big barton xmas session

28 Nov 04 - 12:47 PM (#1341210)
Subject: big barton xmas session
From: Bloke in the Corner

Here is your three week warning for the BIG Christmas session, to be held in the Six Bells, Barrow, on Tuesday 21st December, starting around 8.30 or earlier.
This will be the third in our half-termly celebration of traditional music on the Humber at a mixed session. Half-termly because we want to encourage schoolchildren to come and play, so they are held during school holidays. Last time we were delighted to see a budding flautist - SIX YEARS OLD! - give a sparkling performance, and other young musicians join her and play wonderfully well.
The session is mixed, music and singing, and it is completely anarchistic; there is no boss, etiquette is always meticulously observed, and I hope I can say that everyone enjoys the time with us. Jo, the landlady, supports us and will provide suitable provender. And the beer is good, too. Who's up for it?

Well, these have been so terrific i'll do my best to be there (Solstice celebrations permitting!)

MEANWHILE....

It's my birthday on Sunday (12/12) and as luck would have it there is to be another session in Lincoln at the Strugglers Inn this Sunday from 3pm.
It would be great if any of my respected colleagues from Barrow etc could join me to hoist a few!
The pub is an old fashioned real ale place, and the session will be through the pub and into the marquee at the back. It's located just under the Castle walls, round the corner from the Lawns. It's Sunday, so yellow line parking is no problem, and there are car parks nearby too.
PLEASE come over you lot - it would be great to see you in Lincoln for a change!
free pint to the first to wish me happy birthday in Irish!!

Well, there's the room we play in.... then there's the room in which we play and the "playing in" room.
It will, I'm sure, be crowded - only right and proper for the BIG BATRON XMAS SESSION - held in Barrow, but who wants Christmas spirit with two guitar and a Bodhran?
Anyway, we are assembling some of the finest traditional musicians in the area, and some of the youngest, so the music will be of the highest order; Karen & Colin will be doing some songs along with me & maybe a few others, plus plenty of jigs, reels and other fantastic music. You could look on it as a sort of coming together à la Band Aid - but without the other connotations. Just a great way to kick off Christmas! And I'm SOOOO looking forward to meeting loads of friends/musicians old & new. Don't forget, we're 98% genetically the same as monkeys. What makes us different? Why, the music of course. No other animal makes music for pleasure. When we play & sing, we affirm our humanity in a very positive way! Here endeth.....

Jaqui

Take the A15 (N_following signs for the Humber Bridge. Just before the bridge (the last turn off before you have to spend a fiver to double back) is the A 1077 turning for Barton and Scunthorpe. Turn right at the rounabout following the signs for Barton. At the roundabout at the bottom the hill turn right (third exit) following the A 1077 signs toward Barrow on Humber. In 3 miles you hit the roundabout just outside Barrow. Turn right then bear left in 500 yards. This takes you into Barrow Village. Turn left as the road bears to the right in front of some shops and a brothel. This is the Market place. The Six Bells pub is just across the road.

I hope that helps.

Sorry to miss you GS.

We had a great time, although were a bit disappointed that we were unable to make spend much time with Mudcatters due to the smoky atmosphere in that particular part of the pub, which was supposed to be non smoking. Unfortunately, as a result, Kendall spent all night wheezing and coughing and is still unwell this morning. He has also been told by his doctor to avoid smoky places since his cancer operation and worries, if he is subjected to smoke, that it is going to affect the healing process. Most people were kind enough to move out of the area to light up, but there will always be a few.....

The upside was that we spent the evening in the area where the children were gathered and it was a joy to see these children enjoying and joining in with the traditional music.

The directions supplied by Skip and Oaklet were superb - we didn't get lost once!

I'm still hoping to make Gainsborough on Friday evening, so might see some of you there.

47 years of smoking cost me my voice, so I really don't need any more toxic fumes in my lungs. If I'm in a place, as I was last night, where a handful of inconsiderate addicts are either to lazy or too ill mannered to take their filthy habit out of the room which is clearly posted NO SMOKING the only thing I can do is leave. Which I did. There were also a few who did honor the no smoking sign so that helped.
When I had had enough, we moved to the other romm (which had many more people than the smoky one) we found that it was more enjoyable all around. A group of kids were jumping right in and making music like you never hear in the states. (Children are not allowed in American pubs.)
Anyway, before I go to anymore sessions I will need to know if it is non smoking, and I understand Gainsborough is non smoking.

John from Hull, sorry I didn't get to spend any time with you, and I remember that I owe you a pint!

Don't wory Kendall, it was great to meet you, I had to leave early as my driver had to be up early for work.
Not sure if your still in the Yorkshire area, but tonight there is a Xmas Singers & Musicians night at Cottingham Folk Club, it is 3 miles west of Hull, and Strictly NO Smoking, [Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building].

Kendall, did you leave the room before or after I arrived? If after, I apologise MOST sincerely. I was blissfully unaware that it was a no smoking room, and would have refrained had I known, or been asked to stop. When I arrived there were ashtrays on the tables and smokers present so it didn't cross my mind.

I always try to be considerate in such matters. I have other friends who cannot, for reasons medical or otherwise tolerate a smoky atmosphere, my father being one of them.

Once again, apologies if I was one of the people who spoiled your evening.

Pete.

Kendall, sorry it turned into an ordeal for you - a real shame you were driven away by the smoke. I'm not a smoker and I can tolerate smokers near me but, having watched my mum die a horrible death caused by a smoking-related disease, I fully understand your feelings about those who ignored the 'No Smoking' signs (although I noticed some go out for a fag rather than smoke in the room, and thanks to them - they know who they are!).

Gainsborough is indeed a non-smoking venue and, if you're up to it, we will be delighted to see you and Jacqui Friday. Can't promise how many will be there, given that it's Christmas Eve, but we'll do our utmost to have a good time.

Sir jOhn, Ted, Lady Ted, Sweetfia, Daithi, Willa, Oaklet, 12StG, Banjo-Flower, Deanmeister, Bassic, KT - good to see you all and looking forward to the next time.

I would like to point out that Hull Smoking Club also smoked outside the room until kendall left. I think because there were so many people there last night, they needed two rooms, the normal pub smoking policy was reversed, with the larger room being designated non smoking instead of the small room.

Having heard what jacqui and Kendall have said about the smoking, my decision not to go was a correct one as my chest is still dry and full. Having said that, I was so sad to miss the evening, as like Gainsborough and Market Rasen at the end of last week, missing out on my "fix" of music is a tragedy to me...also missing all the "Catters" at the same time, especially jacqui and Kendall...Ah well, there'll be another time no doubt..but it won't be Friday as I will be in Devon.
So jacqui and Kendall, how much longer are you staying? Will we get to meet?
Best wishes to all for a great Christmas anyway.

We're here until New Year's Eve when we head down south to Morticia's. We are up to Scotland for a concert on the 29th and come back on the 30th.

Anything happening between Christmas and the New Year?

Yup, I was in there before I went into the big room! I give up, which one was no smoking? The little one with Colin & Karen, or the big one with all the children in it....? Cos I don't think I smoked in there....!

Oh well, Merry Christmas to one and all....!

Pete.

Wow, the biggest BIG session yet, just sooo full of music and singing! Great to see so many friends old and new; you will have probably read the SAD session thread, so see you there. I'll post the dates for the BIG BARTON WELCOME TO SPRING SESSION - half term in Feb 2005 - as soon as I ge back to school.
Until then, the merriest of all possible Christmases to you all, let us be constant in our efforts to keep traditional music alive and kicking in the New Year.
Just a thought - don't you think that, with around 50 musicians and singers we were probably the biggest traditional music session in the UK - maybe even in Europe - how about the world - last night?
Makes you feel quite proud, doesn't it?
HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS, PEACEFUL NEW YEAR
From Lawrie - bloke in the corner

I don't think anyone smoked to piss me off, but the NO SMOKING signs were big enough for Mr. McGoo to see.

Years ago I went to a banquet in a room full of people. There were ashtrays on the tables and huge No Smoking signs on all the walls. Well, this blowzy old slattern and her half witted son lit up. Some one told her there was no smoking allowed and she got all huffy, declaring that she paid to get in and saw no reason why she shouldn't smoke. Being unable to keep quiet, I told her that we all paid to get in and the rest of us were not smoking. She, in a loud voice said "Then what the hell are the ashtrays for"? I said "They are for the illiterates who can't read the damn signs." They left.

GUEST,Steve it was a fantastic night, but it is now history and its time to move on ,in my opinion it's pointless to point fingers at people and cause bitterness,I think its time to let go

And regarding the "no smoking" signs I was in the room when the landlady was trying her hardest to please everyone and faced with a vast influx of people(50+ in a little english country pub on a dark cold Tuesday night) and faced with an overflow into her no smoking room destinctly said Ignore the "no smoking" signs for tonight

Gerry(BTW I am not a smoker)

RE the smoking. It had been agreed with the landlady that for that particular night, smoking would be allowed in that little room, designated normally for no-smoking.As it turned out the bigger room,in which smoking is normally allowed, turned out to be predominantly non-smoking, so probably most folks were accomodated.

What a good night! Thanks to those who organised it and particularly to Jo of course, who looks after us all so well.No wonder she got rather stressed with such an influx of visitors. It was a great pity that the 'No Smoking' room was switched, but that was the right decision in the circumstances.
I'm glad you enjoyed the children's playing, Jacqui and Kendall- I just hope they'll still let us join in when they stage a takeover in a few years time.
I was at Cottingham last night where we had another four talented young musicians playing/singing. Great stuff!

As Banjo-Flower already said, we all agree it was a great night and a fantastic advert for folk music, maybe we need to let the smoking issue go now - smoking's an antisocial and dangerous activity, but it's over and done and no amount of argument can undo it. Maybe we just need to learn from Tuesday - all of us.

Kendall has a very real, valid reason for disliking the smoke, the guy did his best to join in and work with it, but sadly was beaten by it in the end. That's a real shame - he's in our country as a guest and it would have been nice if we could have accommodated him a little better, but que sera, sera! Hope we see you at Gainsborough Christmas Eve, Kendall and Jacqui, but if not - have a good one and safe journey home.

Otherwise, Jo worked her butt off to make everyone feel welcome, and how many other publicans would have turned their entire pub over to a bunch of folkie wierdos? She's a great landlady and a true friend to the Barton Sessioneers - Good On Yer Lass!

And thanks for the kind comments KT, very much appreciated.

So here's to the next one..................!!!!

I didn't know until right now that it was decided by the establishment to allow smoking in the no smoking room. I thought the smokers were just being selfish.

Me too Kendall. I guess the message got lost amongst all the brou-ha-hah. Must have been a big misunderstanding there - I thought the room I was in was the non-smoking room. Duh!

Smoking aside, I had the most wonderful night. It was very nice to see everyone again and meet new people. Thank you to Jo the Landlady for her tremendous hospitality and Bloke for his excellent unelected nonleadership. Sadly I'll mess the SAD session but I hope to be back in Barrow soon.

PS Banjo-Flower, if you can remember the name of that tune I'll buy you a pint next time!

Happy christmas,

Richard.

Nobody has commented on my theory that we were, for a brief few hours, probably one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, gathering of traditional musicians and singers on the planet.
Why doesn't anyone listen to me??
