BS: War on Terrorism Called Off...

Well, gol danged...

Wasn't it the Bush folks who just a month ago were huffin' and puffin' about John Kerry not being up to the task of fighting the War on Terrorism?

Now, we learn that the only folks trying to find bin Laden's gang have called it quits. Yup, seems that Pakistani Army, which are the only folks trying to get bin Laden, have said "We quit!"...

After a meeting with tribal elders (think Taliban here...) Lt. General Safdr Huusin, representing the Pakinsani Army, has agreed to shut down the last checkpoint in Wana, the main town in South Wazirstan.

So, I guess the war is over...

At least in Al Qaeda country, that is...

...while we're on the subject, has anyone seen any of those color-coded "terror alert level" thingies on TV since the election?

I would give long odds that bin Laden is dead and has been for months.

The next time you will see scare propaganda like that is when Bush wants to get the public onside for another war, Carol. I wish him no luck.

Ah, yes...the glorious war releases from our brave Wehrmacht, fighting to liberate the towel-head foreigners. Those, of course, will continue, be assured.

Don't start by providing facts from American newspapers, Bobert. You'll mess up someone's day.

All of the links GUEST,US has provided appear to be from Pakistan, China, India, and, of all sources, Al Jazeera. If I had posted links to those particular sources to prove a point, GUEST,US, would you have accepted them?

And the opposite side of this story is being provided by a representative of the Western news media. I am very curious to know what is causing this information divide that seems to be split very neatly along Western/non-Western lines.

No point asking questions. He never answers the question. Just posts new links that don't answer either.

CC:

The reason I chose foreign sources is because they would be the first to report something beneficial to the terrorists. And some people claim you can't trust US sources.

It does seem that all kinds of conflicting information comes from the middle east which makes it harder to determine the truth.

Tonight the Washington Post's article, which I mentioned in opening this thread, has been backed up by NBC news... How many sources would you like there, US, before admitting that the Bush folks have "quit" the War on Terrorism????

OK, let me see if I have this right.

The Iraq War was about getting rid of Hussein. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The Iraq War was about getting rid of MMDs. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The Iraq War was about getting rid of terrorists. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

So, time to go home?

Asia News, Pakistan denied on Sunday that it is pulling out its security forces from the main town in the tribal area near the Afghan border.

A military spokesman said on condition of anonymity that "there is no pull out of troops from South Waziristan Agency or any other area of Federal Authorized Tribal Areas (FATA) and actions will be taken as and when required if there is credible information about presence of foreign miscreants in the area or their involvement in the terrorist activities,"

Only the check posts in the area would be handed over to local tribesman but there was no withdrawal of forces, the spokesman added.

On Saturday, the Pakistani media has quoted Pakistan Army's Corps Commander Lt-Gen Safdar Hussain as saying that the forces would be pulled out from Wana sub division following guarantees by local tribesmen that they would not harbor fighters.

But Defense Spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sutan said on Sunday that the forces would not be withdrawn from the troubled region.

The military spokesman also said that military operations would resume in Mehsud area of South Waziristan where some of the wanted suspects have not turned themselves in.

The spokesman also explained that there were three reasons for deploying security forces in the Federal Authorized Tribal Areas (FATA): secure the western borders, help the political administration in carrying out the development activities and hunt for foreign and local suspects hiding in some of these areas.

It looks to me like there are two different issues being discussed here. One issue is the Bush administration's "war on terror", and the other, the efforts of the Pakistan government to cooperate with the war on terror. From what I'm seeing here in this thread, it looks to me like some people in the West want us to think that Pakistan is being intransigent and not helping with the war on terror effort. And Bobert is trying to draw our attention to the Bush administration's half-hearted efforts on behalf of the same.

I think these differences are very important to keep in mind when discussing these issues.

It seems the pullout report was based on the statements of Safdar Hussain.

However other higher up officials are not calling it a pullout, just a turnover of the checkpoints to locals who "promise" to be on the lookout for bad guys.

Pakistan, under Musharaff, is our best ally in regards to Afghanistan and finding Osama. Several top Al Qaeda people have been captured by Pakistan. US forces cannot operate inside Pakistan. Us forces wait just across the border in case the Paks flush out any terrorists.

Musharaff risks assassination every day to help the US and to get rid of the Taliban in his country.

I don't see any weakening in the efforts of Bush or Musharaff to fight the war on terrorism. Why would there be?

It has just been brought up again that not much has been done to shut down the Madrassas schools in Pakistan which teach hatred and graduate Muslim Fundamentalist Extremists.
