On a recording of the Connemara Cradle Song by Padraigin Ni Uallachain, it (liner notes) says: "Attributed to Liam Daly." Delia Murphy recorded the song in 1953. The melody used for this song is "Down in the Valley." Comments? |

Murphy. Soodlum's Irish Ballad Book doesn't attribute it at all, which is about what I would expect. Can't find it in anything else at the moment. |

Vol.47/3, 2003 (Behind the Song). I'm proud to say I helped her some with the research. In the article, the mistake of Liam Daly as the author is explained. Joe Hickerson finally found the source of the tune (Happy Home Waltz No 1, by Julien, Ca. 1850), but even he didn't know of John Francis Waller. Great recordings of the song: Tommy Makem on "The Best of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem", Padraigin Ni Uallachain on "An Irish Lullaby", and Gordon Bok on "Dear to our Island".
