i had never heard of snickerdoodles until i saw that toyota camery commercial on tv...a little girl is selling cookies and tries to sell some to a lady who just purchased a new toyota camery...
the lady tells the kid that she has no money at the time. the little girl then lamblast's into the great things that you find on a new toyota, and then proudly informs the lady that she will be billed for a dozen boxes of "snicklerdoodles!"...(after all,if she can afford a new toyota, she can certainly afford some cookies!)
meanwhile,my daughter is staying the winter with us to help me look after peg,who had a terrible time during the past two winters with arthritus,diabetes,etc..just this week,my daughter baked a bunch of snickerdoodles and man, what a delicious cookie!!!
and to top that off, saturday i was in one of the little christmas shops in mt.airy,n.c.,and the place smelled so good!
the young lady behind the counter informed me that they were serving snickedoodle coffee!!!WOW! it smelled terrific and to my amazement, tasted wonderfully like a liquid snickerdoodle cookie!!today, peg and i drove up to mt.airy, to purchase some of that coffee in the shop on main street!(meadows of dan,shoppe)...
now my daughter is baking snickerdoodle cookies again and we are having them with snickerdoodle coffee!
yummy! eat your heart out,'catters!!!!
it's a "nickerdoodle christmas"at tarheel place this year!

Good undercooked (chewy) or crunchy! MUST have milk for dunking.

My grandma used to make snickerdoodles. I got the recipe from her. My kids loved them. SNICKERDOODLES ARE THE BEST!

Here is the recipe cut from the bag of Gold Medal flour many years ago:

Snickerdoodles
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup margarine or butter
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 3/4 cups flour (Gold Medal, of course!)
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar (I find it needs 4 T)
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon (I find it needs 4 t)

Heat oven to 400o. Mix 1 1/2 cups sugar, the margarine, shortening and eggs in large bowl. Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. Shape dough by rounded teaspoonfuls [keep them pretty small!] into balls.

Mix 3 [4] tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon; roll balls in mixture. Place about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until set, 8 to 10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. About six dozen cookies.

*If using self-rising flour, omit cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
Note: unbleached flour can be used in this recipe.
High Altitude Directions (3500 to 6500 feet): Heat oven to 425o. Bake 7 to 10 minutes.

I find that the ultimate good combination is a strong cup of hot Earl Grey tea and a saucer of cookies. They are addictive.

Snickerdoodle has long been a common term in our home. When my 3 year old son was working on a lego masterpiece, his little brother came toddling over to "help." After the legos came tumbling down, three year old, in frustration, said,
"Ooooooohh,....... Why, you little...................SNICKERDOODLE!!!!" It was the worst thing he could think of to call him! The name has stuck ever since.

Okay, Tarheel, I'm off to check the cabinets for cream of tartar!! It's been a long time since we've had them around here.
