Hertford Mill Stream Diverted - Dam(n)!!

Subject: Hertford Mill Stream Diverted - Dam(n)!!
From: Lanfranc

We'd just finished a pleasant, if more sparsely attended than the last, session at the Millstream when the Landlord sidled in and announced that we would not be able to use the room again, because they were going back to serving food every evening.

Oh for the days when pubs were pubs and restaurants were restaurants, and a crisp and curly cheese sandwich, a bag of crisps and a pickled egg was the only sustenance on offer at the bar!

However, within five minutes we had established our business continuity site, and, for the time being, future sessions will be held at Chauncey Court, Blue Coats Avenue, Hertford which is at the top of the map shown, opposite Tesco.

You can't keep us folkies down!

I will update the relevant page on my site within the next few days, and before the next session on 23rd February.

Alan

Oh yes I scraped out the flute repertoire barrel, as I did not take my Gitter having had a devastatingly dire day. Nice performances from Alan & his silver-tonsilled accomplice, new visitors to us.

Re the New Venue: LUXURIOUS and capacious public room, good acoustics, com-fee chairs, nice & warm & cosy , home from home, but bring yer own ale. I will supply some free booze so it will pay to be early guys!!

The silver-tonsilled accomplice was not mine, but another Alan's!

Those present were my favourite herpetologist, Eleanor, Keith who didn't travel far, Alan MkII + accomplice (Julia?), 'er indoors and me. Far from scraping the barrel, Eleanor rose to new heights on her flute.

Where two or three are gathered together...

Like I said, a very pleasant and wide-ranging evening.

More would be welcome though.

Alan

The new meeting place is not a pub. It's part of a sheltered housing complex and has wonderful acoustics. It's very comfortable, non smoking and will make a great venue.

Thanks to Carol for the opportunity.

I still want a tape of a session please!!!!

Sorry to have missed you guys Wed, but my little horse throat from Monday is increasingly turning into a streamer of a cold so the pitch was uncontrollably varied, nose was red and lips getting sore... you know the score. The things we do for folk, obviously I could have moved from the draught I was sat in at Barton but we had to be careful tripping over bodies in candelight so I didnt bother till the lights went back on.

Great to hear you've a new venue. At last, a chance to get rid of some booze acquired from parties when we were hoping to have a clear out. Will be interesting to hear if the pub does achieve its new objective.

Looking forward to the next. And yes we have some new songs learned too...

Martin it's funny you have caught the black death. My next sculpture commission for the medical museum is of a person with the Black Death. Perhaps send me jpegs of your buboes as pictures of buboes are hard to come by.
Alan thanks for the compliment. I'll miss the Millstream's Reverb effect.MK hope to see you at the next one or sooner.
Jacqui we are planning to record at a session v soon but have to get out tech sorted!

Eleanor - got a Tascam Portastudio 5 which records, then masters to MP3 files. Once I've got things sorted out (e.g. the MP3 file is a bit quiet and needs a strange codex) I could do the biz.

:-)

I'm quite glad I didn't go now or I might have felt it was my singing that scuppered things.

"A sheltered housing complex" Do you think the residents reckoned on folk music? "So you thought you were safe in here..."

Careful Martin it sounds like you're requesting a full length rendition of St Stephen....

St Steven? I know not.

Kevin's comment reminds me of the motto that hangs on our kitchen wall:

"There are few pleasures in life that it is worth forgoing in order to spend an additional six months in a nursing home!" (John Mortimer - "Rumpole of the Bailey")

I'm not personally quite ready for sheltered housing, but I suppose a bit of practice wouldn't go amiss! Just so long as we don't have to watch "Countdown".

Seriously though, Carol (my favourite herpetologiste) is hardly senile, and Jacqui C speaks well of the venue, so the main danger is if it is so comfortable and we all consume so much brought in booze that we fall asleep in the armchairs to be awakened by the startled residents the next morning.

But that's their problem ...

St Stephen is my favourite (Bring Out Your Grateful) Dead track. It dribbles on for hours & hours.

Why should they sing about St Stephen you ask?
Well, he was martyred by being stoned.

Alan - Is a herpetologist different from a Saurophile?
Maybe we could seek out songs on the theme of Saurophilia. How about The Lambton Waarm?

Hopefully not as long as the song.....about 25 mins.......

I seem to remember a song from the old days which had the line:

"Like the early martyrs, he was usually stoned!"

Can't remember who it was by, though. Hamish Imlach? ... maybe

Carol's business card names her as a member of the British Herpetological Society, and she admits to being into snakes.

"The woman that thou gavest to be with me... etc"

Maybe Carol could start a thread on Snake Songs.   (Well, there's "I'm a lumberjack" for a start. After all, you don't get many snakes with more street cred than pythons...)

Saw Carol in St Albans on Friday

This is a 'House session'

Carol is extolling the virtues of the acoustics.

Breezy, the acoustics are terrific, believe me. The building itself is part of the old Bluecoats School, with a history going back hundreds of years.

Added to that it's a two minute stagger to Hertford East station and the main Hertford bus station and that there's a 24 Hour Tescos close by just in case more supplies are needed......

Do I dare put a guitar in the hold of a plane I wonder??

Not if you really value it Eleanor. I've watched the monkeys load the hold luggage and it ain't a pretty sight, believe me. I've had a wheel broken off of a case so imagine what they could do with a guitar!

Refuse to sign the disclaimer for damage and insist on taking it to the plane yourself like they do with pushchairs and then walk it on.

works for me

The evening had a dire weather forecast (false) that may have put off out of towners, so a quiet but pleasant singaround was held.
Hertford Alan and Julia came and sang and played as a duo. The effect was lovely but there was the sad news that Julia has to go to Malaysia for a year.
Rick sang and played, good as always.
And me.

Thanks for the report Keith, it sounds like it was small but oh so select.
Yes Wednesday week!
As for that rhyme, well found. As the anatomy lecturer I should have thought of that one. I think some Aztec words could also be found. Maybe Newt would be an easier rhyme.
