Although I generally prefer to sing and pick standing up, I'm starting to think that a good high bar/pub stool might be more appropriate and relaxing for certain situations and lo-o-ong gigs. What do you Mudcatters use - I'm looking at 29 - 30 inch heights, with good sturdy rungs to rest one foot on. Any other tips? |

From: JohnInKansas We're not performers, but we carry a half dozen "pickin stools" when we go out, since most portable chairs/seats have arms that get in the way. The ones we use are short "sit-down" ones, but the same style comes in a "bar length" about the height you want. Tube steel frame, and the "seat" folds down flat to make for pretty compact stowage. A nice feature on these is that the seat latches in place when you set them up, so they don't fold up with you on them. The ones we use came from - dare I say it - Wally World, for about $10 (US) each. We got the wooden tops, since they're interchangeably useful as small camp tables; but they come at about the same price with padded seats. (Padded seats in camo cloth are common at "sporting goods" outlets here, in the short version.) I think the taller ones were something like $18 or so the last time I saw them. Similar styles in all-wood construction are fairly common, but are usually significantly heavier to pack around. For the taller ones, if you give up foldability there doesn't seem to be much difference in what's at quite a few sellers. John |

From: Leadfingers Les B - When I was doing a lot of solo pub gigs a while back I very nearly bought a wooden IKEA jobbie (thats a neat way not to say 'stool') that folded flat for transportation ! Never actually got round to it ! One day , perhaps cos I would rather sit , fairly HIGH up , than stand . |

The stool originally served as a bar stool in a bar called the "Log Cabin Bar". The bar burned down around 35 years ago and the stool was one of the things that survived the fire. The bar was owned by the father of one of my friends. After he passed away his son gave me the stool because he liked the song and it reminded him of the Log Cabin Bar. It was originally chrome plated with a red seat. Over the years it began to show its age. A couple of years back I installed a platform for my feet and painted it black with a ring of shamrocks just below the seat. It's a real beauty now and several people have taken pictures with or without me perched on the green checkered seat. Cap't Bob |

I don't use it much because it's as uncomfortable now as it was then (and I've got more padding now!), but it's useful for storing piles of stuff on, and for people at the house sessions we occasionally have. I am 6-1 and do wish they were a tad taller. Someone else mentioned a milking stool, and some of these have three legs. I can offer a caution here, based on personal experience: In what seems another lifetime ago, the late sixties, I was a copywriter with a Milwaukee ad agency and a part of Johnsons Wax was one of our accounts. That company is headquartered -- or was then -- in a modern-looking building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.Wright also designed the desks and chairs that were in use inside. A couple of us from the agency went down there one day to talk to a few of the bigwigs. Being the most junior person there, I, of course, got the chair the guy whose office it was pulled out of the corner. I noticed it had three legs, while the chairs for the others all had four. The guy started saying "Be caref--" and I was on the floor faster than if tehre had been no chair there at all. Brilliant as he was, Wright had designed the thing so that there were two legs in the rear, like any four-legged chair, but with the third leg in the center of the front with a squared-out seat. I did manage to sit on the thing, but it was legs apart and both feet on the floor. I understood why the guy kept this chair in the corner. I didn't understand why the company kept them around at all, unless it was their sense of humor. So my caution is -- if you see anything with three legs, try it every which way. |

But for singing in folk clubs I often turn a chair round and sort of half perch with my bum on the back of the chair. What this does is allow a fairly proper posture for lungs and breathing with a removal of half the weight on my legs. Adrenaline makes yer legs quiver and this is a way of reducing the effect. And there is enough adrenaline in public performances to kill the pain of an abscess for the duration of a song, I speak from personal experience. |
