I am looking for a list of the top 10 irish wedding songs. All except "the" "Irish Wedding Song" itself. Cant wait to see the list! Conrad

The notorious Conrad Bladey has now struck Mudcat! This always means trouble. He has been banned from at least one newsgroup list that I know of. If we don't reply we may survive.

That was a positive comment.....thanks! Just remember that I simply asked for a few song/dance music titles. Yes you may include dance music as well as songs and airs!

I would like to know what you would consider to be the top ten titles of Irish Wedding Music.

If that threatens you perhaps you should seek help!

And not only that but I have been here before! A very helpful place generally....with of course the exception of that last response.....

I am just interested in titles and have no interest in discussing them so perhaps you can stop being threatened now!

Hi conrad,

We've had several threads on this one..... not necessarily limiting it to 10. but if you do a search for Celtic Wedding, Irish Wedding, Irish wedding Mass... type of thing (they have been refreshed again in the last few weeks) it should give you an idea.

Greetings and thanks! I boiled down the submissions and this is the result- quite a mixture. I would add that Sean O' Riada wrote a few Gaelic Masses and his son Peadar has at least one Cd. out with some other good tunes as well. Conrad

My Singing Bird
The Limerick Rake
My Bonny Boy is Young But He's Growing
Maids When You're Young (never wed an old man)
The Old Woman From Wexford.
My Lovely Rose of Clare
The Wild Rover
Mary From Dungloe
Carraickfergus
The German Clockwinder
Bunch of Thyme
Go Lassie Go

It's a bit scary, thinking of some of these songs at weddings.

"Oh, please, don't let me die an old maid in the garret"

"Let him go, let him tarry, let him sink or let him swim; He don't care for me, and I'm sure I don't for him He can go and find another, and I hope she'll bring him joy For I'm goin' to marry a far nicer boy"

Maids When You're Young (never wed an old man)

and even that saddest of songs, Carrickfergus.

I'm surprised that Don't Get Married Girls wasn't included.

Actually, when I think about it a bit more, these songs probably suit modern day weddings far better than the sugary-sweet romantic fantasies often served up in wedding songs. Romantic life is a lot more complicated in the post-sexual-revolutionary age. ;->

I don't think a list of Irish wedding songs is complete without "Begorrah"

Bert.
