Without seeing Hayes' version it would be hard to say how much adaptation occurred at what point between Allen's times and the version I heard sung in concert recently. I believe the Allen version is most likely a fragment of the "original," and that the repeat marks were left out, as is the case in a few of the Allen transcriptions-- tho the introductory notes indicate nearly every song had what we would think of as an A part and a B part, both repeating. Hayes seems to stand (in time and culture) at the crossroad where the spiritual was a remembered folk song passed on orally, and where it began to be an "art" song. I'm still discovering him, so I may be all wet, but I regret not finding him till recently! Thanks again, Masato. ~Susan |
