now, a word from our sponsors:

We have noticed that more people are now travelling significant distances to see Julie.

At The Fishpond gig (Matlock Bath) we even had some visitors from North Wales! At the same gig some people who live in Matlock said they had intended going to the (now postponed) gig in Morecambe but, since this is now cancelled, they will be coming to the Tap and Spile gig in Lincoln in November instead.

Obviously we are both delighted that people are willing to travel to see Julie, and we will continue publishing tour dates as far in advance as we can. However, please note that the pub gigs are especially prone to be re-scheduled at short notice (publicans have perfectly understandable business pressures which we have to allow for in our contracts) but we would feel terrible if someone travelled a long distance to a cancelled gig. If anyone wishes to check the status of a gig before travelling, please do not hesitate to call me on 07981 984 760 first. We also update the gig guide on Julie's website as soon as we can - although sometimes there are delays if we are in the middle of a tour.

Great night at Otley last night. Thanks to Judith and all the organisers for a great Ceilidh - which even got me up on the floor - a really humorous set from Dave Vermond and a peformance from the Dunc McF Band (Acoustic) up to the usual standards.   'Er indoors did all right as well I reckon - I was pleased to see Steve Earl's "Billy Austin" back on the set list. A fitting end to an Amnesty night.

And a big thank you to Rob on the sound desk who did a great job.

Hope to see some of you at the Topic FC in Bradford on Thursday.
