I've been trying to find the lyrics to "The Name Of The Game Is Stud" and "My Son John", both by Tom Paxton. They don't seem to be in the DT and I haven't been able to turn them up on the Web.

Can anybody help?

Thanks!

Hi Rapaire,

Thanks for reminding me of this great song. I used to do it 30 years ago and I haven't thought of it in ages. The chords are as I remember them but that don't mean they are right. I have also never seen this song in a Paxton song book anywhere.

I can't help with the Poker song, sorry, I never played it.

Don

MY SON JOHN
Words and Music by Tom Paxton

M(C)y son, John, was a go(G)od boy, and go(C)od to me. (G walk to C)
Wh(C)en we had hard ti(G)mes, well, he sto(C)od by me.
We were i(F)n work and o(G)ut of work and o(C)n the go.
If he ha(F)d complaints, I ne(C)ver heard of o(G?)ne.
He would pi(F)tch in and he(G)lp me like a fu(C)ll grown man.
My son, Jo(G)hn. John, my s(C)on.

My son, John, went to college and he made his way.
Had to earn every penny, but he paid his way.
He worked summers and holidays and through the year,
And it was no easy struggle that he won.
But he laughed at the ones who thought he had it hard.
My son, John. John, my son.

My son, John, got his uniform and went away.
With a band playing marches, he was sent away.
And he wrote me a letter, when he had the time.
He was loosing his buddies one by one.
And I prayed, and tried not to read between the lines.
My son, John. John, my son.

My son, John, came home yesterday; he's here to stay.
Not a word, to his father, have I heard him say.
He seems glad to be home, but I can't be sure.
When I ask him what he'd seen and done.
He went up to his bedroom, and he closed the door.
My son, John, John my son.
He went up to his bedroom, and he closed the door.
My son, John, John my son.

search on "And Lovin' You" -- I posted the Paxton lyrics and - I think- the chords a while back - great song and very appropriate for Chicago today.

THE NAME OF THE GAME IS STUD was on Tom Paxton's 1965 album "Ain't That News!" That album, combined with the 1964 "Ramblin' Boy", has been reissued as a CD "Ramblin' Boy/Ain't That News!" Elektra/Warner Strategic Marketing #73565, 2001. I transcribed this from a sound sample:

Well, late last night in the Kettle of Fish, I was havin' a glass of beer,
When up comes a rounder by the name of Sam, and [or "ain't"?] lately been seen around here.
He gives me a howdy and he buys me a drink and he calls me by my name,
Says, "Some of the boys are just a-waitin' upstairs. Would you like to have a poker game?"

They were four or five fellers 'round the table upstairs. The smoke was thick as sin.
They took my coat and they pulled up a chair and they proceeded to deal me in....

THE NAME OF THE GAME IS STUD
(Tom Paxton)

Well late last night in The Kettle Of Fish I was having a glass of beer
When up comes a rambler by the name of Sam that has lately been a-seen around here.
He gives me a "Howdy" and he buys me a drink and he calls me by my name,
Says "Some of these boys are just waiting upstairs, would you like to have another game?"

There were four or five fellers round a table upstairs and the smoke was thick as sin,
They took my coat and they pulled up a chair and they proceeded to deal me in.
I started in winning with the very first hand and I kept on winning for a while,
I had money in my pockets and money in my shoes and money in a great big pile.

  Chorus:
It's, O Lordy don't you see this old stud poker'll be the ruin of me
You got to get ready to shed some blood when the name of the game is stud.

I kept on winning for an hour or more and the boys were feeling low.
I was looking like a winner and feeling like a sinner and I just about had to go.
I caught a pair of aces on the very last hand and I bet my whole bank roll,
But Sammy had a pair of deuces on the deck and another deuce in the hole.

You know I lost every penny that I had in the world, I lost my last red cent.
Now my old woman ain't talking to me and the landlord wants his rent.
I know I had it coming and I sure enough did and I've only got myself to blame
But my fingers keep itching and I keep twitching just to find another poker game.

Here it is with the chords:

THE NAME OF THE GAME IS STUD
Tom Paxton

Well, [A]late last night, in the Kettle of Fish,
I was havin' a glass of [E7]beer,
When up stepped a rounder by the name of Sam,
That's lately been seen around [A]here.
He gives me a howdy and he buys me a drink,
And he calls me by my [E7]name,
Says: "Some of the boys are just a-waitin' upstairs,
Would you like to have a poker [A]game?"

There were four or five fellas on the table upstairs,
The smoke was thick as sin.
They took my coat and they pulled up a chair,
And they proceeded to deal me in.
I started in winning on the very first hand,
And I kept on winning for a while.
I had money in my pockets and money in my shoes,
And money in a great big pile.

         CHORUS
         But it's, [E]oh, Lordy, [E7]don't you see,
This [D]old stud poker be the ruin of [A]me?
You [E7]gotta get ready to shed some blood,
When the name of the game is [A]stud.

I kept on winning for an hour or more,
And the boys were feeling low.
I was lookin' like a winner and feelin' like a sinner,
And I just had their dough.
I caught a pair of aces on the very last hand,
And I bet my whole bankroll,
But Sammy had a pair of deuces on the deck,
And another deuce in the hole.

         CHORUS

You know, I lost every penny that I had in the world,
I lost my last red cent,
Now my old woman ain't talkin' to me,
And the landlord wants his rent.
I know I had it comin', and I sure enough did,
And I've only got myself to blame,
But my fingers keep itchin' and I keep on twitchin',
Just to find another poker game.
