Does anybody know the lyrics to Archie Fisher's "Gunsmoke And Whisky"? everywhere I look on the internet I cant find the words. It's my favourite of all his songs.

I've got the recording, but haven't taken the words down yet. How long are you prepared you wait? I must admit it's not among my favourites but maybe that's due to not really knowing what it's about. Just who is Len Partridge???

Len Partridge was active on the Edinburgh folk scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Although I'm not aware of his having made any recordings, he was a big influence on Davy Graham and Bert Jansch among others.

Oh what the hell. I like this song a lot, and Archie doesn't sing it anymore. (I know because I asked him to once.) So for anyone that wants to resurrect a fine Archie song, more power to ya.

Gunsmoke and Whisky
Archie Fisher, lyrics and music MCPS

You were the wheelman, one early morning
Dreamweavers chasing fears from the dark.
I put my head down, you talked till sunrise
*Deep her in dark eyes, leaving her mark.
I walked in sunshine, you chose the shadows
I burned and blistered, you cooled me down
Tell me your troubles, Gunsmoke and Whisky,
Guitars and old cars, next time around.

You chose the mountains, I worked the cities
Both of us asking the same things in life
Back in the old days I tried the quick way
Now in the slow days, you feel the knife.
Think of the strangers that we've seen smiling
Think of the lovers that we've seen crying
Sing all the songs that we sang to each other
Old friend and brother for you and I.

You wandered your road, I ran in circles
We've walked together too short a way.
Tell me you're happy, Gunsmoke and Whisky,
And I'll be your wheelman, just for today.
Sing for the strangers that we've seen smiling
Sing for the lovers that we've seen crying
Sing all the songs that we sang for each other
Old friend and brother, before we die
Old friend and brother, for you and I.

*The phrase in bold makes no sense but that's how it reads on the lyric sheet. I don't have a turntable set up so I can't listen to it.

The album, at least the one I have this song on, is "Sunsets I've Galloped Into". Not sure about availability, it was recorded in Canada and distributed here by Valerie Rogers (Stan and Garnet's mum).

Willie-O, the lyric sheet in my copy has 'Deep in her dark eyes leaving YOUR mark', but I'm not sure if it improves the sense.

Thanks, Willie-O, for saving me a task, and Jack for explaining about Len Partridge. (I notice I didn't explain the question: Archie says in his sleevenotes of 'Sunsets ...' that the song was written for Len Partridge.)

Song has universal appeal, I think, because who of us middle-aged types doesn't have an old friend who took a different lifestyle path, musically, geographically, politically or whatever? I know who I think of. I just received a communique from him in Belize in fact, going to pick him up at the airport next month on a brief run-through.

Did original GUEST get this? Refreshing just in case.

Cool

Thanks fer reminding me of this gem...

Man, I miss my Archie Fisher cassette tapes... Guess I'll have to track Garnet Rogers down, and re-get 'em on CD!

*walks away singing*
"Meeeeerrrry England, though your heart is warm your hands are cold
And I'd like to think I'm growing up
As well as growing old...."

What great lyrics...

Thats funny...I decided today to finally learn this song well enough to perform it, maybe even tonight. So I went looking for the lyrics...hell Im sixty years old, I dont have a clue what I posted anywhere ten or fifteen years ago!
Its become all the more poignant, since the friend whom I associate with this song died unexpectedly, heart attack aged 51, a couple of years after I posted the lyrics above.
