28 Jan 05 - 02:22 AM (#1390977) Subject: UK nyckelharpas From: GUEST,Sarah From very small beginnings, the UK nyckekharpa fraternity is growing steadily. Four of us got together at Tideswell in Derbyshire a few weeks back to play for a general weekend of music and dancing on a Scandinavian theme along with other fine musicians. We will also try to get together at the Scandinavian Festival in Horton in Ribblesdale for the May Day bank holiday. For those wishing to learn (which is most of us), there is a workshop with Niklas Roswall at the Norwich international festival in March where there will also be dance workshops. Cheers Sarah |
03 Feb 11 - 02:59 AM (#3087730) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: GUEST,Jim Talbot How are nyckelharpas doing in the UK? Are there enough players for us to form some sort of group to help with sourcing parts/ repairs/ workshops/ general advice? What about a UK Nyckelharpa Association then? |
03 Feb 11 - 04:03 AM (#3087748) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: My guru always said Vicki Swann plays her Nyckelharpa at a lot of the clubs & festivals I go to. Anyone reading this thread who doesn't know what a Nyckelharpa looks like, you can see a picture of Vicki plating one on the link at the start of this post. Glad to see that this fascinating instrument has other players in the UK! |
03 Feb 11 - 05:34 AM (#3087780) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: GUEST I know of Gavin Pennycook up here in Scotland and suspect that there is at least one other player up here (making three of us). I have heard of a lassie who has played at a folk festival in Wales and that's all.....but there must be more of us (I'm guessing at least a dozen). In the same way that the dulcimer fraternity have their own players group, I was thinking about something along the same lines for we nyckelharpa players.....I'm happy to set up a website, any ideas and contacts would be appreciated. 04 Feb 11 - 02:36 AM (#3088373) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: jumbledjim Thanks for the information....I had found the ANA and a wide range of nyckelharpa websites in Scandinavia, but was more concerned about finding out about UK players, UK workshops and UK organisations (and some of the replies above have answered these points), simply from the point of not wanting to travel vast distances for first hand nyckelharpa experiences. |
04 Feb 11 - 03:30 AM (#3088386) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: open mike what i mean is that the UK players could connect thru the ANA--and it could help you keep in touch...and could lead to connections in UK! |
04 Feb 11 - 05:18 AM (#3088433) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: jumbledjim I see what you mean open mike, however, I have to say I was put off by two things with ANA....first the annual fee is way above an equivalent UK group ((I'm thinking of the Nonsuch Dulcimer Group); secondly it was effectively Paypal only and I have security issues with Paypal. Surely it would make more sense if there are now enough UK players to form an association here and then affiliate to ANA if desired by the majority? |
04 Feb 11 - 09:08 AM (#3088530) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: kitchen piper Hello! It's wonderful the nyckelharpa stuff that's going on! We already have a network to keep in touch with each other. There is the Nyckelharpa Yahoo group and also a FaceBook group and I have a website where I am assembling information. There are going to be some interesting things happening from the summer, so keep an eye on the site that I am putting together. Nyckelharpas in the UK I plan on making it a resource of information for us all here in the UK. :)) Vicki |

07 Feb 11 - 02:33 AM (#3090232) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: jumbledjim Making a Moroharpa sounds an interesting project....I'm putting wood aside at the moment to have a go at making a nyckelharpa myself, but fancy tweeking the design if at all possible to make it lighter whilst still retaining the strength necessary for the stringing. I'm growing my own wood for the project... |

07 Feb 11 - 04:58 PM (#3090695) Subject: RE: UK nyckelharpas From: jumbledjim I already have a harpa Open mike, but have just caught the "making" bug that I gather eventually gets many fiddlers and harpa players....in my own case it was the realisation that my friendly local luthier wasn't going to touch such a beast of an instrument, "you're on your own wi that ein laddie" were his words, so any repairs/improvements were going to be down to me..... |
