01 Mar 05 - 02:53 PM (#1424123) Subject: Robert Sims, Anyone? From: wysiwyg Robert Sims is a Chicago-based baritone who was in our church last night presenting a community concert, nearly all of it African American spirituals. I came home with a DVD and 2 CDs and was really impressed-- repertore, singing skill, stage presence, knowledge of the genre, and really NICE to deal with. Anyone else around here heard him? I'll review the CDs and DVD, and the concert too, soon! ANd BTW-- a DVD from concert appearances-- what a great item for a press kit!!!!!!!!! ~Susan |

Did You Hear When Jesus Rose? 3. Don't Ya Let Nobody Turn You 'Round 4. 'Tis the Gift to be Simple (Shaker) 5. He's Got the Whole World in His Hands 6. Is There Anybody Here Who Loves My Jesus? He's Got Spirit ArtbeaT chicago-- PBS interview with song clips from recitals Robert Sims shares how he learned about spirituals, his training and repertoire, why he chose to give spirituals a special focus, codes in spirituals, music that flowed from the spirituals, and his joy at producing his first CD. Songs excerpted in recital include: 1. Glory, Glory, Hallelujah 2. Pity A Po' Boy 3. Little Boy (how old are you?) 4. Steal Away 5. Did You Hear When Jesus Rose? 6. I'm Going Home On Mornin' Train (Get Right Church) Robert Sims in Recital European art songs, opera, and oratorio. Spirituals in Recital 1. Here's One (Talk About a Child That Do Love Jesus) 2. I'm Going Down to the River (IMO either composed vs. spiritual, or a code/escape song) 3. He Never Said a Mumberlin' Word 4. Wait 'Til I Put On My Crown ==================================================================== Sims has an uncanny ability to change characters with just a slight shift in body language, as he passes these songs to us in present time. When he performed for us (and watching this DVD), I could see the men and women who originally sang these, pouring all their hopes and thoughts into the music in layer underneath layer of meaning. As most of you Mudcatters who know me are aware, my songleading band specializes in getting people to sing along, so we've tended to choose the call/response spirituals, and frequently our sources have been people singing, folk-style, in groups. Till now, I think I've unintentionally discounted the authenticity of art-song-style performance of spirituals, lumping them in, unexamined, with heavily-textured choral arrangements. Well, I was wrong. Never mind the orchestra, the piano, the careful diction, the muscular/operatic voice production-- this is a GREAT way to bring to life, the heart that was in the songs as individuals first created and shared them in slave times. Robert Sims lifts this music up from its beginnings with great care, and puts it where it belongs, as much as it belongs in the throats of folk like us. ~Susan |
