07 Nov 04 - 10:35 AM (#1319548) Subject: Lyr Add: Jack O'Diamonds-variation from Lomax's From: katlaughing In checking over some lyrics which George kindly listed in my Found Musical Treasures thread, I find the old 78 I have of Jack O'Diamonds has completely different lyrics to any of the ones he linked to. I DO see a variation of this one in the DT under Rye Whiskey, collected by Lomax, but the words I have from the 78 are slightly dufferent. Towards the end, there are some bad skips. I'll try to work them out later. In the meantime, here's the beginning: Jack O'Diamonds (to the tune of Rye Whiskey) O' Molly, O' Molly For your sake alone That I leave my old parents My house and my home. You cause me to roam I'm a rebel soldier and Dixie's my home. Jack O'Diamonds, Jack O'Diamonds I know you (of old?) You robbed my poor pockets Of silver and gold. Whiskey, you villian You've ???? You've kicked me, you've cuffed me But I love you (for all?) Her parents don't like me They say I'm too poor They say I'm not worthy To go through her door. They say I drink whiskey My money's my own And, them that don't like me Can leave me alone. I'll eat when I'm hungry And drink when I'm dry And when I get thirsty I'll lay down and cry. Eat steak when I'm hungry Drink whiskey when I'm dry Greenbacks when I'm hard up And heaven when I die Rye whiskey, rye whiskey Rye whiskey, I cry If I don't get rye whiskey I surely must die. O baby, O baby I've told you before You make me a pallet I'll lay on the floor. I'll build me a castle On yonder mountain high Where my true love can see me When she comes riding by Where my true love can see me And help me to mourn I'm a rebel soldier And Dixie's my home. I'll get up in my saddle My ??? in my hand And think of you, Molly ??? in some (distant land?) I'll thinnk of you, Molly You cause me to roam I'm a rebel soldier... (more later, I hope!) |

See thread 50984 and Lyr. Add.: The Rebel Soldier, posted by Dicho. Rebel Soldier In the same thread, the quote from The Traditional Balld Index fills in a lot of information. |
