Apparently Roy Harper has a single (yep a single) released later this month called 'The Death of God' - catalogue: HUCD038, label: Science Friction, Release date asap.

Should be worth a listen as is all of Roy's past work. If you've never heard or read Roy's work before, its really well worth seeking out. Try this web-site.......

I went to see him a couple of years ago at the Stables in Milton Keynes - he was very good but a bit political - Iraq war and all - he had a very good young guitarist playing with him

He has sung with Pink Floyd (have a cigar - roger waters got jealous) and Led Zep named a song after him (page guilt after nicking his riffs)

He was arrested in the 70's for violent behavior, whilst protesting for peace

And Alan the insurance man from Barton Le Clay has seen him 4,932 times including on a shoppping trip to the Arndale in Luton

I like Roy Harper's work as well. I liked the cd-reissue of Valentine with the extra tracks.

Great writer... and what a set of lungs! My favorite RH albums are "Bullinamingvase" (brilliant in its entirety) and "Folkjokeopus" (featuring "She's the One", the song that helped me see the error of my youthful ways regarding a relationship). His singing on "Have a Cigar" is the best vocal performance on any Pink Floyd album.

Keep us informed about the new single -- the website doen't mention it yet.

Cheers,
Michael

I got the info about the single from a link on Roy's web-site re 'Stormcock'. You can get in at:

http://www.mistlethrush.co.uk/stormcock

Roy's always had strong views poitical/a-politcal and religious and on anything else that affects the current landlords of the planet.

His 'lord's prayer' is a mammoth poem, a bit complex but as Roy says, 'don't be afraid, its only a movie'....or words to that effect.

No what you mean about 'Folkjokeopus' michaelr....probably the first album i listened to in a mates bedroom.....that and 'Ghengis Smith'. I reckon so many of his recordings are so good it's hard to find a fave but 'Stormcock' must rate as one of thee greats.

Never seen him live but admire his work a lot. Met his Mum once, my sister-in-law's Aunty Kay. She had a B&B in Kendal.

Cheers

Favourite line? 'They havn't got a dinar and they're looking no cleaner than a chinese wrestlers jock-strap cooked in chip-fat on a greasy day:-) (No body needs any money in the summer)

Nice line dave....then there's.....

'Watford Gap, Watford Gap, plate'o'grease and a load'o'crap'...
or 'the fear of mankinds un-togetherness pounds in my heart, the deceit of my friends, the betrayals of which i am part'.
and how about this from the brilliant McGoohan's Blues (one of the best contempory songs ever written in mu 'umble opinion).....

'Meanwhile the TV commercials are sweeping the day
Brainwashing innocent kids into thinking their way
The wet politicians and clergymen have much to say
Defending desires of the sheep they are leading astray
And Ma's favourite popstar is forcing a grin, he's a smash
Obliging the soft-headed viewers to act just as flash
The Village TV hooks its victims on give-away cash
The addicts are numbers who serve to perpetuate trash'.

Good stuff....'bout time you had im on yer prog Mike Harding....then maybe he would'nt want to be eh?

Couldn't agree more Vin, difficult to choose between McGoohan's Blues or When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease as to which is his greatest song and in turn one of the best contemporary songs of all time. Last saw him in Derby about four years ago - as enegmatic and audience dividing as ever

Eeee - Old Cricketer as well. Nearly forgot about that one.

Is it me? Or is it thee? Or it could be the sting in the ale...

My favourite artist , seen him loads . Best concert I went to was his 60th birthday party at Royal Festival Hall and the double CD of that is one of his best.
Probably my fav song is " Another Day " (The kettles on) or his tribute song to his mother" Muriel"
Try " One of those days in England " full version on album
I could go on and on
Cheers

Alan

Saw him live a few years ago. Most impressed, his guitar playing is under rated. I am not a big fan of effects pedals but he didn't have use them intelligently.

Hello Royheads!
Had to join this. Been a big fan since mid 80's!
Seen him tons, met him, and his babe of an American wife Tracey. Met Nick too! I took my 15 year old son who's into 50 cent, Eminem etc and wears a baseball cap and tucks his trackies in his socks (well did do a year or so ago), you know a proper stereotype thug in many eyes and he was awestruck by Nick's singing and amazing guitar skills!
He has got some of his mates into him which freaks me out in the best way! Check out 'Double Life' a collection of live recordings from Nick that will blow your mind!!!
Must point out to Dave the gnome that Roy's mam died two weeks after he was born, so you must have seen his stepmum/aunt!
Hi to Alan Insurance and VIN!
Dying to get hold of the new single 'The Death of God'.....April 20th according to Roy's site.
Come on, more Roy chat and I'll tell you about a guy I met thru ebay in New York who is making a RH documentary!

A roy documentary - now that would be interesting.

Anyone remember when Roy became a film star with Carole White, think the film was called 'Made'.

Am I the only one who thought of the "Roy Harper and Earl Shirkey" sides on Brunswick about 1927-- turned out "Roy Harper" was a pseudonym for Roy Harvey from Charlie Poole's band! This sounds like a different guy. (understatement)

The one thing that is definite about Roy is that he is unique and there is no one really like him .. Totally uncompromising .. long may he continue to dumbfound us all .. spread the word .. a real anarchist .. still young in the real sense of the word .. and there are so many gems in his arsenal of songs/poems ..

It's July 20th! I'm crossing fingers that the single will be in the shops outside of London by today. Best thing, you only need about 29 sales these days to make an impact on the charts. Can't wait to see how radio 1 cope with the title. Guaranteed hit when they ban it.

saw him Cambridge folk club 1968. about the first week come out fighting Ghengis Khan came out.

the resident bloody bore was giving the audience the benefit of insights into how the wicked Yanks had ripped off our British heritage - launched into Scarboro fair - unaccompanied and out of tune naturally - a million agonising nuances.

harper came on. said nothing.....just played a stunning version of Girl of the north Country.

divisive....? only into them that need dividing, and them that don't.

Mmm, lot of Roy chat and then nothing for 2 weeks - bit like the appearance of the new single. Has anyone heard it? is it good?. I know its (allegedly) available through amazon etc. but I wanted (and tried) to walk into a record shop and buy it - over the counter like, rushing home with it in my sweaty palms to force it on the stacker on my Dansette, just like in the old days. No room for nostalgia in Exeter or Taunton it seems - modern towns. Ah well.
