Help on this one please. I was given a request to do this one over the Christmas period, I had the basics of the song, but sooner than make a hash of it I said that I would learn it. Does anyone have the words and chords, and Who was the origional artist. Cheers Oombanjo.

Bob Dylan wrote it, but The Band may have got it onto tape before him. Ask Little Hawk. He knows about such things! The song is called "I Shall Be Released". Personally, I think it's a beauty. It should be easy to find with a Google search.

I SHALL BE RELEASED by Bob Dylan

They say ev'rything can be replaced,
Yet ev'ry distance is not near.
So I remember ev'ry face
Of ev'ry man who put me here.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

They say ev'ry man needs protection,
They say ev'ry man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd,
Is a man who swears he's not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud,
Crying out that he was framed.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Enjoy!

Subject: Chords Add: I SHALL BE RELEASED
From: Roger in Baltimore

From dylanchords.com.

I'm at work, so I haven't tried these. A couple of other sites had similar chords in the key of A Major. I suspect that is the key Dylan used. He may have achieved that by playing these chords with a capo on the second fret as the chords are more natural in G major.

G   C/g G
G                            Am
They say ev'rything can be replaced,
Bm       Am             G
Yet ev'ry distance is not near.
G                   Am
So I remember ev'ry face
Bm       Am             G
Of ev'ry man who put me here.
G                   C *)            *) Am in subsequent
I see my light come shining            verses
Bm       D *)          G
From the west unto the east.
G            Am
Any day now, any day now,
Bm D/a       G
I shall be released.

Enjoy!

I still get chills from the performance of this song in The Last Waltz.
