Shawl in Auction - Getaway $$

Oh, pretty.... look...

According to Shawlmaster MMario, 50% will go to the Mudcat, and 50% will go to the FSGW scholarship fund.   AND you will be able to arrive at the Getaway in style!

Mmario has produced this beautiful shawl out of the kindness of his heart to be auctioned for funds for the Mudcat and the FSGW scholarship fund. I reckon that as as much to do with music as some of the other stuff above the line.

I gotta tell you, there's so much shit in the BS section that I don't even look at it anymore.

Am I missing anything?

So, if it has to do with important Mudcat or FSGW business, that bloody well is music business and belongs at the top.

Perhaps a new thread title prefix for commerce? BIZ:_________

Not much action at the auction - paid more for the yarn - than MC will get.

Next Time donate the greenbacks direct - save your wrists, save the fleece, and save the B.S.

I'm hoping that Giok gets this one - he's been outbid twice before.

These shawls are beautiful and are a great way of raising money for two good causes as well as giving immense pleasure to the recipient of the shawl and to Mmario when making it.

Long may you continue mate!

The one I "gave away" went to jeffp for his wife Bonnie, and Mudcat got a donation. (Jeff had missed an auction item he dearly wanted to give her, and mine was similar.)

It's great y'all can wear these to the Getaway, but I for one lament that the Getaway planned to be for "The Big One Everyone Shoud Attend" is still at the non-handicap-friendly location and there are still many of us that can't be there for that reason or others. I would feel unbelievably badly if a project of "all the shawls" were based on the Getaway.

BTW-- Has MMario done a Getaway workshop yet on yarn arts??? :~)

A book would be nice, but someone would have to do all the work. But a calendar-- each one who has a shawl would do the work of getting a pic done, and there'd be no printing cost....

The Getaway does seem to be the one occasion when Mudcatters from many parts can get together. I wasn't aware that this one was anything out of the ordinary. Have I missed something?

Wherever and whenever a 'shawl gathering' was held would be difficult for a large majority of 'Catters around the world. There's nothing to stop 'Catters taking their shawls to any folk gathering - there are enough all over the place to go around. I, for one, would like to see more of Mmario's work, especially since I have just taken up crocheting again after over twenty years.

However, the original request here was from two 'Catters who WILL be going to the Getaway and, if I ask nicely, there might be an outside chance of that shawl being on show - it depends upon the recipient.

Two christmases ago I sent one of MMario's pieces to Barb'ry. It was oblong and could be a table runner or a light summery shawl, and it was of a varigated white to green cotton thread. Didn't she make it over to the Getaway three years ago? I think that's why it seemed like such a good choice of gifts--since she'd already met the artist who crochetted it. Maybe this is enough of a boost to get her back across the pond, to bring her shawl (thought she might have to move the vase and the lamp off of it for a little while. . . )

And it can be handicapped friendly. I have promised to promote a golf cart for katlaughing if she attends. This has been suggested before for anyone who just can't manage the hills and dales. The unheated cabins are harder to handle for anyone at risk for colds, chills, pneumonia, etc. Maybe KoKo can be convinced to offer her services in warming a bunk or two.

I have the teal green shawl last auctioned on the 'Cat. It hangs in the kitchen and warms me when I am on the computer. The one that went to Burke was an amazing ivory cotton that measured about 2' by 5' but was as light as a spider web and folded into a tiny box. I will wear mine at the next Song Circle. MMario's shawls - another wonder we can all thank Max for.

I've got the joy of owning three shawls including the semi infamous PINK shawl from a previous Mudcat auction. The others came from a Getaway auction an ivory cotton and a wonderful large varigated in tan with reds and blues. The later goes with everything from dress up to blues jeans.

Getaway would by no means provide pictures of all the "important" (each one is important) MMario shawls, but it might make a good kick off event for beginning to get photos of them all. I love the idea of a coffee table book of women around the world with their shawls and stories tied together by a love of music and this community.

SINSULL, your offer is very generous, and I appreciate your heart. Your offer would help a lot of people. Unfortunately there are many "barriers" remaining that your kind offer doesn't cover. I find this true at so many events I attend-- a facility meets handicap regulations on paper, but it still logistically beyond what I (and many others) can manage. This event is just one more in a series of things I have not been able to do-- and I am not trying to make a mess or a big deal over it. All I said was that an "All Shawls PROJECT" (I was writing about a calendar approach) limited to Getaway participants would be personally painful to me. Hey, you know, whatever.... it used to be possible to share a feeling or an opinion in a Mudcat thread and not engender numerous defensive rejoinders. Maybe it's because I'm having a bad patch, but it sure seems like a different Mudcat these days.

Really? Were they all Ren-Faire shawls till then? I didn't know that. I do recall the shawl-- wasn't it the one Burke admired so much when you finished it at the MudGather-- she modeled it and it was so great on her, and Sinsull outbid her later and turned around and gave it to her for Crimmiss? Or am I conflating two shawls and two stories? I'm so confoozed.

(I'm sorry I got pissy. I've been having a little case of shingles, going on 4 weeks now, and I feel really crappy. Everything hurts, even stuff that doesn't need to. Having to watch things passing me by again-- I don't handle it well.)

I had no idea. I can still see you sitting in the sun crocheting away while people sang and played, with pauses when you sang. The auction threads are only searchable 265 days back, so unless Pene/Jeff goes in and looks deeper, we'll have to rely on people's memories to know who has what. Scary thought!

WYSIWYG, I know what you mean.

In fact the FSGW people who checked out alternative camps were particularly frustrated about not being able to provide a flatter, warmer camp until next year, once we realized how many new people were hoping to come this year.

Still, every year's Getaway will become the new "Big One Everyone Should Attend" if enough Mudcatters from distant areas decide to give it a try for the first time. So maybe if we're lucky, next year's Getaway will be "The Heated, Hill-Free, Accessible, Close-In Big One Everyone Should Attend" that shall be known forever after as "The First Year WYSIWYG Came to the Getaway." :-D

I'm in favor of bringing and flaunting one's Mmario shawls. (To ANY occasion where Mudcatters can meet.) But the big Mmario shawl celebration will surely include far more people than the folks who come to the Getaway!

I wasn't suggesting a shawl event. I just thought that folks might like to compare.

With regards to the potential handicap friendliness of the current location, there isn't anything that will make the bathrooms in the main building more accessible.

A book wouldn't be that difficult, if folks were able to send in thier own, good quality photos. If one set it up at www.cafepress.com it wouldn't cost anything upfront and the one who did so could buy them at cost and/or sell them publically or privately at whatever retail price they choose. They have several sizes and bindings available.

Once I get my valve job etc. I might be able to help with it. I think it would be beautiful and the next best thing to having a shawl of one's own.:-)

I am curious. How does one wear a round shawl? DO you fold it in half? I'd never seen round ones until MMario started gracing us with their beauty.

round shawls - de=pending on their size - can be folded in half - or folded along a smaller chord (I think that is the word I want - but it's appropriate anyway) the fold being the "neckline" edge.

The one my sister hi-jacked bought from the auction she folds over about 4 inches deep.

Jacqui, I was wondering about how to wear it, too. :-). My blue MM shawl is a long beautifully contoured crescent, which drapes itself naturally around my shoulders. Very different, and one reason I love it is way it falls gracefully, every single time. Couldn't think how one might wear the spiral one.

I have various shawl-type things around here, inherited from my Irish aunt and relatives in Connecticut, and they seem to naturally want to be doubled over and worn over the shoulders that way. The round shawl wouldn't need to be folded perfectly in half, but at 3/4 it would give a nice "collar" effect and drape from the shoulders.

I have an alpaca poncho that has the hole in the middle of the big square of fabric, meant to be worn over the head. But that neckline is specifically finished to be worn that way.
