John, most British people think they are not in Europe (they say "We are going to Europe" when they cross the Channel) - but we still had a EuroGathering in 'ull ;-)

skarpi, the tradition of the EuroGatherings is that they are on the first weekend of May (1st of May is a public holiday in Germany, 1st Monday in May is a bank holiday in UK - which makes it easier for many of us).
Let's see what Letty says about Cork 2006 ...

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown
From: mooman

Dear EuroGatherers,

Let's start getting down to some serious organization now!

Tentative programme

Friday 29 April

- c.12h00-13h00 mooman and Mrs Moo will arrive at La Garenne. It could be that some of you will already arrived.

- Later that afternoon/evening. I will be available to collect those who need it from Niort railway station. It will be helpful, therefore, (if you haven't already done so) let me know if you need collecting and your approximate time of arrival)

- Evening. Informal music-making and everyone is free to choose what they want to do and where they want to eat. There should be barbeque facilities available at La Garenne for those who want to avail of them.

Saturday 30 April

- Morning. Nothing special planned. There is a market at La Rochelle for those interested and a couple of worthwhile things to see more locally (I'll post more details of those soon).

- Afternoon. Probably at around 14h30-15h00 we will have the "traditional" EuroGathering Outing. This year it will comprise a trip by punt(s) around the local "Venise Verte" canal system, probably from a village called Arcais. Instruments welcome (but don't drop them in the drink). Especially the aerophone for "Le Canal en Avril"! The punt(s) will conveniently return to outside a nice cafe where beverages may/will be taken!

- Evening: 20h00 The usual EuroGathering musical evening will take place at:

Hôtel Restaurant LA BOSSELLE
5, rue de la Garnauderie
85420 DAMVIX
Tél. +33 (0)2 51 87 13 11

where, conveniently, some of you are staying. Food (including crudites, a barbeque, aperitives, etc.) will be provided for the measly sum of €15 by the lady who runs La Bosselle (who is excited and pleased to have us there!). I know that word has been spread around and I will send her some posters too, so there should be a good ambience and maybe one or two local musicians.

Sunday 1 May

- Free morning to do whatever you like! (Sore heads?)

- Lunchtime. Mrs Moo has undertaken (and may be assisted by the able Andy) to make a big pot of something tasty at La Garenne. This will be followed during the rest of the day by informal music, chat, football or whatever else you want to do (impromptu arrangements of course are possible throughout the weekend!)

Monday 2 May

- after breakfast (naturally) and sad farewells, the great dispersal will take place over the course of the day. This, naturally, only after picking the victim (who may or may not be present) for the 2006 EuroGathering!

Some other practical details

This is what I understand (at present) of attendance and peoples' arrangements. Please let me know if it needs correcting or filling in:

mooman La Garenne (LG)
LadyMcMoo LG
MudGuard LG
Wolfgang LG
Susanne (skw) LG (in car?)
Skipjack K8 La Bosselle (LB)
Wilfried Schaum to advise please!
John 'Giok' MacKenzie + Liz LG (in camper van)
Doug Chadwick to advise please!
Kate LG (camping? to advise please
JeZeBeL LG (as above - to advise please!
Charmion LB
CET LB
Letty? are you coming m'dear?!
Shrek? same as Letty!
Judy T? I will check - will camp at LG if comes
Oaklet?? Hope you can come!
Hassan (friend of Mudcat) LB
Magali (friend of Mudcat and judge of the "grenouille" pronounciation competition (which is still wide open!)) - no francophones allowed please! LB

Our good hosts the Jerram family will of course be at La Garenne and the neighbours there will certainly join us.

The swimming pool may or may not be open (this depends on whether the tilers have started retiling it and is not a British Rail announcement!).

Good local wine will be available at €2/litre (it comes in 5 litre containers). Red, white or rose. Please let me know in advance what you want and it will be purchased for you!

OK...I think that's enough for one post. Maps and other details to be posted shortly!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Ricardo (aka Richard aka mooman)

P.S. I bet I've b******d some of the HTML up here!

As I said in the last thread, I'll be coming by car and bringing my tent, so it's La Garenne for me. I'm not sure what time I'll be arriving, but I'd be happy to offer transport once I get there if required.

Is La Bosselle walkable from La Garenne ? I'd prefer not to miss out on good wine for the sake of driving a car.

Charmion and I are both singers. Charmion plays guitar, and has been working hard on the mandolin since last summer.

Bad news and good news

Bad News: The Vin en Vrac supplier cannot supply 5 litre containers for the €2/litre wine. If you want your very own personal 5 litres will will need youe own receptacle.

Good News 1: Emergency measures have been put into place at La Garenne put ensure an adequate supply of the nutient liquid concerned for Friday and to provide a solution while some of the world's top researchers seek a permanent solution.

Good News 2: The BBC long range forecast for the La Rochelle region predicts sunshine (25oC) on Friday and sunshine (27oC) on Saturday!

Good News 2 The swimming pool will be open so you can bring your swimmeroonies if you want to. It may not have heated up fully but Saturday is forecast for 27C...

Good News 3 There will be some basis vegetarian food available on Friday evening. If you want to barbecue your own though, that is also possible. Croissants and French bread have been ordered for Saturday morning.

Good News 4 Two punts have been ordered for Saturday 16h00. We have one barcadero but will need to elect the other from amongst our ranks. I can do it but propose strongman Andy for the job...!

Well, what a trip that was, like clockwork, apart from the interstate highway that isn't on any maps yet. Thee hours from Calais to the eastern side of Paris central, dropped off young people with Uncle Iain, then four and a half hours down to La Garenne, 750 miles in a day, and seventeen hours in the saddle.

Can't really remember my name today, as it was 3am arrival and to bed, but we've done coffe, croissants and tunes this morning. That's enough from me, I'll try and get all gathered to do a bit.

MudGuard speaking:
So far it is a great weekend, though the location is a bit - let's say - remote (it took me 8 different means of transport to get here: tramway, subway, suburban, plane, regional train, metro, train, car)

Good music, a beautiful house, wonderful hosts, good friends, good food, good wine, great wheather (sunshine, 22 degrees in the shade)

Got to stop, other people queueing ...

Charmion here --
We are comfortably established in a little hotel where Monsieur et Madame feed us like fighting cocks and the coffee is from heaven. It feels like summer here (they were threatening snow when we left Ottawa on 23 April) and the garden at La Garenne is in bloom, with the resident thrushes and blackbirds competing with the Mudcats conducting their first session before lunch. We will have to leave sometime soon, but I won't think about that now.

Susanne here --
Temperature has gone up to 27 degrees in the paddock where the cars are. 13 hours of driving have landed us in the middle of a beautiful summer. I don't want to go back up north, but stay - pampered by our generous hosts Jill and Roger, partaking of the bread and cheese provided by Pat and Richard (mr & mrs Moo), with skipjack playing the piano in the background, as he is doing just now, or somebody else doing some music. It's right up there with the rest of the memorable Eurogatherings so far!

Giok the hot now, I just hate it here, food wine music; no dancing girls though, still the weekend is young and I wish I was too. Interesting to put faces to names, some people are like you would think they'd be while others confound all my preconceptions. Anyway there is a large German waiting to add a few pearls of wisdom, and he's too big to argue with. Wish you were here, particularly those who wanted to come but were prevented by conferences, and cash flow.
Giok

Wolfgang's bit
It's summer here at the end of April, a beautiful place. With all that hot air, even in the evening, and the local red wine, people get the most funny ideas, like me for instance singing for the first time a solo in all Mudcat meetings that heve been and I've been at all yet (like Greg, Andy and Richard). It was a thirteen hour drive down here, which is a bit crazy for a weekend, but not so much when thinking about all the good friends to meet and the music.
Wolfgang

Sunshine, good food, geat company and music: what more could you ask? Don't you wish you were here?
It's a good job that it's not raining 'cos I'm sleeping in a tent. On the way down I paid for a hotel room - I could have slept anywhere but I needed somewhere secure for my instruments while I was out sightseeing. It comes to something when musical instruments get a higher priority than me!

Doug C

Yep...second (or third or fourth of fifth all of the above! Temperature up to a nice 29C now. Lovely location, music in the open barn until the wee hours, night animals craoking and calling and the milky way above. What could be better with good music and good friends. Off in a moment to upend the lot of them in the canal!

Peace

moo

Arrived back home half an hour ago (2.52am on May 2). We set out from La Garenne (with sincere regrets) a quarter past lunchtime (sans lunch). It being a Sunday the roads were empty, even circling Paris went like clockwork. Dropped Wolfgang off at Muenster at 11pm (but still 24 degrees!) and decided to push on, being wide awake. Was able to watch a beautiful thunderstorm between 1.30pm and 2.45 pm. Sometimes the light almost blinded me. Anyway, temp had been dropping for some time, it started to rain at 2.40, and at 2.50 I noticed a certain sleepiness. Got home safely, if distinctly cold (14 degrees outside ...), made a dash for the door in the pouring rain and will now be off to bed. Safe journey again to all other travelling Mudcatters (and honorary Mudcatters). This weekend was definitely worth driving 3011 kilometres to!

Susanne,
that must have been a record breaking speed from Muenster to Kiel! Tell me about all the speeding tickets you get and send me the ones from my legs.

A heartfelt thankyou to our hosts, Jill and Roger. They were not responsible for the splendid weather but they made what they could that we could enjoy it. And a thankyou to Richard and Pat for their part in the oragnisation.

Letty,
I've good news and bad news for you. The good news is that next time the Mudcat gathering will be so close to your place that you easily will be able attend. The bad news is that it will be in Cork and we expect the local Mudcatters to organise it. You can still object but you are outvoted.

Seriously, Letty, of course you can say no thanks, but planning next year in Ireland has a distinct advantage: All the British Mudcatters have a bank holiday at the start of May, the German Mudcatters don't have one (that means that for instance Susanne did drive 32 hours to be in Niort from Friday evening to Sunday morning). But next year, the first of May is on a Monday that means that German Mudcatters have a long weekend which makes the thought to fly over to Ireland much more attractive.

Thanks to everyone involved in this weekend - it was great!
On the RichterEurogather-scale it was definitely a Niort 9 ;-)

Special thanks go to

Jill and Roger for hosting the meeting at La Garenne and for an endless supply of tea, coffee, food, whatever else was needed,

Richard and Pat for organizing the meeting (and food and drinks ...),

the musicians for lots of wonderful tunes and songs,

the birds (including hoopoes, sparrows, blue tits, great tits, yellow hammers, nightingales, starlings, red starts, robins, chaffinches, green finches, gold finches, swallows, house martins, sky larks, wrens, blackbirds, field fares, song thrushes, black caps, white wigtails and some more I don't remember or could not identify) and les grenouilles (frogs) for their concertos

les voisins (the neighbours) for enduring our late-night/early morning sessions

I had an idea how we could show our gratitude to Jill and Roger:
let's send picture postcards to them with pictures from the place where you live. My Munich postcard will be on its way when I go to the post office later this morning.
If all participants do that, Jill and Roger will have a nice collection ...

If you need the address, send me a PM (I don't want to post it here publicly)

I will start processing my photos this afternoon, so I hope I can send them to Jeff tonight.

So did I.
What a wonderful time to meet some new people, esp. Canadians serenading the cows, and an unkilted Scot with a mighty voice.
Besides the music I learned a lot about European and Transatlantic history.
For some decades ago I eard a cuckoo, now again, and if I might believe his oracle I hope to outlive you all.

No speeding tickets for me, I'm sure. It just happened that the motorway was fairly empty between 11.30 and 3am on a Sunday night.

Andy, a PM with the La Garenne address, please!

A lot has been said about this Eurogathering which deserves to be called 'Small but beautiful', but I feel there hasn't been much mention of music so far. Sitting outside in the open barn till after midnight, strumming and humming a little, is one thing. What we didn't realise was that the Saturday night bash at the restaurant at Damvix (sorry, forgot its name) was a) open air and b) most public. There was an audience of fifty or so, all come to partake of the buffet barbecue (barbecue buffet?) accompanied by Mudcat music. Richard and Greg bore the brunt of this, ably supported by Doug, Edmund & Charmion, Giok, Pat singing a couple of her fine songs, and Wilfried who was brave enough to sing a German soldier's song in front of a (very) French audience. I chickened out - the general mood seemed to me not in favour of an a cappella song in a strange language and feeble voice. We all (I think) admired Charmion for getting up and doing an a cappella number during a very lively phase of audience participation. By the end, they were all listening.

There was some dancing, too. I never managed to work out what my partner was dancing (a feeling probably reciprocated by him ...), but it was nice to be asked. And before that night I'd assumed that 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken' was a mournful, reflective number, not a dance tune. Greg, please don't do that again!

Some local performers joined in on the drums and the singing, which made for a happy end to the proceedings around 11pm. So, thanks too to the landlady and landlord who seemed to enjoy the night as much as their guests.

WOW !

What a weekend !!!

Just got back (10.30 a.m., Wednesday). A late start from La Garrenne and a bit of sightseeing at La Rochelle, meant an overnight stop sleeping in the car in a lay-by rather than finding proper accommodation but I recovered well enough on the overnight ferry.

Those of you who had to leave to catch boats, trains and the like, missed a very special moment right at the end when Richard, on mandola, Giok, on guitar, and myself, on concertina, gave an impromptu performance as strolling minstrels to serenade the grandmother outside the neighbours' house.

There have been lots of mentions of the sunny weather but not of the fact that it was warm enough to swim in the outdoor, unheated pool on May Day. There were, however, only four of us brave enough to try it.

This year's Eurogathering scored on every point, with the chance to meet and make friends, both old and new, lots of music and beautiful surroundings The whole weekend was fun although I think an opportunity was missed when Greg stubbornly refused to get his pole stuck and fall in the water while punting us round the canals of La Petite Venice Verte.

Our hosts, Jill and Roger, couldn't have made us feel more welcome. My thanks to them and to Richard and Pat for all their hard work organising the event.

I'm already looking forward to next year in Cork

Ace set of photos Andy!

They capture the atmosphere perfectly and you have more or less everything that I took (except the "ghost punt" attack a la Master and Commander!) so I don't need to bother Jeff with more photos.

More reflections from me later but, in the meantime, thanks to everybody for a brill weekend!

Peace

Richard (aka Ricardo or mooman)

Thanks for your kind words, Richard ...

Do you have any photos with me in them?
(I know it's unlikely as usually cameras explode if they are supposed to take a picture of me)

Pat wanted me to send her the cow picture - I noticed I have no email address - can you send me a PM with the address?

Newest of the "Roger"s is "Roger TCB"
newest of the "Jill"s is "Jill Heslop"

Are these the two? If not, which Nicks do they use?

Anyway, welcome to the Mudcat, Jill and Roger!

Jill & Roger, welcome indeed. Francophones are welcome to enter the 'Niort9' pronounciation competition, which is being judged by the lovely and absent Dr Fibs.

I am never coming to France again, after my grenuoille was summarily executed by the judges. Harumph.

Thank you both so much for hosting such a wonderful event. The highest praise in the Hull lexicon is that something was 'really nice'. It was really nice.

We are now back safe and sound and enjoying an appreciative feline reception. We had a week in the Netherlands after the Mudgathering, observing the 60th anniversary of the liberation with a group of Canadian veterans, and walked in our front door about an hour ago.

Thanks for the photos Andy. I really must learn not to put my hands in my pockets when I sing.

Thanks to Richard and Pat for organizing everything and to Jill and Roger for being gold medal hosts.

There were so many good memories from this weekend that I hate to single one out, but I will never forget having to leave early on Sunday night and being marched to our car by Wilfried, playing Muss i denn on the harmonica.

I hope to see some of you at the Getaway.

Edmund

Well it looks like I'm the last one to make it home. Arrived back in Lairg at about 15:30 today, tired happy, and with a van full of booze. We went down to Andorra by small roads and byways, and back up to visit friends near Alencon by the same means, a great trip but nowhere else did we get the lovely weather we had a La Garenne unfortunately. We even had snow in Andorra plus it was a national holiday [Ascencion Day] so the roads were very busy, and the duty free shops were choc a bloc.
I second everything that has been said about how wonderful the weekend was, loved the surroundings too, and would go back there in the blink of an eye. Thank you, thank you, thank you Jill and Roger in particular, and Richard and Pat too, it was lovely to meet you all.
Well met by moonlight, to twist a phrase.
