Obit: RIP Inez Toney

To the sorrow of the boys of Oak Ash & Thorn our friend Inez Toney has died.

Let Inez stand for all of those dear folks who support traditional music. For thirty years Inez faithfully attended our shows. We watched her son grow up in the front row. Quite apart from our influence he's a fine man.

Spare a kind thought for our friend and those like her who come to hear our kind of music, tell their friends about it, and help us keep it alive.

We'll sing at her memorial service tomorrow. Send a song in her direction tomorrow, if you will.

Fear no more the heat of the sun....

Thanks for the word Dave.
She had been a stalwart of the Hyde St Pier Chantey sings, too.
We'll miss her.   I always loved that she wore her "work" name
tag to the folkie events !

Sad news, Dave, but thank you for posting it here. Inez was an old and much-loved friend of mine as well. My heart goes out to Kevin, and to everyone whose life she touched.

The work name tag that RiGGy mentions was her Tupperware tag. Inez was a Tupperware lady for many, many years and very good at it. At her request her ashes will be kept in a Tupperware container.

Just as I was drifting off to sleep last night, I had a vision of Inez being stopped at the gates of Heaven and asked to relinquish her ubiquitous tape recorder. Then, I saw the joyous look on her face as she was handed a golden harp and, freed from all earthly limitations, invited to start making music for the folks up there instead of merely listening to it. Imagine all the songs she is spreading around up yonder!

As Riggy mentioned, she and Kevin were longtime denizens of the SF chantey sings. Inez was a grteat supporter of her son's musical life, as well as being interested in it herself. This last Saturday's chantey sing was in her honor. We had a moment of silence for her, and then, of course, songs. Her gentle presence will be missed.

I've been told that the best way to guage someone's life is to look at what they've left behind them and to judge it by their own values.
I don't really know Inez, and I've only had scattered conversations with her son. But I know that he is a pleasant well meaning fellow who seems to be following in her footsteps. In that alone can't any parent take pride?
Even moreso, can't Kevin's constant support of the tradition and its performers be seen as a gift she has set up in perpetuity, without even trying - just out of love.
Now add to that everything she has put her mind to, and accomplised.

I don't know what those things are, but she's already ahead of the curve.

My sincere sympathy to her son. I hope to see him and his mini CD out and about again soon.

Dave, I wanted to thank you and Doug and Tom again, for singing at the memorial. I'm sure she enjoyed it as much as we did.

To everyone here, thank you for your kind sentiments.

I know that many people don't know me, as Kevin is the one who was usually the person who was with our mom. I am Kevin's older sister, and Inez's daughter, Joy.
I didn't get to attend the Shanty sings with them, as I was usually working or busy with some Ren. or Dickens Faire/Fair sort of thing. I hope to be able to attend some Shanty sings in the future.
Hopefully I will get to meet some (-if not all-) of you folks in the future, as well. (The folks I don't already know, that is.)

About her Tupperware name tag. She wore it *Everywhere!* Well, except in the shower and in bed. She was a very loyal Tupperware "Consultant" for more than 40 years. (It used to be "Dealer", but...)

Be well, Joy Toney (a.k.a. SilverUnicorn)
