El Greko Down Under Details

Subject: El Greko Down Under Details
From: George Papavgeris

Not what you thought, maybe... Blame your own dirty mind if so.
Instead, here are the details of my appearances in Australia in December:

17th Dec: Merry Muse Folk Club, Canberra
18th Dec: Almost Acoustic Club, Sydney
19th Dec: House session, Sydney (PM freda underhill for details)
22nd Dec: Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre, Brisbane
(joint gig with Cloudstreet - wheeey!)

A sturdy Hiscox case having been purchased, my favourite Jumbo Cort 12-string will be accompanying me, baggage handlers willing.

Champing at the bit, looking forward to meeting the Aussie Catters; and to seeing John and Nicole again. But most of all - forgive this soppy Wog Boy - I get shivers at the thought of bringing "Empty Handed" home.

Not long now.

Hello El Greko! I think I might just join your fan club soon! :0) :0) Been looking at your piccies....lovely...and your family....even more lovely! Have been onto your website too! Hope you don't mind...:0)

You see it's people like you who make me SO angry!........but, in the nicest way, don't panic!! :0) Why aren't you on my radio and tv? Why aren't your words being taught in schools? Where are the poets and the compassionate people? Why aren't your songs everywhere? So many superbly talented people, so many wonderful words and they all need to get out and be heard!!! I think I need to invade the BBC and take it over.

I mean listen to this....'Isn't it a shame to watch the heroes led by zeroes. Why are we still fighting for Caligulas and Neros?"

Brilliant George!!!!! Abnsolutely Brilliant!

Please go and knock on Tony Blair's door and sing it to him for Christmas! You know sometimes I look at my 10 year old son when he sleeps and I shudder for the future. I think of those lads from the Blackwatch who won't be home this Christmas and all the many, many others too! And the worst part is that I don't know why they lost their lives....it all just so wrong! I hear Show of Hands 'Crooked Man' and the same feelings are stirred.

We need you George! Keep writing and singing! Get it out there and keep playing! There's loads of us out here listening! And we're starting to jump up and down about this music being constantly denied so many people, especially the children who are the future!

And you've written so many songs! You see, we just have to save Sidmouth so that you can come here and play!!! :0) :0) I have to go and finish making lunch now, but I'll be back reading all about you and listening to your music afterwards!

And now I'll leave you all to get back on topic! Spread the word though guys! George ROCKS!...FOLKS! :0)

Merry Christmas and enjoy Oz!

Lizzie :0)

welcome to the club Lizzie.

Bloody hell he only just wrote 'C n N' too if what he told me last night is true, and it is.

I'm going to miss the chap for the next 4 weeks, and Vanessa.

Dont put it past him to record an album while he's away and have a CD launch in Oz of hitherto unreleased material.

I'll see him - El G -tomorrow at Herga where Shep Woolley completes his 'comeback to folk club tour'

Have you heard his 'Without you this Christmas' ? Have the tissues ready.

Breezy, what do you mean about tissues? "Without You On Christmas Day" is not a sexy song - oh, I see...

Good news about the rain - less chance of bush fires I hope, and a bit cooler. Sounds like a good Wet, anyways (practicing my Strine).

Change of plans: The Cort stays at home, and instead a Takamine 12-string waits for me at my son's place (half of what it would cost in the UK - wow), destined to become my "Aussie" guitar, in the hopes of my returning there; that is, if I am not declared persona non grata after singing in the Antipodes.

Kitty, the Turkish Knight will return with a vengeance in 2005...

Lizzie, you are MUCH (!!!) too kind ;-)! How about running my advertising & promotion? Seriously, thanks for the good words.

Now, where did I put those flight socks...3 days to go.

Thanks Steve, have a good'un yerself. Just has to be "Empty Handed" tonight - last rendition before it goes "home".

Anything is better than croc meat, Breezy - chicken texture with fishy flavour - yeaach. Roo meat's OK Pete, but I prefer the fish down there, they have some great baramundi (barracuda? barricade? Bar the shouting?) Sonny boy has procured an industrial-sized barbie, and there will be plenty of smoke rising from Melba, Canberra.

No, dear, don't pack THOSE thongs!

Sorry, got to go splash the boots...

not long before he arrives. He'll probably win the award for number of concerts performed while jet-lagged.

I was supposed to be getting on a bus to Canberra 9am tomorrow to go to the Merry Muse chrissy party, meet up with friends including the previous Muse manager who now lives in France, stay with Canberra Chris & his lovely cat Pushkin & of course meet George & get my CDs but my back died & I've been off work all week. Thanks to my wonderful physio & help from friends it's getting better & will be back to it's normal imperfection in time for me to collect the money at Almost Acoustic & attend the session on Sunday. But I wanted to get to the Muse, she sez. throwing a very careful tantrum, don't want to put my back out again.

well, as I write, george is in sydney performing at Almost Acoustic.(I'm at my daughter's babysitting Rosie). Last night i saw him at the merry Muse in Canberra - what a night! a slightly chaotic venue, with a number of acts and the Polish beer was flowing.

Again, I can only say what a brilliant songwriter george is, and he has a beautiful singing voice. George, dont think of yourself as not a singer - you have a fine, lyrical voice, and it moves beautifully with that guitarwork.

I'm looking forward to more tomorrow night!

And so am I! Just come back from Almost Acoustic, where George was performing, as well as the Wheeze and Suck Band, putting on a Mummers play and also doing their own stuff. What a night! The place was packed and buzzing. We had to take extra tables and chairs to try to accommodate the extra people.

I agree with everything freda says, George. You are most definitely a singer, and a very expressive one, and the songs are wonderful. Needless to say, I bought all five CD's.

John was rather chuffed that you knew of "Andersons Coast". I'll have to try and get him back posting on Mudcat again. He hasn't posted here (as jack halyard) in ages - just too busy I guess.

See you tomorrow night!

tonight's session was also fantastic, a good group of Mudcatters & friends assembled & sang & sang & sang. I had assumed that freda or JennyO would have posted by now, but we left them still singing!! Maybe as it is 1pm now they might have stopped especially as several have to go to work in a few short hours.

I took a whole roll of film (37 pics) - all experimental, just like every pic I ever take, even some close ups (even more experimenntal). The last 4 pics show the Mudcatters & friends. - JennyG & Himself, JennyO, Jack Halyard, freda, El Greko & Vanessa, & me. When I get my printer/scanner working I can post some. I have 2 films to develop as another 37 were taken last night - I handed my camera to yet another Mudcatter Chris Maltby who takes good pics. Bob Bolton turned up for a short visit last night & also took a few pics, but missed George's set.

Tonight we were privileged to see the mutual admiration society of George & John swapping songs. As we were leaving the perfect picture presented - both with guitar in hands singing 'Jobsworth', & the room was ringing. Why didn't I take a second film?

highlights - George & Vanessa singing a wonderful old hymn, freda singing Miguel Heatwole's anthem to session singing 'The people have song' - you'll probably hear El Greko sing that one, John & Margaret singing 'Anderson Coast'& 'Newell highway', some of JennyG's old 19th century potboilers about dying young ladies, not a dry eye in the place - lots more great songs but I can't remember enough. what was Bill's song?

I really must get to bed. I'm sure jenny or freda will post more

Yeah, we just got back, after dropping George and Vanessa at their hotel. What a lovely session it was, and what delightful people they are! Why do the best people always live so far away? (grumble grumble). Must be something about Mudcatters. I didn't want Charlie, Judy and Brett to leave last year either.

As for the session, I wouldn't want to even start trying to name highlights - it was all so good. It must have been, for John to still have energy that late at night - he's strictly a morning person, unlike me, but when he is inspired, he seems to get his second wind.

Terry, I'll tell John what you said - in fact I will point him toward this thread. Even though he joined up as jack halyard a few months ago, he seemed to lose interest a bit afer a while. Maybe all this will spark it again.

George and Vanessa, I really hope you can make it to our place on the 8th - keeping my fingers crossed!

I sing John's songs at Herga quite often - particularly Anderson's Coast and Kitty Kane. I was very privileged to have Miguel Heatwole collect a song from me at Warwick Festival in July.

Glad to hear you're all having a great time with G & V - have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and do drop in at Herga if anyone from Oz is coming this way.

From: JennyO

Thanks Kitty, and Happy Yuletide Greetings to you too. I've been saving like mad with the idea of coming over. I was hoping I might make it next year, but I am going to have to spend a lot of my savings on another car very soon, so that might slow me down. When I do come, I'll most definitely try to include Herga in my plans.

I knew you sang Kitty Kane, but I didn't know you sang Anderson's Coast too. John sang it last night of course, at George's request. It really was as Sandra described - a mutual admiration society. Lovely to watch!

Miguel is amazing, isn't he! He's one of our most talented people. I've been in one of his choirs (Solidarity), since 1997, and did the UK tour in 2001. I probably could have met some mudcatters then, but I didn't know about Mudcat - didn't even have a computer. A lot has changed since then.

Well, as I said to John at the time, drinking bottled water is good, but drinking straight from the spring is always netter. Hearing "Anderson's Coast" from him was an experience I will treasure.

Thanks for the good words, folks! Having bags of fun - got back from Sydney yesteray, leaving for Brisbane and John & Nicole in 3 hours.

I seem to have avoided the worst of the jetlag. I get up early - 5:30am- to be ready for when grandson Timmy wakes up, so as not to lose a moment. He is positively edible!

Too much is happening too fast right now, for my impressions to come out on screen coherently. I will write more comprehensively after I return from Brisbane - probably Xmas eve.

But I'll say this - I wouldn't have missed this trip for anything in the world.

Hello Geo, we had a good evening at Hergs last night , everyone there,a good turn-out, all in good voice, plenty of humour and harmony.

Johnny delivered a poem by Lynne Heraud bout Christmas, worth hearing again, and Joyce's song sat very nicely too, in fact I may be interested.

Kitty 'Fairy when she's 40' was great while Graeme sang a medley, Ceorge monologued of the fairy on the Christmas tree - a trad for herga'since 1772 sorry 1972, Sparks was seasonal' Great Escape=Mary Poppins, Moses sang 'Santa Baby' tantalisingly, teasingly so all us men stood to pay much attention. Tim Frost cracked me up,twice, Mary had words with the lovely guitarist but I dont think they'll be playing together in the future, David sang and Peter told a joke and I sang 2 seasonalish songs.

Johnny was hitting the low notes too

The carol singing had been a success though rather cold, it was freezing Sunday night

Didnt miss you at all!!!!

Hope you and Vanessa have a super Christmas time, now to take the boys out.

I've always regarded you as a singer, otherwise you wouldn't be in my backing group, and when you do Thaney with guru well your harmony is simply awesome.

x;-} and Graham's bagpipes are something else

Yo ho you Queensland wailers who sing chorus and refrain

Hi George and Vanessa. Glad to hear you are still sessioning on. Are you still possibly going to be available to come to the BBQ and session at John's and my place on the 8th? It would be great if you can come. SussexCarole and Cranedriver will be here, amongst others.

Our weather here in Sydney is lovely at the moment too - says it is only 19 degrees, but it feels warmer - the main thing is that it's not too hot. It's just a bit windy, but not as bad as yesterday was.

The kangaroo scrotum pouch reminds me of a pome by one of our bush poets, Blue the Shearer, about a bovine scrotum tester. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Jenny
