Tech: Using Mozilla

After losing my patience with OE, I made Mozilla my default browser and Firefox my e mail server, I am unable to access my e mail through Firefox. No icon on the tool bar. Any suggestions?

it's 'probably' just one setting or name typed wrong, Kendall...take a look again at the addresses and names you told it.

(those little 'smtp' and 'pop' names have to be just right)

It is very well liked by most....

I have used their Thunderbird email program for over a year, now, Kendall, and really like it. Easy to use and separate from the browser, Mozilla, which I really love, too! You might want to give it a try.

oh...no, wait...Firefox is not an email program...it is only a browser. Thunderbird is the stand-alone email program from the Mozilla project! Mozilla WILL do email as well as be a browser, so we need to know exactly what you are looking at...or is just a name confusion?

(I lost track of names because a couple of Mozilla programs have changed names....but Mozilla itself, the browser, will also do email.)

Some people like the programs to be separate, and have Firefox as browser, and Thunderbird just for email.

Thunderbird needs to be downloaded separately from the Firefox browser.    I've just made the switch from Micro$oft and really like both the Mozilla programmes a lot. The layouts are similar, very intuitive, and won't give you learning-curve headaches.

To clarify the Mozilla family of tools:

Firefox: fast, secure and lightweight web browser (no email except webmail)

Thunderbird: fast, secure, spam-safe and lightweight email reader (no web browser, but displays HTML emails fine)

Mozilla: browser, email, HTML composer, newsreader, IRC client - does it all at some expense in size and performance. Security is pretty good.

Over at Microsoft we have:

Internet Explorer: insecure, spyware/popup friendly, slow, non-standard, big, buggy web browser
Outlook Express: insecure, spam friendly, big, buggy email reader

Is it any wonder that smart internet citizens are voting with their feet for the open-source tools?

i use firefox browser now, but have found several times today that i needed to configure a program to accept a browser, and was only given 3 choioces : Netscape, IE and AOL--i did not know aol actually was a browser--i thought it was (inextricably) linked to Internet Exploder..
any way so i could not tell the other program to use firefox to access the web....but i do like it other than that it is not universally recognized by other programs.

For some time I have wondered how the various things get hooked in - probably via the Registry - so there must be a way to add a key to the Registry. I wish I knew where to look and how to add the things.

Foolestroupe, have a trawl through John In Kansas' posts (or write him a friendly PM?) because he seems to really know his way around the innards of a puter and is very generous with helpful advice. He's written a lot of it already so perhaps you may find what you're looking for in one of the related threads. It's certainly a good point to raise - I haven't encountered that problem yet but inevitably will, I'm sure.

I now have both Mozilla and Firefox, but I wish they were integrated as IE and OE are. They seem to work well enough, but I have to shift back and forth as there is no e mail icon on Mozilla.
Oh well, can't have everything...where would you put it?

Subject: RE: Tech: Using Mozilla

Kendall...see if your Mozilla is like mine. Look at the top where it says "view"...menu should have a list with first item being "show-hide".....under that are a list of various toolbars. One of those is "component bar"....when I check that, it puts a bar at the bottom with icons. One of those is mail.

Or, you can click up top on the item that says "window" and click mail & newsgroups under there...or just hit the 'ctrl' key and the 2 key at the same time.

The idea is, people have different idea of how they want things to work, so they give you a choice.....

but do you really mean you have Mozilla AND Firefox? Those are 2 browsers, one with eamil and one without,...or did you get Thunderbird?

ahh..well, do you have the password working anywhere else? Can you re-enter it, being sure it is the right case? There are several silly things one can do wrong...I know...I have done them all! *grin*

If ALL else fails, you can call ISP and get the password changed.

I just switched to Mozilla Firefox for my browser, and I now wonder why the heck I waited so long!! It's twice as fast as Internet Explorer which had become utterly sluggish this past week for no good reason.

But does anyone know how I can get rid of these "Messenger Service" pop   ups? I was hoping that Mozilla would stop them, but I'm looking at one even as I type this! They are so annoying because they appear to be a warning from the computer server until you notice the website in small letters at the bottom. I can easily just close them, but I would rather figure out if there's a way to prevent them entirely. Anyone know what I'm talking about and have an idea for me?? Thanks!

not something I've ever seen, are they spyware or adware (she says, throwing in computer terms to sound educated). If they are, one of the programs that get rid of them might help.

I don't know what your "messenger service" thing is, but if it's something that has infiltrated your computer because of using IE, it's still there.

I'd certainly recommend switching from IE to Firefox, but it's also a good time (if you haven't done so already) to install and run, at least once, AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. They are both free, effective and harmless (i.e. they don't install spyware of their own like some....) and they get rid of a lot of stuff that you don't want in there.

Having said that, I have a feeling that the "Messenger service" thingy is another Microsoft almost-good-idea-gone-wrong, and the cure is to tweak your windows firewall to block it, as it was only ever intended for local networks. Oh yes - Here you are - a quick Google search revealed what you need!

Ellenpoly, go to "Start" (the button in the Task bar), "Settings", "Control Panel", "Services" (might be hidden in "Administrative Tools" depending on OS).

Search for "Messenger", right-click on it, select "Properties", under "Startup Type" select "disabled".
If the "Service Status" is not "Stopped", click on the "Stop" button to stop the service immediately (otherwise it will run till you re-boot your machine).

oh...by the way!...you have not BEGUN to enjoy Firefox until you gradually enhance it with various 'extensions'. You can block ads, enhance downloading tricks, add new toolbars, put weather information in your browser, have 'tabbed' browsing (many windows open in one browser), be able to save your browser sessions, so that when you re-open, it is just as you left it..(right at the Mudcat thread you were reading when the phone rang!)...lots more...

go here and be amazed.

Do read about them a bit first, as there are way more than any one person will ever need.

here is a search of Google groups I read the alt.comp.freeware group everyday

they REALLY are easy to install..

Ah, but I've just be having a NEW problem! Sometimes, and for no apparent reason, I'll try to access a website, and I'll get an "ALERT" box which says that the website address is wrong, and I should try again. But I KNOW the site is right (I mean, it's happens with Yahoo, which is a site I go to daily) but it just won't go to it.

I then went back to IE just to see, and I could access the Yahoo site with no problem. So it's something to do with Mozilla, yes?

I have had the same trouble accessing Mudcat, and Google, so it's not just the Yahoo site.

Come on, guys...you've talked me into this nifty new browser...now you've got to teach me how to stop this from happening...PLEASE!!

Subject: RE: Tech: Using Mozilla

hmmm,...I don't think I have seen that one.

well...Yahoo has special considerations, since it has many, many places that require passwords, cookies...etc. Mozilla/Firefox has some built-in filters to help you avoid bad stuff, so 'perhaps' the site needs settings adjusted?

it can be important to know the exact wording of the 'alert' and the type of site involved. Is it a Yahoo 'group' which requires a log-in or something you haven't told Firefox about yet?

PM me details, if it is approptiate, and I'll try it from here.

In your settings, you have checked the box that lets you accept cookies, haven't you?

I just loaded and been using Mozilla (yes, Mozilla, not Firefox, cuz I'm on Mac OS9.2) after my Exploder, I mean Exploiter, aw you know -- refused to open no matter how many re-installs and memory allocations, etcet etcet ad nauseum and I installed Netscape and found it unbearably cludgy, annoying and worst yet, wouldn't let me get to the Employment Security weekly sign-in page.

Found (thanks to mack/misophist) an OS9-compatible version of Mozilla and LOVE it.

A minor cursor accuracy problem, but I can live with that. And it gets Microsloth out of my day-to-day life to boot!

Ellenpoly, could you give us the exact address of the website that gives an alert in Mozilla? (if you don't want to have it public, send me another PM).
It would also help to have the exact text of the alert.

For some sites you MUST - use IE (some government services.) For those locations switch over.

An interesting statistic for Pene to post in this thread would be the data-logs for brand of browsers accessing Mudcat in January 2005, 4, 3, 2, 1 and 00.

I've used Firefox for a few weeks now and think it's great, particularly the tabbed browsing. Sometimes websites I've never had any trouble with come up in strange shapes, though - writing and pictures overlapping, stuff like that. I suppose it's due to the websites not being programmed exactly to agreed standards, because Firefox is said to be more particular in that respect that Netscape or the dreaded IE. The one thing I find irksome is that you can't switch off Graphics and then press a button to get those for a particular page, as in Netscape. (You can for individual pictures, but they shows up on their own, not within the page.)

Thunderbird isn't bad either, but is still giving me a few problems, such as the big writing they use for the headings/folders which I haven't managed to reduce to something handier, or the fact that you can't (seemingly) put an eMail in 'Unsent Messages' and then call it up again to add something, like you can in Netscape. Also, I've tried twice to download their calendar but only get pages of jumbled letters, though some kind of download clearly takes place. What am I doing wrong?

Clearly, 2005 is a year for learning ... Happy New Year to you all!

If you really really want to kick the hacker spyware loser in the face then you should get and boot up with the Knoppix CD in your computer.

It automaticaly detects internet, it cannot be hacked or spied on because it runs off the CD and you can still do all yer email, webforums etc etc as usual.

I'd say both MS and hacker/spy .inc are about to be very unemployed..

BTW Knoppix is free to download, basic hardware = >350 Mgz CPU and >128 Meg ram, CD and floppy, VGA monitor.

Susanne -Save unfinished emails as Draft, then click on red circely thingy to remove message from the screen & open it again at your leisure.

Can't help with your other enquiry, as I'm only on my training wheels - maybe you can find something in HELP, which I've barely glanced at. I'm just waiting for my very own personal Help-desk to get back from a festival to get instructions so I can load the CD-Rom that contains the contents of the hard-disk of my dead computer so I can do more than just read a few websites & answer mail.

I've only got a minute here at the library computer, and won't be online on my own computer until tomorrow. I'll check to see whether I allowed the cookies through first, and if that clears up the problem, then I won't bother you, Mudguard. If not, then I'll send you more info. I'm still trying to work out the kinks of getting online, since my ISP directs me to IE, and then I have to open Mozilla afterwards on a new Window. I'm sure there's a way around this as well, but I just need to fiddle with it all a bit tomorrow, and I'll report back,
Thanks again, especially to Bill and Mudguard for your help!

Susanne, "Unsent" is AFAIK for messages on which you clicked the "Send" button but which could not be sent (no connection to SMTP server or such stuff).
For messages you want to prepare but not yet send there is (as has been mentioned by Sandra) the Drafts folder.
I never had "big" headers/foldernames - so I can't help there. View - Text Size only influences the text size of the message itself ...
Which version of Thunderbird do you use, Susanne?

"... my ISP directs me to IE, and then I have to open Mozilla afterwards on a new Window."

not sure what this means...if it means that IE is set as your 'default' browser, and you'd rather just have Mozilla come up when you click a link or something, yes....there are ways around that.

Lets us know when you are back at your machine.
