01 Dec 04 - 06:39 PM (#1344836) Subject: BS: Lest We Forget: History to Remember From: Amos On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, defied the law by refusing to give up her seat to a white man aboard a Montgomery, Ala., city bus. Parks was arrested, sparking a year-long boycott of the buses by blacks. |

The boycott lasted 382 days and brought Mrs. Parks, Dr. King, and their cause to the attention of the world. A Supreme Court Decision struck down the Montgomery ordinance under which Mrs. Parks had been fined, and outlawed racial segregation on public transportation." A victory for humanity by a brave woman who didn't turn the other cheek. |

02 Dec 04 - 08:28 AM (#1345340) Subject: RE: BS: Lest We Forget: History to Remember From: Bobert Just a sad footnote here but the voters of Alabama just this past month voted on a referendum to keep "segregationist" language in their constitution when it comes to white and "colored" children being educated in the same schools. This is not a joke. The difference in vote totals fir the entire state was only about 1800 votes but the language prevailed. I'm sure Dr. King would find this dismal. Also, we really haven't achieved the goals of Brown v. Borad of Eductaion in that, yeah, we've made some strides but, fir the most part, we still have a long way to go in completely desegraating our schools. In the DC area we have few if any truly desegregated schools. Most are either *predominantly* black or white... Sorry to throw a wet blanket on remembering the achievements and courage of Rosa Parks. She is an American hero... Bobert |

02 Dec 04 - 02:13 PM (#1345580) Subject: RE: BS: Lest We Forget: History to Remember From: Cluin Haven't found these lyrics anywhere on Mudcat (or anywhere on the Web at all, in fact) so I might as well post `em here. One of my favourites, I like Keelo's songwriting a LOT. Big ideas and big words. Turn of the Wheel (1994 James Keelaghan) I don't know but I've been told This world was shaped from unformed matter Back when Chaos reigned supreme You and I were widely scattered Something coalesced from the universe's void Nothing was created; no, nothing was destroyed All you see around you is just something else reformed This steady state of matter is said to be the norm But wait for a turn of the wheel Wait for a turn of the wheel Reform and revolution are almost the same The heart aflame, the vital spark The engine that propels the state The voice that speaks out of the dark Martin Luther wrote a paper; he nailed it to the door Rosa Parks took her seat; she couldn't take it any more Galileo set the sun at the centre of the stage The things we never challenge are the things that never change But wait for a turn of the wheel Wait for a turn of the wheel Now I know it seems crazy, it's a paradox Change is constant; never ending Sometimes effects outweigh the cause The jury's out and the judgement's pending Maybe things are different from what you though you saw It isn't quite an axiom; it isn't quite a law Fortunes often rise and often they fall Somehow there will be a balance in it all But wait for a turn of the wheel Wait for a turn of the wheel |

How often we rush to judge others by their looks or whatever, & put Gods children into categories for the sake of rationalizing our prejudice. We did all that singing & protesting & free loving etc. for peace, but our world is more filled with wars than ever. wwhhaaaaassssssssssuupppp? all we are saying, is . . . |

I feel that its loveliness increases the amount of peace and tolerance in the world. And I'm raising a crop of grandchildren (in cooperation with my kids, of course) who see other people as beings to be celebrated, enjoyed, loved. The 4yr. old I sat with last night, (we had to run to the groc. store while I was there) announced to me that, "Granny Tanny, we are so good. We are not yelling or running or pulling stuff off shelves. We are not hitting anyone." He was absolutely right. He knows what's important. And gorgeous? And smart? WWOOWW!!!! Sorry, got carried away. Tw |

11 Dec 04 - 10:11 AM (#1353935) Subject: RE: BS: Lest We Forget: History to Remember From: GUEST,Finn_Mac_Cuhal Bobert, I live in Alabama and while no doubt some of the nay voters on the Alabama constitutional amendment did so for reasons of bigotry, the main impetus for rejecting the measure was concern that the language changes in the amendment would allow judges in Alabama to direct tax increases for funding education. To be certain, education in Alabama is underfunded and I have supported several tax increases to better fund Alabama's schools despite my being a political conservative. However, taxes should be levied by a direct vote of the electorate or by representatives elected by the people. Judges should interpret the law...not make it. Governor Riley intends to raise the amendment again but with language to reassure those voters concerned about judicially-based tax increases. I expect the measure to pass when that happens. I hope so, at any rate. If not, I will have to agree with your assessment. Great board and thanks for listing the lyrics to this song. Keelaghan is a modern treasure. |
