Malinky - Not Splitting Up

Dear Mudcatters. On behalf of Malinky I would like to inform you that, contrary to rumours, Malinky is very much NOT splitting up. All 5 of us have prowled this site in the past, and we know that you represent a broad section of the folk communities in Britain, Ireland, America, Australia etc. As such we feel it well worth while explaining the situation, as you will undoubtedly be able to spread the word. Karine and Leo are leaving in February 2005, and the new line up will be Jon Bews, Steve Byrne, and me with two new members; Fiona Hunter (vocals, cello) and Ewan MacPherson (mandolin, guitar, bouzouki, banjo, vocals). We hope that you will continue to be supportive of us and also of Karine in her solo role. Many thanks, m.d. (malinky)

Thanks, Mark

I wasn't aware of the 'rumours' but I've been really busy with other stuff recently.

I will confess that I thought Karine's contributions to be pretty much integeral to the 'Malinky sound' I will continue to support you if you continue to be any good....

All the best,

Ed

Good to hear Malinky is still around.

Seems like I've met Fiona at a Celtic Colours a couple of years ago. If she is the one I'm thinking of, you'll do well.

Best of luck to Karine and Leo in their new endeavours.

I'm looking forward to hearing the new line-up in Germany - and Karine, too. The best of luck to both!

Add my good wishes to the rest: I've been a big Malinky fan for a long time (especially since you let me play your bodhran, Mark!) and I KNOW that WITHOUT A DOUBT the "new" group and the leaving members will do well. I hope to get to one of your "farewell to Karine and Leo" gigs in the next couple of months.

Sorry to hear Leo is leaving but Fiona is a wonderful replacement for Karine. If anything this will strengthen the band and give the music a fresh new lease of life. I look forward to hearing the new line-up - will your gig at 'Celtic Connections' in January include both the new and the old?

Yes, there will be "Goodbye and Hello" gigs at Celtic Connections (25th Jan), The Pleasance, Edinburgh (11th Feb), and The Lemon Tree (12th Feb). Please spread the word. Weepiper actually told us that there had been a thread recently saying we were splitting, so obviously I had to get on the case pronto. We're very excited by the prospect of playing with Fiona and Ewan, and we hope the transition will be as smooth as possible, and that folk still come to our gigs, buy albums, the usual stuff. I don't think I'm breaking any great secret by saying that we would like to have a new album before the end of 2005, but there is a lot of work to do prior to that. The new line-up will have a demo in time for Celtic Conns, so keep your ears peeled. Cheers, m.d.

Glad to hear you guys have sorted everything out Mark!
I probably won't see you before Xmas so have a good one and could you please pass that on to the rest of the band, and also could you please tell Steve that it's "Not very friendly" that he's not yet sent me the CD's he promised me!

muppitz x
(Tina, the pissed up one that chewed your ear off in the Greek restaurant at Derby, I apologise again for my inebriated state that night, except if I was of any comedy value!)

Tina - I've started another thread about traditional customs and games at folk events. I believe your Malinky ear-chewing in Greek restaurants would qualify.

Mark, you're taking my name in vain there, I said no such thing. Jon informs me somebody came up to him at Fareham saying they'd seen a thread on here about a split-up. Chinese Whispers going on I think!

cheers, weepiper

I just got back from a week at the Celtic College and Festival (Goderich Canada). I took an excellent vocal harmony (and arranging) class led by Malinky's Steve and John - and heard the whole band in performance. Great playing - gorgeous singing and superb songs. Fun to have shared mutual recording experience with David Francey.

So glad to have met Malinky!

You can see Malinky in Edinburgh on Monday evening at the "Acoustic Music Centre" aka St Bride's centre, that's if they're not sold out already.

Wow! I wonder if 2 1/2 years between posts on a thread is a record?

Goderich was an amazing week for us, what a great place! We're all really hoping that we'll be asked back at some point. Ya never know.

We're playing in Edinburgh, as stated, on Monday. Birnam on Thursday, then we're in Italy next week. Malinky will be running as a rather more full-time concern from now on, so keep an eye on the website for gig details. In short, it's a UK tour in October, Scottish dates in November, USA in January, and US/Canada in February/March 2008. Other stuff is still at the planning stage. Next German and Dutch tour will be in Late 2008.

Thanks to all the Mudcatters who've been so kind to us for the last 9 years. With a bit of luck the next 2 years will see us working a lot more!

Hi Mark!

I decided to give the notion of recycled threads a new twist.

Oh, and I'm glad I bought your Malinky CD. It's been played many times already. I am likewise a David Francey fan and friend, and he backed me up on one of his songs on my latest CD as well. Your version of The Flowers of Saskatchewan on the Goderich stage was appropriately heartwrenching - what a song.

I enjoyed their night in Edinburgh, but as with so many Fringe shows, far too short!! (for the money!)

Mark, who is your German agent? And will you be coming to Kellinghusen again? If not I might put some other venues in the area on the scent. Northern Germany tends to be neglected by foreign tours these days.

BTW, to keep the thread creep minimal, you might contact me direct at:

I booked Malinky for Llantrisant Folk Club, with Karine, six years ago. Three days to go and I had a stroke - what a bummer! I've recovered somewhat, but I still haven't seen them. It's good news that you're not splitting...
