From: Rasener

Another excellent night in store, so don't be the one to miss out :-)

This week we have two guest spotlights and very good they are too.

Mick Pearce and Duncan McFarlane

They are supported by 4 very good acts.

John Blanks, Stitherum, Jane Kitchen & Ernie Geddes, Rhiannon Pearce

Walesby Village Hall
Otby Lane
Walesby
N'r Market Rasen
Lincolnshire

There is a small car park and sensible parking in the lanes around the hall is fine. Please don't park in peoples driveway's or on grass verges.

Entrance £2

Doors open 7:45pm
Music 8:15pm to 11:30pm

There is a bar in the hall. Please note that bringing & consuming your own drinks on the premises is not allowed, unless you have OK'd it with the bartender on the evening.

The hall is family and disability friendly.

No smoking in the hall.

See you all there hopefully.

Don't know Rhiannon and don't know Mick and Duncan but it will be worth coming to see the others, so they will be a bonus for me whatever. Knowing you Les, they will be excellent....Best wishes, Mike.

Know everyone except Duncan - looking forward to hearing him for the first time. He'll have to be good to better Mick Pearce's "Thirteen Florins on the Bar" though!

Thanks for that Sooz! I'm looking forward to Friday and to seeing Duncan myself - all reports I've heard say he'll easily put me to shame.

GS - you saw me on Saturday at Carol's sing; I was the one playing the big Lowden and compering the evening session with Rhiannon who was sat beside me.

See you on Friday.

Mick

Saw Duncan (plus band) at Cleckheaton in July - very good music and musicianship. A bit Jez Lowe-ish (but there's only one of those!).

See you there,

For those who don't know him already, Duncan is a very fine fellow and very highly recommended. He's a superb guitarist, writes some great songs and does some really interesting takes on trad stuff as well. And he's a really nice bloke. You'll enjoy, I'm sure.

Bit worried about Mick and Rhiannon.

They have this ferocious Lion living with them. It loves finger tips and old smelly clothing and sandals.

So I don't know what to expect when they arrive :-)

As for Duncan, well just wait and see!!!!!!!!

No wonder they cost £57 each.

Are Oakleys whelks bigger than Colin Thompsons ?

They check each other for size, but it's always done in private.

I see that Barton (Lincs) are holding a welk eating birthday party for Colin Thompson tonight, and the welks are free - that should get a few people in. :-)

ask Mick to do 'Joshua gone Barbados'

Didnt Graeme do Mike Spark's song '13 Florins' at G'sb?

Mike Sparks puts on a good evening too!!

All these 'names' hail from the Herga Folk Club as do Johnny Collins and George Papavgeris.

and they've all played St Albans.

Duncan is appearing in October. As is MCP.

You wanted to know all that didnt you?

Ask Mick to do 'Eldorado' and also ' Anderson's Coast' so that you can learn the chorus for later in October, just in case.

Breezy, you say 'Ask Mick to do.....Anderson's Coast'
I'll be leaving that one out of my set then.
It's on my solo CD from 2001 - and went well when I did it with Margaret Walters at Alcester Fest, Oxford & Nottingham FCs earlier this year.
Did you know her maternal grandfather was one Duncan McFarlane - a pioneer photographer from Glasgow? (All my family are from Ayrshire) You'd know idea I was THAT old did you!!!
By the way Breezy m'boy - would you kindly resend an address for me to pop posters off to for Oct at St Alb's. Ta - Duncan

Ooops! NO idea - not KNOW idea.
...and I opened this up this aft to find John's comment there. John's been kind enough to be complementary before, bless him. So I don't reckon he's that bothered if I'm 'monitoring' or not.
He just speaks his mind - usually mentions Julie Ellison though (with whom I had the pleasure of sharing a gig at Holmfirth Fest in 02)
I just said yes to appearing at an Amnesty Fundraiser on October 30th with her (and others) - in Otley at the new Courthouse Arts Centre. Might get a chance to meet Mr R properly over a brew there then. Love - Duncan

Och John, I fully understand lad. When I put that bit in ('usually mentions Julie Ellison though')- it was just me setting you up to get a free plug in - knowing full well she has a benefit gig coming up for Amnesty International (not only in my patch, but one that I'm on at too - with my acoustic band).
That 'ultimate fusion concert' you mention sounds a good idea - ok, who's gonna set it up?

Now, it hasn't escaped my limited Pooh-bear-brain that each wee exchange here whips the thread back up to the top for a wee while longer - which no doubt raises the Market Rasen gig awareness-factor.

Shameless pluggery for all concerned? Aye, but even if just one extra bod that reads it here walks into ANY folk club, likes it, may be goes again, that's a result for the general good, surely?

A very good evening indeed. My personal contribution was a struggle against my personal demons, and the less said the better, but everyone else - wow! Paul & Lucy, Stitherum (a.k.a. Sooz & GUEST: Mr. Sooz) were well up to their usual high standard and, IMNSHO, it was a delight to hear Jane Kitchen solo doing the stuff she's best at (don't fret about the wayward tuning lass, happened to me too - I put it down to cold wood versus warm body (that's my excuse anyway)! LOL!).

Duncan McFarlane was a revelation - a one-man folk-rock band if ever there was one - and Mick Pearce was, well he was Mick Pearce (and those who've heard him know exactly what I mean!). Two great sets from two very nice and highly talented guys.

Bring on the next lot Les - can't wait!
