Folklore: Blue

Blue seems to crop up in the names of (British) folk songs/tunes more than any other colour (apart from perhaps black). Is there some hidden meaning to blue that I don't know or is it that blue was just an easy dye to produce so was used alot (woad?).

Is blue as popular in other European traditions or in other cultures further afield?

Maybe the color "blue" was used so often because its easy to rhyme. ['you', 'too', 'shoe', 'who' etc.]
