I'd known the man for 20 years, when he decided he was the great love of my life. I didn't know he'd been married five times, before. I never knew he got into fights. I found out that his story about being a Navy Seal was bogus. (Do they have Navy Pigs?) Oh, and he wears Japanese clothes most of the time. He isn't Japanese, he just dresses that way. I lent him $20 to go home on, and considered it money well spent. He hasn't paid back, and he hasn't returned. That second makes me not mind the first. |

I won't go into detail about how many times I have been screwed over by women, but I will say, with the help of a good therapist I was able to find out why I was attracted to inappropriate women and how to avoid them in the future. Stop blaming others for your problems, find out why you are only attracted to assholes, then do something about it. You have work to do, get on it. Claiming that ALL men are bastards says more about you than about them. |

And I was young and brain-washed enough to stay married to him for 10 years. I refer to it as my "apprenticeship". And, I guess it was good experience. The first he said was his girlfriend in high school whose dad beat her severely and nearly killed her, so he married her to get her away from him. Then next was his ex-wife with whom he had 2 girls. He said that while he was working in the offshore oilfields that she cheated on him with 13 and 14 year old boys. (Actually, I can believe that about her as she would let her now husband trade sex with the girls for drugs with his dealers- sick B****H! So the weekend prior to marrying my now wonderful husband, he married some girl he was living with, then the weekend I got married she left him. Later he hooked up with a girl half his age that I actually liked okay. While we were talking one day she said that she was at home telling my ex and his brother how embarrassed that she was to tell her parents that she was going to be wife #3. Imagine her surprise when my ex-brother-in-law informed her that she would be #7. And imagine my shock when I learned I was #5! But even so, the crap that I endured from him and other lying men made me appreciate my husband that I have now. So look at the positives in men, and if possible, get to know his mother. How he treats her and how she treats him will tell you volumes about his character. Susu |

He was Mr IT and we knew she was doomed. I met her again years later after the marriage had failed, as had a series of relationships with guys...different name, same type. I just couldn't understand why she couldn't see it. Finally she deliberately got pregnant in her early 40's as a desperate measure to hook a guy who was completely unsuitable and who bolted. Now she's in her 60's, gone to fat, gone to seed. Always she made the wrong choice. It was infuriating to watch it and no one could stop her or help her, although some good men would have fallen at her feet. Of course now, she badmouths all men! |

Love is found within. Once one is happy and secure and loving within, then one is in a good position to form many positive relationships on the outside with others...and may find oneself quite content with OR without that one, special, significant other that is mythologized in society as the classic lover or spouse. That's my take on it. I would not have seen it that way in my 20's, though. Or in my 30's. I had to learn by hard experience, and it took until my mid-50's to do that. |

One thing that I've noticed is that women might be well advised to see how men really treat each other. This would give them insight. Women have been abused at the hands of men probably more often than vice-versa. They have been denied equality of citizenship by the idiotic refusal of white fat men in office to honor the Equal Rights Amendment which is long overdue. Parity and fairness in equal pay for equal work would make a difference too. The abuse of women has been a hallmark of many reactionary organized fundamentalist religions. I believe that the "Promise Keepers" is responsible for keeping women in subservient positions. The "strict father" image suggested by George Lakoff is the major problem. It rationalizes abuse by sadistic men who prey upon women as if they were occupying another country. Fortunately, not all women or men tolerate this kind of thinking. Frank |
