Lyr Req: Down by the River (from Fred Holstein)

I'm missing Fred today, remembering him sing a lovely little tune with simple banjo accompaniment--something like:

Love, love me,
down by the river;
love, love me,
down by the river side.

Had a little gal in Shiloh Town
(Down by the river)

Does this ring any bells with anyone? Art Thieme?

I can hear Freddy a-singin' in my head. If nobody knows, maybe Ed might.

Hope to hear from you.

Best,
Deborah

Down by the River
(traditional)

CHORUS
Love, love me,
down by the river;
Love, love me,
down by the riverside.
Love, love me,
down by the river;
Love, love me,
down by the river side.

I got a letter from Shiloh Town
(Down by the river)
Sayin' Lewistown is a-burnin' down
(Down by the riverside)
CHORUS

Got a little lady, live in the pine,
(Down by the river)
Ain't good-lookin' but she takes her time,
(Down by the Riverside)
CHORUS

Hush, little baby, don't you cry,
(Down by the river)
You'll be an angel by and by,
(Down by the Riverside)
CHORUS

Chaw my tobacco, spittin' the juice
(Down by the river)
Love my sister, but it ain't no use
(Down by the Riverside)
CHORUS

Anybody know anything else about this song?

The Fred Tribute cd is out. Betsy's version of Rock Salt and Nails is really great - but I wish they'd reissue the old Redhead album. Bonnie does a nice version of Nevada Jane. Well worth getting.

Deborah,

I recall Fred singing this, but not very often.

Somehow I connect it to the actual singing of Alan Lomax. Probably the finding and collecting of it too, but maybe not. I could be wrong though. When your memory goes, gorget it!!

---(P.S.--Deb did you ever try to contact me for that interview back when you said you were going to be doing that in N. Illinois?? I was at the Fox Valley Folk Fest over Labor Day---but didn't see you there.)

Interesting. My recollections of Fred, Johnny Cash and me at the memorial didn't make the CD. ;-)

Thanks to all. I'm so tickled that anyone else remembers the charming way Fred sang this.

[Personal to Art,] we are making another trip, last one was postponed pending Studs' availability. Let's correspond via e-mail, I'd like to set something up...

Warm regards.

The CD I linked to is Fred Holstein: A Collection, produced when Fred was still alive. Was there a tribute CD?

Yes, Joe, the recordings made by Rich Warren (WFMT-FM) at the memorial gathering for Fred at the Old Town School Of Folk Music last April--Chicago--were released recently as:

Remembering Fred--A Tribute To Fred Holstein----2 CDs

No label is listed and I can't find any ordering info at all on my copy. IF ANYONE HAS THAT INFO---PLEASE POST!! Three of the photos in the booklet look like mine -- ones that are also up on Bruce Kallick's web site at:

http://rudegnu.com/art_thieme.html

---but no matter---I'm glad to give something to the project. ---- I just noticed that credit for the very nice compilation is attributed to The Remembering Fred Group.---But all the artists donated their performances of their own songs. It's a Chicago communal effort I think.

Say, Joe, if you are still at the same box # in A........ CA I'll be sending you my copy. I'd already got one from WFMT and Rich Warren -- one that includes my maybe too earthy story for inclusion in these unique times. ;-)

Same place, Art - Applegate, California. Thanks a lot.

I believe the set is only available as a "thank you gift" in return for pledging $120 to WFMT -- one can pledge online at
https://www.pledgewttwwfmt.com/index_wfmt.html
Remembering Fred is a 2-CD set of more than 40 performances offered in tribute to the memory of folk great Fred Holstein that took place at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music on April 3, 2004. A portion of this gift will go to the Fred Holstein Scholarship Fund at the Old Town School.
The back cover includes this credit: "Cover and final photographs are courtesy of the Old Town School of Folk Music. Other photos courtesy of Art Thieme and Hariet Udelson."
