The Drum refers to the threshing machine and Bills job was to carry away the sacks of grain when the drum had done its job. Huges weight and he isn't a big chap. Perhaps that is where his well documented hernia began! |

Incidentally, on the subject of big weights being carried, a quarter (as mentioned in the song) amounts to 448 pounds, two sacks at 224 pounds each, and Bill saw that as the job he preferred. |
