I work in The Irish Village in Dubai and I keep getting asked for a song called Grace. I can find the lyrics but I can't find the tune on winmx or anything like that. Does anyone have the dots or some means for me to get a hold of the melody? Amazed to find my sister Anne contributing here...Thanks for the lyrics for High Dunne, I had lost a verse so I can put it in the act now!!!!The words were a little different from the way my brother did it in the Livingstones but not much. ps If anyone has copies of their 2 albums I would be greatly interested!

This is an incredible song, IMHO. There is a wealth of info about in the data base from the nemerous chats that have gone on about it. Just plug in the title in the search box up top and while away a few hours.

Hi, Bill-
My usual place for buying sheet music online is Sheet Music Plus, and they didn't have the song.

I think the song is in a number of songbooks published by Walton's (Dublin) - I found it in Volume 2 of a 4-paperback set called Pat Conway Presents the Very Best Irish Songs and Ballads. I think I'm the one who transcribed our MIDI, and I believe I got it from that Walton's book.

Click to play (right-click to download)

There are many software programs that you can use to convert the MIDI to notation. If you have trouble, contact me by e-mail.

I have a midi-karaoke file of this song playable with the free VanBasco program as well as an MP3 sung by Tony Kenney. If you PM me with your e-mail address I can send you either one or both free of charge.

Grace was more than the romantic image portrayed by the song. She helped her widowed sister Muriel (wife of Tomás MacDonagh) after their husbands were executed - Muriel was left with two young children, three-year-old Donagh, the future poet, and one-year-old Barbara - and when Donagh broke his back and became very ill, Grace was a staunch help.

Then when Muriel had a heart attack while swimming the next year, Grace and her sister Nellie (who had been 'out' in the College of Surgeons as a sergeant in the Citizen Army in 1916) took care of the children until family disputes had them snatched from them.

And when Grace discovered the children again some years later, she made sure that they were sent to good schools, and did her best to keep loving contact with them.

She also had interesting literary and artistic contacts - search in various online indices for 'Grace Gifford' and 'Grace Plunkett' and she comes up in surprising contexts.
