Lyr Req: Drunken Hiccups (Hobart Smith)

From: GUEST,Jay Stellars

Hey all. I came across some old recordings of Hobart Smith, played them for my band, and we unanimously decided to add a couple to our repertoire. Problem is, we can't decipher the lyrics or find them anywhere online.

So, anyone know the lyrics to "Drunken Hiccups" and "Hawkins County Jail?" We figured out most of "D.H." But "H.C.J." is really giving us trouble.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From notes to Hobart Smith: Blue Ridge Legacy (Rounder):

DRUNKEN HICCUPS

Jack of diamonds, jack of diamonds,
I know you of old.
You robbed my old pockets,
Of silver and gold.

Chorus:
Hiccup! O Lordy, how bad I do feel,
Hiccup! O Lordy, how bad I do feel.

You robbed my old pockets,
You picked my old purse,
You made my old clothes,
Look worse and worse.

Chorus:
I'll drink and I'll gamble,
My money's my own.
It's nobody's business,
How much I do owe.

HAWKINS COUNTY JAIL

When I was sleepin' I dreamt a pleasant dream,
Dreamed I was a-strollin' all down the golden streets.
Woke so brokenhearted in Hawkins County Jail,
All my friends was standin' 'round, no one to go my bail.

Yonder come Luler, ten dollars in her hand,
Keys in her hand, went shovin' through the lock,
"Cheer up, cheer up my prisoner," I thought I heerd them say,
"Send you 'round the White House, seven long years to stay."

[Repeat first stanza, repeat second stanza.]

Perfect!
Thanks so much. I and the Richmond Hill Billies appreciate it.
Come and see us play if you're in New York. We play various spots in Greenwich Village and SoHo, and sometimes in Queens.

Jay - You might also want to listen to fiddler/banjoist Tommy Jarell's fine version of "Drunken Hiccups" - he has a few different verses than the ones above.

Sorry I can't type them here - they're at home.
