Well, there's us in Ottawa, at the very end of the Rideau Canal. We will be getting back from the Getaway on the 18th. I mentioned in another thread a couple of the musical venues in the Ottawa area. I know there are a few other Mudcatters, but they may not be following Mudcat all that actively right now.

Our computer at home decided to try to kill itself on the weekend, so we are without E-mail for now, but that should be remedied shortly.

Hey GREG HERE I AM. I live a few miles north of Perth which is the terminus of the Tay Branch, a six-mile spur off of Big Rideau Lake at Port Elmsley. I know Portland well, it's half an hours drive from Perth--why are you going to be there in particular?

In fact I've been angling for a job on the canal and had a week's work on the maintenance crew in spring. All the numerous locks (47) are interesting if you like 19th century engineering, but the season is over by then I think. (Also the personnel have been on a rotating strike the past six weeks). The dam at Jones Falls is said to be particularly amazing--it was the largest dam anywhere in the Commonwealth when it was built around 1830.

PM me, we'll set up a rendezvous, I'll make some time available.

Marion is from Perth but lives in Toronto now...

Bill

Here's Stompin' Tom's history lesson for you Greg. :-}

BIG JOE MUFFERAW

Performed by STOMPIN' TOM CONNERS

E         A               D                      E                      A
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

       A                D
Cho...        Big Joe Mufferaw paddled up the Madawa
        A                           E
All the way from Ottawa in just one day
                A                        D
Hey hey, on the river Ottawa the best man we ever saw
            A                   E          A
Was big Joe Mufferaw the old folks say
                                                 E          A
Come and listen & I'll tell you what the old folks say

A                            D
Well they say big Joe had an old pet frog
A                         E
Bigger than a horse & he barked like a dog
       A                           D
And the only thing quicker than a train upon a track
    E                      D          A
Was Big Joe ridin' on that bull frog's back
E         A               D                      E                      A
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

Well they say Big Joe used to get real wet
From cuttin down timber & working up a sweat
And everyone'll tell ya 'round Carleton Place
The Mississippi dripped off of Big Joe's face
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

Now Joe had to portage from Gatineau down
To see a little girl he had in Kemptville town
Well he was back & forth so many times to see that gal
That the path he wore became the Rideau Canal
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

Cho...

Well they say Big Joe put out a forest fire
Half way between Renfrew & old Arnprior
He was fifty miles away down around Smith Falls
When he drownded out the fire with five spitballs
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

Well he jumped into Calagogie Lake real fast
And he swam both ways to catch a cross eyed bass
But he threw it on the ground & said I can't eat that
And then he covered it over with Mount St. Pat
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

Well they say Big Joe drank a bucket of Gin
Then he beat the living tar out of 29 men
And high on the ceiling of the Pembroke pub
There's 29 bootmarks & they're signed with love
Heave hi heave hi ho the best man in Ottawa was Mufferaw Joe, Mufferaw Joe

Cho...

Nothing to do with musicians, but I remember meeting my brother-in-law along the Rideau at a fishing lodge by a lock where there was also a huge summer hotel. In one part of the manicured grounds there were solid white squirrels, and in another part they were solid black. Strange, but cute. The bass fishing that week was poor, and the night life was nil, but the local cheese curds were fantastic with Labatte's Blue. :-)

Where do you find STompin' Tom Conners?(Either physically or on CD)
And, does anybody know a band called Gopher Baroque?

Stompin' Tom? One of Canada's sons. :-)

Try some of his lyrics. Surely you know the Good Old Hockey Game, eh? :-)

Google has plenty of suggested purchase locations. :-)

Hello Greg,

Are you boating the Rideau system? Nice time of year to be there.
Gopher Baroque are based in Kingston Ont., not too far away from Portland. I'm an ex-sometimes on-alumni of the group. Terry Snider, former fiddler, now plays with Tanglefoot and Joe Grant, former Tanglefoot, now plays occasionally with Gopher Baroque. Now that I think of it it's quite an incestuous little bunch!

And no, we're not boating the Rideau system, unless we manage to run into someone who would like to take a couple of English boatie musicians out for a spin in return for some tunes!
It looks like the trip boat season is just finishing, so we are hoping to run into a congenial fellow boat and folk enthisiast. It normally happens eventually!

Greg :

I live in Kingston, Ontario, the lower (?) end of the Rideau system, where it flows into Lake Ontario. A week ago today, along with a group of seniors from Kingston we took a boat cruise on the Big Rideau Lake out of Portland. I think the cruise is still running and if you have the opportunity, I would highly recommend it. The Fall colours are just at their peak right now, and that in itself is an experience not to be missed.

On the subject of Gopher Baroque, I have known these talented ladies for many years, in fact they got their start playing with the Kingston Ceili Band during the early 80's. They perform some fine folk music, as well as some of their own, mostly folk-style compositions. The ladies are Dawn Callan and Jan Singleton, often augmented with other musicians.

I'm not aware of any musical sessions taking place for the next week or so, but if you're here on the 17th, there is a folk club, Sweet Folk All, takes place at the Epicure Restaurant near Princess and Clergy Sts in Kingston, starting at 7:00 p.m. Some good local folkies, and an open stage.

Enjoy your stay.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, we dont get to Portland till the 18th, we're in Toronto till then, so we wont be near Kingston for the club on the 17th(we're playing the Flying Cloud Folk Club that night in Toronto). If the fall colours are good now, will they still be going strong by the 18th? We dont want to miss anything.
I believe those boat trips are going stop for the winter season before we get there, which is why we're hoping to find a friendly folkie boatie!

Hello Greg,

No, I'm now in Niagara Falls area about an hour from Toronto. Not much of a folky scene around here. Any sessions that I know about are in Toronto I think at Allan's on Danforth and the place next door whose name I can never recall. The folks at the Flying cloud would likely know of anything like that. Have fun.                   Frankie
