11 Feb 05 - 05:11 AM (#1405564) Subject: BS: Kilts From: Davetnova I was in getting measured up for a new kilt, a super sexy black one, and I got rather an eye opener. This was a traditional Kiltmaker's shop but in addition to the usual selection of tartans tasteful and modern, and the odd kilt in Hodden grey or super sexy back, there were some even I would be wary of wearing. Utilikilts, denim kilts, camo kilts I can take, even black leather (not as super sexy as wool) but bright red PVC! Pink PVC! Makes me glad I can claim to be Welsh. |

I just enjoy wearing a kilt, even though it isn't all that traditional among the Irish. I usually don't try to wear a tartan, because my folks wouldn't. Kind of like puttin' on airs and all. Maybe a County or Irish National, but the idea of the Irish Diaspora tartan does appeal to me. But usually it is dark green or black for my tastes. I did have a first at a gig that I played recently. A woman asked the age old question, and I told her that I wear 'em commando style. Apparently she didn't believe that because a little later, as I was talking to someone else, she comes up and lifts it and looks. She let out a little "Oh....." and dropped it like it was red hot. The women was embarrassed as hell, and when I went back onstage for the next set, I was merciless. She was my foil for the rest of the night. LOL. Mick |

11 Feb 05 - 11:39 PM (#1406794) Subject: RE: BS: Kilts From: LadyJean Every year I go to the Ligonier Highland games for the scenery and I do not mean Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands. There is nothing in this world like a well formed man in a kilt. I love to watch the hammer throw. They spin around for that one, in kilts, of course. Many years ago, at an S.C.A. event, a suitably kilted Scot met a woman who asked what he was wearing under it. The Scot was fairly drunk, so he pulled up his kilt and showed her. She screamed and hid her face like she'd never seen one before. (She'd seen several.) Pleased with the reaction, when he met a foppish cavalier, he pulled his kilt up again, with a suitable whoop. The fop looked, shook his head and said, "Is that all." Now I risk being annoying, but, my freshman year in college I was dating a senior named, alas Bill Bailey. We weren't serious about each other. But several of the girls predicted our marriage, since he WAS a senior, after all. I made the mistake of telling one of them that I wanted my bridegroom to wear a kilt if I ever got married. "Does Bill know that!" she demanded. "You better tell him!" "It might be against his religion!" No, I didn't tell Bill. Neither did she. She told his sister, which was, let me assure you, infinitely worse. Of course I didn't marry Bill Bailey, or anyone else. Though the kilt thing isn't the reason why. |

Lady Hillary made [at my request] a lava lava. I got comments on my good legs. I am considering having a less formal one made for sailing, as it was very comfortable. During the evening, several women asked me the usual question--Is there anything worn under your kilt, lad? The answer, of course was--Nae, it's as good as it ever was. At the New York Boat show, I was talking with the kiltie lad who was demoing Johnnie Walker Scotch. His answer--Lipstick, if I'm lucky. |

How does poofy skirt wearer know that I am wearing dirty american jeans? How does he/she know what my national dress is without knowing my nationality? Just because my name is English, doesn't mean I'm from England! Just the same as if my name was Scot or France or China. If you try moving in a light weight one, they go everywhere. Why do you think all the non tartan ones are heavy fabrics: non-tartan wool, pvc, leather etc. Of course, if you could find 16 oz silk, it could well work... I'm just a dancer, so need to be able to move in them, but the millitary kilts, and the ones the bands wear are even heavier than normal ones. Bunnahbhain |

17 Feb 05 - 09:15 PM (#1413585) Subject: RE: BS: Kilts From: MaineDog My wife used to build kilts professionally. She always recomended 13 oz material for dancers. Sixteen is too hot, stiff, and heavy for dancing. Eleven oz is hard to work with, and it flies around too much (sorry, lassies). The kilt pin should be heavy enough to add a little control to the swing of the kilt. It does not close the kilt, but merely pins to one edge. A properly executed kwt can still be exciting, though. 08 Jul 06 - 03:45 PM (#1779014) Subject: RE: BS: Kilts From: Bunnahabhain How much does a good kilt cost? Where are you? Here in Edinburgh, a good kilt, ie one made to measure in a sensible weight tartan, will cost about £300, and you will have to wait 2-8 weeks for it, depending on time of year, and which firm you went to. I would imagine you would pay about the same, or a little more all over the UK, but they'll be harder to find. Elsewith, I know nothing more than google does... BTW, do not even think about getting one if you live within range of Scotrail. Sitting for almost 2 hours in a kilt is not comfortable at all. And the actual journey is about 5 miles as the crow flies. Grrrrr..... |
08 Jul 06 - 07:31 PM (#1779143) Subject: RE: BS: Kilts From: Teribus Micca - 14 Feb 05 - 02:21 PM Do you know why men in kilts wear a knife (Scian Dhu) down the sock? Yes Micca I do: Any member of a Clan be he Clansman or "Broken Man" of the Clan had the automatic right of audience with the Clan Chief. As assassinations were not uncommon it was considered reasonable for anyone going in to see the Clan Chief should be unarmed. But a Highlander could never be "unarmed" so he was shown into a room where he divested himself of all his weapons - with the exception of his "Skien Dhub" (Which literally translated means "Dark Knife" - "Secret Weapon") The Highlander would take this knife from its normal hiding place and put it down the top of his right stocking. In this way the Clan Chief knew where the man's only weapon was and the Highlanders right of being armed was maintained. Now at these interviews the Clan Chief sat with a drawn sword on the table and latterly a brace of cocked pistols - so God help the poor bugger who went in there to have a chat with the Clan Chief and then felt the irresistable urge to scratch his right knee. The sign of a Scot dressed in a Kilt with a Skien Dhub in the top of his right stocking is a sign of goodwill and peaceful intent. |

I think the sett was Ancient Upchuck, if that wasn't bad enough, the man wearing it was only slightly taller than he was wide. Then, to add insult to injury, when he bent over you could see his depend undergarment. It didn't QUITE put me off men in kilts. |
