It is a free download and displays the words while the midi file is playing. It darkens the particular word that is being sung during each note of the song. It is a lot of fun. I am now in the process of putting together lyrics and midis for different folk songs. By displaying the lyrics on a monitor during a performance, it will facilitate the audience singing along with me. I think that this is the best innovation that has come along in the recent past. Mapping two or more verses onto a tune repeat is possible, but not yet implemented, so you have to copy out the melody for each verse you need. This should only be a copy and paste job though. HARMONY can also produce KARAOKE files in which the CHORDS are displayed instead of the words - to play along with tunes. Download a trial copy from my site www.greenhedges.com |

You would just assign the words to rests instead of notes. Of course, the singer would have to keep to the tempo of the file. BTW It is not clear whether abc officially allows aligned lyrics on rests. Some software packages allow it (including HARMONY) , and some don't. If not, then you would have to put notes in , and mute them on playback. This can probably be done by sequencers, and the resulting file saved. |

Also just remembering a session at the Rochester Sweeps a few years back in whatever that pub is at the top of the High Street. A girl wandered in by accident and, being more than somewhat inebriated, offered to sing a song. Can't remember what it was, but it was something pop, but she was staggered to find three quarters of the room accompanying her. And I don't think any of us had ever played it before. (Can remember walking back to the campsite, with a bodhran hanging on the instrument bag on my back, and some girl walking behind me playing it. No idea who the hell she was. Slightly worried when we passed some police, but they didn't seem worried. Didn't follow me all the way back, though. Pity.) |

This was my first experience of viewing this 'spectator sport' and the Folkie friends (no names) I was visiting were persuaded to join in the fun - and I have the photos to prove it. As it was a pub in Wales, as you can imagine, the standard of singing was excellent! Not being a fan of karaoke myself, out of curiousity, I flicked through the 'catalogue' of songs to sing . I was very surprised to find the following titles listed under 'Traditional' and available: When your old wedding ring was new 7 Drunken Nights Bunch of Thyme Carrickfergus Frosty the Snowman Muirshen Duirken My Grandfather's Clock Pal of my Cradle Days and also these other 'classics': Right Said Fred - Bernard Cribbins Nellie the Elephant - Toy Dolls Lily the Pink - The Scaffold Combine Harvester - The Wurzels On the Trail of the Lonesome Pine - Laurel & Hardy The Wombling Song - The Wombles As you can imagine I was astonished - What a collection the organiser had!!! And what's more, he had a fine collection of Seth Lakeman songs ready to go too. Totally surreal..... Good pub & good beer too - not to mention a free minibus service that'll pick you up 15 miles away. Fantastic! |
