I heard it too: and it was hilarious, but not sure who sang it! He was over about 160 degrees from where I sat. Might've been George Graham: he was over that side. I'll ask him when I next see him.

P.S. I just got the tune for a song I asked for the tune for over 2 years ago, so don't give up!

Well, you might give us a line or two of a verse to work on.

That was the title: I'd never heard it before either. It was about someone from the South Pacific apologising that in bygone days cannibalism was the order of the day on this particular island, so "your Grandpa" got eaten. I can only remember lines about him being tough and undercooked, and went well with a naughty little wine sauce!

Reminds me of a story heard in Fiji. In the early tourist days, a native family opened a small inn. An old relative would come round, cadging drinks from the guests and entertaining them with graphically told tales of his cannibal days. He would be shooed off, only to return again.

Looking forward to the words!

The song went something like -

I'm sorry for eating your grandpa
I din't mean to cause you such alarm
I'm sorry for eating your grandpa
If I knew i'd cause offence
I'd have only eaten an arm

can you remember any more -

Somewhere in this song should be the line:

Your grandpa was a man of good taste...

Makes me wonder what can of condolence card one sends out to the surviving relatives of grandpa eaten by cannibals.

From the cannibals:

Sorry for your loss. Would you like to attend a memorial dinner?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

What's the highlight of a cannibal wedding?

Toasting the happy couple!

Didja hear about the cannibal who ate a priest, a rabbi, and methodist missionary? He had an ecumenical movement..

Groan!

There, someone needed to do that.

Didja hear about the cannibal who ate George W. Bush? He's not worried about constipation anymore!

Still trying to get this: it wasn't George who sang it so no further on with the words. The background story to this is on BBC NEWS/ASIA-PACIFIC for 14.10.03.

Hi Guys,
Just stumbled upon this thread today and am amazed that you know the song. I wrote it a lot of years ago but have never recorded it. It's based on a true news story which you can Google. I will put something up on YouTube but, in the meantime, here are the words and chords.

C
I'm sorry I ate your grampa
   F                     C
I didnae mean nae herm
     F                                C
If I thought you'd take it badly
               G
I'd have only ta'en an airm

I'm sorry I ate your grampa
He wis a lovely man
In a plate o' minestrone
Wi' a wee bit parmesan

I wis minding my ain business
When a minister cycled by
He wis thinking on the almighty
I wis thinking on a pie
I jumped oot o' the jungle
He gave oot such awfi squeals
He thought I was the devil
I thought he was meals on wheels

Well I really liked yir grampa
He was fair but he wis tough
I'm no saying that that wis his fault
He jist wisnae cooked enough
I put him in a big pot
Dangled it above a fire
But I widnae have gone and boiled him
If I'd known he was a friar

Jist tae show there's nae hard feelings
Here's a hand o' mine
Gently simmered wi some onions
And a cheeky wee white wine
And if ye've room for any afters
I've the thing that'll dae the trick
Ye can hiv some cheese and crackers
Or a plate of spotted dick

Frankrae-

Good things come to them that waits!

Thanks! I think you should be awarded both ears and "a spotted dick."

And what would be the appropriate credit for the lyrics?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I think this is a version of the episode in 2003 that probably lies behind this - Fiji descendants apologize for cannibalism - But that"illagers in a remote Fijian community staged an elaborate ceremony of apology Thursday for descendants of a British missionary killed and eaten 136 years ago."

I seem to remember a Mudcat thread about it, and maybe a Song Challenge.

Anyway, that's a great song there from Frank Rae.   Looking forward to the YouTube version. Welcome to the Mudcat!!!

I note that I've already contributed some outrageous puns in this thread above but maybe it bears repeating that the cannibals were alleged to have said "Your grampa was a man of most excellent taste."

1st Cannibal: Watcha doin'?
2nd Cannibal: Havin' a ball.

There's a lot of soft drink drunk in cannibal country, 'cause they know that things go better with Coke.

Love the song....

I am intrigued how a song I have never recorded has travelled and would be grateful if you could tell me where and when you heard it and who sang it. Will do the youtube thing soon. You can hear some other songs (although not funny ones) on my band's my space sight (rudeigin2). I will, however, be recording an album of just my funny songs very soon. Will keep you posted.

I heard a friend sing this at Balerno Folk Club last night, which prompted me to come back to the thread and look again for the words! Thanks for posting them, Frank.
I never realised it was Frank Rae who had written it or I could have got them off him a while back.
The Eyemouth Festival was one of the earlier Both Sides the Tweed festival, and I later (next year) saw the same chap sing it at Stonehaven Folk Festival in the Chorus Cup competition, which he won. Don't know his name: dark hair and thick black-rimmed glasses. Don't know if that will ring any bells with Frank.

Well, I did eventually get the tune and the lyrics and learned it.
Sang it in the Sidmouth fringe event: "Doom, gloom and despondency" competition, and won! Part of the competiotin includes ejecting people from the room for laughing, fo which the singer gets extra points. Half the people in the room were ejected!
I know Frank, and told him afterwards: he was delighted!

Heard it yesterday at the session at the George and Abbotsford in Melrose. Didn't know the singer. He thought the island in question was Erromanga.

It was one of the Fijian island group. Last time I looked, you could still read the story on BBC World News. McGrath's link above no longer works.
