I'm looking for the lyrics to "Johnney Has Gone for A Soldier" This is civil war in origina (at least as far as I know anyway). Ken Burns used it on the soundtrack for The Civil War he did for PBS. Ring a bell with anyone?

Thanks

Is also known as "Shule Aroon". Peter,Paul and Mary also did it as "Gone the Rainbow".

GONE THE RAINBOW
(Peter, Paul and Mary)

Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill
Who could blame me cry my fill
Every tear would turn a mill
Johnny's gone for a soldier.

I sold my flax, I sold my wheel,
To buy my love a sword of steel,
So it in battle he might wield,
Johnny's gone for a soldier.

Chorus: Shule, shule, shule aroo.
Shule a rack shack, shule a baba coo
When I saw my Sally Bally Beel
Come bibble in the bush -I -lor-ee

Oh my baby, oh my love
Gone the rainbow, gone the dove,
Your father was my only love,
Johnny's gone for a soldier.

It's also in the database in an earlier version as Shule aroon. Clannad did it on their album Clannad2. Catfeet

James Taylor and Mark O'connor had recorded that song. Very fine version. The text is just changed a bit: "she" instead of "I".

Buttermilk Hill version dates back to American Revolution. Shule Agra is older.

What evidence is there for the existence of the Buttermilk Hill version at the time of the American Revolution?
