If the stones were made of clay and the brooms were shotguns, Rap?

Any non-Canadian contenders? (For that matter, any non-Canadian soectators?)

This is probably as much of a "world" championship as baseball's "World Series."

Nah. Curling is a bunch of guys sliding rocks down the ice, trying to knock the other guy's rock away. A bunch of other guys with brooms sweep like crazy before the sliding rock.

Hell, I did that when I was 6 years old. We'd skid rocks down the street in the winter, trying to miss Old Man Higgins' car.

Perhaps poeple who grow their fingernails until they reach several feet & they curl all over the place should be the winners.

Non-Canuck contenders? Gee, I'd say all the other teams, if I had to guess. BTW, USA is in third place at the moment.

PoppaGator... the World Series of baseball... didn't a Canuck team win that twice? Perhaps you are thinking about the World Championship "Superbowl" of US football, which is a game only played in the USA?

Now, if you want REAL sports thrills on ice, try Quahice.

Three teams each defend a goal set on the ground, the playing area being in a "Y" shape. A guy called the "hurler" shoves a smooth rock weighing not less than 14 stone across ice that is impregnated with dirt, pebbles, sticks and other debris. Three other guys fly in front of the rock on brooms, blowing whatever they can from in front of the rock's path, including other rocks. Now, each hurler slides his rock at the same time (at the sound of a starter's pistol), and the "blowers" from each team try to deflect the other teams' rocks, clear the ice, and give momentum or steer their own rock at the same time.

The winning team has to buy copious quantities of GOOD beer or suffer the loss of their innocence.

A town near here, Waltham, Illinois (USA) has always been a place where curling is taken quite seriously. (FOR REAL)

-----------------------------------------------------------

A friend of mine from there and his girlfriend used to participate in this sport because her parents used to watch the two of them so terribly close that this was the only way they could figure out to sweep together.

I hear that the off-road version of Curlingis quite exciting. No brooms. Just sledge hammers. The idea is to Pound the large stones of the other team into powder so that your stones may continue on down the rather short course---. It's only 5 feet long. Pretty frantic action though. Many broken toes. And guys are being hauled to the hospital one after the other----------in toe trucks.

I could get interested if they showed more of it. It looks like a sport that I would like to watch: slow, tactical, with a lot of suspense.

But the usual German coverage is once every few years (during the Olympics) a few minutes per day. I've looked today in my newspaper: 4 lines of uncomplete results.

And I've looked now in the teletext: German men reaching semifinal was the number 37 reported of the sports news and that was on a day on which nearly nothing happened in sports.

As a guess I'd say they'll bring 10 minutes of a final with Germany in it during the routine sports TV show.

RATS! I decided to nap before the big Canada vs. Norway game last night as I figured it would go past my regular bedtime. Somehow, my wristwatch alarm did not wake me. I was wakened by the phone. My buddy, excitedly : "Wow! Have you ever seen a game like that in your life?!" RATS... SOB! I will not miss Canada vs. Germany today. I will not miss Canada vs. Germany today. I will...

To the Scots, congrats on an excellent week. Good luck in the final.

I am sure that the world of Curling looks at folk singers with an envious eye.

"...ah, if only we could be as appealing to the masses as folkies. Now there's real celebrity for you!"

gnu,
The Norway vs Canada game was fantastic! Sorry you missed it.
The Ferby team has truly been lucky. It was hard to believe it when Andy Kapp also choked with his last rock, Saturday, in the semifinal. I felt badly for Andy, with the entire game being televised in Germany.

I hope you remembered to set your watch for the Sunday Final? It promises to be well worth watching.

Well, Andy did choke, but the pressure seemd to be getting to him. When you show negative emotion the way he did, beginning in the first end, it's only a matter of time. If Dave had been on his game, it would have happened much earlier. Andy could stand a little sports psychology coaching, or a few beers with Randy and the lads.

I really did feel bad for Paul, though. Talk about a poor time to slip and lose your balance! Of course, I wouldn't let him have a "do-over". And besides, he's proven himself one of the best in the world many times. He's a gem to watch.

So, today it's up against the inventors of the game eh. Acchh (spg) lads, bring on yer best!

What curling needs is a Curling Alliance. That will alianate those who are traditional from all the ones wanting it to be a true capitalist business, including agents, managers, personal coaches, a no reserve clause in any contract and multi-million dollar remunerations for them that has the swiftest brooms of all. Scandals will develop when brooms are found to be fitted with ice forming and melting devices that increace or decrease slideability of the stones.

And steroids will play a role as well.

Two five enders! What a game!

Unfortunately, I have a bone to pick. Regarding what I said above about Paul, after seeing his interview today, fuck him and the white horse he rode in on. You got beat, you pussy. Deal with it. Regarding his comments on the Olympics, just because Paul Martin missed that draw by inches doesn't make you a true champion.... humility might be a start. You are good, but not that good that you can rest your crown on the mishaps of others. If that's YOUR game, Ferby's ahead... well ahead. And only because you can't stand the pressure.

Back to the actual game. Scotland should be very proud of this rookie. He and his team played well throughout the tournament - actually, the best, until the final. They will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Brucie. No ice for the Scots? But, I thought the Scots were "neat" anyway, no?

Anyway, there ain't no "neat" at the Moncton Curling Culb tonight. Wish I was there. I talked to a buddy of mine who was at the club for the game and he said the crowd was wild. Even the Scot supporters, many wearing kilts, were in applause at the five-enders. No matter where you're from, it was a hell of a tournament.
