music notation software

I am looking for a simple music notation software system (preferably freeware or cheap). The problem is that I don't realy know what I am looking for I have bought several programs in the past and tried the demos of mag cover disks, but they don't do what we want. What I am looking for is a program that will allow me to feed in music either by keyboard or midi keyboard but one that doesn't self correct, put in rests, ect. and will then let me play it back, correct it and save it in midi format.Any ideas?

I not sure if this is exactly what you want but I did recommend this one to a friend (mainly because it was shareware) and he was very pleased. It's called Noteworthy and you can find it here, amongst other things. HERE

I recently bought a programme called MusicTime Deluxe from Passport Deluxe. It is a light version of a programme called Encore, and would appear to do all the things you want. It costs about $100.00 Canadian, which is a lot cheaper than the $400.00 asked for the full version of Encore.

I haven't checked to see if it is available on the Web.

I like Noteworthy Composer myself. You can do quite a bit with the unregistered version, but a lot more if you pay the registration fee of $40 US. I think Dick and Max are working on getting us a freeware program from a different company, so you may want to wait a bit before paying registration for Noteworthy.

I've used Noteworthy (unregistered only) and it's pretty good. I just donwloaded "TablEdit" from ZDnet today. So far it looks OK. It allows you to mix & match standard notation and tab. I really haven't looked at the documentation yet, so I've just been "winging" it. It's reasonably intuitive but I'll post back once I've had a chance to try it a bit more. It looks like it might be able to export midi text files also.
Joe - I assume Dick & Max will post something about the software they're looking into???

My vote goes to Noteworthy. I havn't used the midi input function yet, but I have manually enter music and transposed and printed,It will print scores from midi files, and much more. You can even add lyrics easily! It is also very userfriendly, a bonus for any music writing program! I'd say check it out!

Thanks Joe. I downloaded the trial version of MusicEase. I'll try it out. Maybe I can kill two or three birds with one stone; I'll try writing the TAB for Robert Johnson's 'Dust My Broom'. That way I can answer that thread and also post it to the Tune Post Contest.

Music time from Passport Designs has gone out of business. They were not very responsive to start with so, don't worry about it.

I have used it and it's O.K. but had bugs.
