A big, giant, steaming subject...

Go to town.

Not all. Almost all, though. Best to avoid it entirely. Books provide richer scenery and better acting. And don't have commercials.

If you think that, why watch it? If you say "But I don't watch it"! How do you know it's s....?. What is the benchmark for judging TV? Do you judge it by what you like...if so please remember...you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time!
I pick carefully what I watch and have no complaints as there is so much else to do with my life.
Best wishes.

I watch it...about as often as I eat eggplant. That is, very occasionally. Therefore, I DO know of what I speak, yet I basically don't watch it. I did watch a lot of TV in the 70's, and a moderate amount of it in the early 80's. I watched much less in the late 80's and 90's, and still less now. The less TV I watch, relatively speaking, the more I enjoy the other things life has to offer.

I basically don't want to watch (or listen) to anything that is repeatedly interrupted by commercial advertising...and I don't.

I started this thread primarily with humorous or satirical intentions, but if you want to take it very seriously, go right ahead! :-)

I recommend starting threads about stuff you like, as I did about the good things in the 1980's, and then you won't be disturbed so much by threads like this one.

Go to town.

I might if I lived near Orillia. But the nearest town of any size to where I am right now is Phenix City. Of the two options, I think TV is the better one.

;-)

( ... and there's a 24 hour Monk marathon for New Year's Day on the USA network)

TV HAS lots of shite on it. ....and there are many things which are important, entertaining, fascinating, educational and useful. I have developed my personal filters pretty well, your mileage may vary.

well I like the TV. very much.......if I could afford it I would have one of those huge plasma screens and all the different satellite channels, and I would sequester myself somewhere where my irritating habit of strumming the guitar to the outpourings of the box could affect no other people.

however I can't. but i feel its something to aim for

I habv found tv to be a great compfort obv late, except for thet Star Trek show with the cornball starship skipper. I allus change the channel obver to the nearest info-mershall and study the audiences responses to the amazin' items thet are advertised thar instead.

CarolC, did you hear my beautifull accordeen yet?
It too sounds like shite so far I fear. One day tho, I will be az good as Clifton Chenier or mebbe Myron Floren. I yam a better singer than Shatney howsomebver, I am told.

Happy newyar to all, ebven unto Bill,

Maybe you should try being funny then....

98% of everything is crap... TV is no better or worse...   The real trick is what you do with the remaining 2%

I have forgotten the make of the box CarolC, but will PM you that stuff rather than risk someone starting a "Tweed's Beautimous Accordeen is Shite" thread. I habv slapped Shatney here already and the raft obv Liddle Harg hobvers obver me like the knife of Damacletus.

Yaz, Liddle Harg, 98% obv Bob Dylan's catalog is not shite. Catalogs in general are good to have in the crapper though.

At the moment Kendall is unwell. He doesn't really have the energy to want to read and we will not be going to the Gainsborough New Years Eve session as planned.

So I looked at the tv listings to see what was on that might entertain both of us this evening. I think that there is one film that MIGHT be worth watching but for the rest of it? No thanks. Over the past year, here and in the States, I've found that I am watching less and less tv. The quality seems to be dropping generally with so many repeats that, if you watched the programmes every time you could probably become word perfect.

In one episode of Star Trek (Next Gen) someone stated that tv had disappeared by about mid century 2000. At this rate that could be right.

Carol, I knew you were another Monkophile. I'm going to miss Bitty though......They had good chemistry it seemed.

Hawk, I'm sorry to not agree with you, but like Bill D., I have my own filters and 250 channels so I can find some syuff which is more than pablum. TV doesn't replace books but it can supplement them and also act as a trigger for one to dig deeper into a subject that before you were unaware of. Besides there are times that I simply want a diversion.

TV has its uses. I can't think of any, but lotsa people can. It makes me wonder what happened to the U; makes me want to buy a vowel.

I didn't know Bitty was leaving the show. I guess I'm not surprised. After watching the last few shows from last season, I was thinking they might do something like that. They seemed to be forshadowing a change involving Monk becoming less in need of a "nurse/assistant". Wouldn't it be a hoot if they got John Turturro on as a regular?

CarolC, I was wondering which picture you were going to refer to when you made the link. I thought the one we took at the Apollo on that cold stage was the one to make anyone envious. I hope you have had a wonderful Xmas and that you have a great New Year.

Flame wars aside, and returning to the topic at hand....

I suspect countries other than the U.S. may want to argue with this thread title, but I agree.

I have not renewed our cable subscription in over 2 years. My two sons complained at first, but they soon got used to no TV (we live in an area of poor reception). We rent movies or borrow them from the library, or read, or play games, or argue, or other things. For news, we use the Internet and the occasional newspaper (sometimes over the Web). But so much wasted time staring slackjawed at the tube is a thing of the past.

TV (and movies) bother me at a biological level. The flickering, the flashing, the unnaturally fast movement at times, the loudness. All just bug me!

I'm sure that if anybody looked into it, that they would find there are quite a few people like me in the world. It's probably one reason why few people I know watch Tv anymore.

I can't believe that business people are pumping millions of dollars into TV and movies without ever checking to see if people are being turned off by easily-avoidable irritants.

Don, I don't know why the picture taken at the Apollo would make anyone any more envious than the one I posted in this thread. It was the same accordion in both pictures.

;-)

Yes, we had a very good Christmas and just now, also a very good New Year's Eve. I hope you have had the same.

Happy New Year Carol and best to Jack!

I doubt they will but I do love John Turturro!!! What a choice for his brother and a great job by Turturro as well. They at least did leave it open for another episode with him.

People, I agree that a lot of TV bites the big one, but there are a ton of interesting and informative programs out there too. You won't find much on the trad networks but even they have the occasional enjoyable series. The Discovery/History/Health/Specialty Sports/Food/Music/Arts/etc. groups have some excellent programs. Some are just enough to make you want to know more and some are boring as hell.....it depends on you and your likes and dislikes.

For example, Hawk, who started this thread, has a love for military aviation and there is a LOAD of programming around that. Sure they replay a lot but lots of new every week too.

Gotta agree with you, Spaw. I still won't have a TV in the house, but I do agree that there is stuff that is valuable on the tube. Mostly a matter personal opinion for me. I wouldn't for a sceond argue the merits of my decision. Nor of anyone else's. "If people don't want to come to the game, there's nothin' you can do to stop them."

like I say it improves the programmes no end if you give them guitar/accordion/bodhran/trumpet accompaniment.

It adds another dimension, the only trouble being - other people don't like it, frankly they won't tolerate it.
