From: Bassic Now I have broadband and sound on my PC I want to share tracks from CD`s with my friends via the internet. How do I do it please? I have tried selecting a track and sending it as a file via msn and via email as an extension but it just seems to send an empty file and not "read" the information from the CD drive in my pc. What am I doing wrong? I know there must be a simple answer to this, and several very complicated ones as well I would imagine! Have tried a search on Mudcat but guess I am asking the wrong question. :-( |

Learn how to 'rip' cds to MP3s... then find a good FTP program, and learn how to use that... then teach your friends how to do it... and us IT to share your files... Alternatively, once you've learned how to rip MP3s, get a gmail account (1 gig of space for free) and invite your friends to get accounts as well.. use those accounts to email MP3s back and forth... |

Not my music (copyright protected stuff by others), but I'm not seeking to make a profit off of it. So it that legal? I've never followed the U.S. legislation on file sharing, but it's mentioned in the news every once in a while. Any advice? |

From: Peace If it is copyright protected stuff by others, then you have no business or right to be sharing their work with anyone unless you have their permission in writing. Maybe you aren't seeking to make a profit, but your largess with their work could result in a loss of income to them, and that is why you'll get nailed to the barn door if you are caught. |

This issue has been around ever since people made tapes of LPs. Sometimes it actually helps an artist, sometimes it is a way to cheat him. Ultimately, you must decide whether this 'technically' breaking of the law is serious or not....like jaywalking or eating a grape at Safeway. |

From: M.Ted The copyright on recordings in the UK is fifty years, meaning that recordings from before 1957 are in the public domain and, presumably could be shared on the internet. Without being called a thief. But this is only true across the pond--here in the US, you would still be a horrible criminal--and, one supposes, would deserve all the financial devastation that the Saints-among-us who run the music industry can impose. |
